Medical Missionary Work & the Three Angels' Message

1. Medical Missionary Work: The Biblical & Spirit of Prophecy Foundation for Its Purpose

Dear Father, we are grateful for the opportunity to spend time with you today.

And as we speak about this message, this last day message of the 3 angels and how it relates to medical ministry, We pray that you'll help us to lay a foundation that will be a blessing and be encouragement.

I have Pastor Wayne Cablano here to my left, and Pastor Wayne Cablano, myself, I'm Dr.

John Tercuato, and we've worked together for approximately 10 years doing medical ministry in various forms in the panhandle of northern Idaho, Hayden, Idaho, Spokane, Washington areas as well.

So what we're going to share with you today is going to be a series of 4 lectures, there'll be 2 more, 1 on Friday, 1 on Sabbath, that talk about medical missionary work from various aspects that we've identified.

The purpose is really to encourage you and to encourage you by giving you a really sound foundation to understand really what it is you're trying to, from our perspective, what we should try to do as medical ministers.

Really what we want to do today is we want to just kind of give you some of the foundational principles and show how the 3 angels' message is related to medical ministry.

We've heard this, I don't know about you.

I'm a physician, I've been a physician for, you know, 18 years.

And sometimes I have a hard time grasping the concept of how these 2 fit.

And we'd like to set that foundation up for you today so that you understand.

Because if you have that, it becomes a very powerful foundation for you to know where to go next.

Right from the very beginning, we want to tell you that we're going to be using a lot of Bible and a lot of spirit of prophecy, because that's the strength that we're going to work from.

Those 2 sources provide us the foundation we want.

And overall, I think that by having that in your own hands for your own study, you'll be able to move in the direction you need to independently because you'll have God's Word guiding you.

So we want to begin with by defining what medical ministry is all about.

Medical ministry is very broad and you don't have to be a doctor, you don't have to be a nurse, You don't have to be a nurse, you don't have to be a health professional of any kind.

But to show you how broad the medical missionary work, we want to give you a scripture to begin with.

Matthew 25, 34 and 36, Then the king will say to those on his right hand, come, you blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

I was a stranger and you took me in and naked and you clothed me.

We didn't practice this ahead of time, sorry.

But before, so you see the, you get the idea that medical missionary work is a very broad work.

We're gonna get back to the scripture a little bit later on this morning.

But this is 1 of the most powerful medical missionary passages in the Bible.

And it deals with a broad spectrum of work of just showing love to people.

Loving them in their need where they are at at the present time.

You know, last night's presentation by Natasha was just right on target.

That is what medical missionary work is all about.

So with this I want to give you a very, I think, maybe a bold statement.

Some people may think it's crazy, but we want to defend this statement here this morning.

The medical missionary work must be combined with the gospel work before the latter rain will fall.

The latter rain, the Holy Spirit, will not come until the gospel work and the medical missionary work are combined in the way that Jesus combined them.

We can pray, we can do all kinds of you know night vigils and all kinds of wonderful things, but until this 1 essential ingredient is combined with the gospel, we will be here on this earth a long, long time.

Medical missionary work encompasses a spirit.

It's a spirit of loving and sacrificial sacrifice.

It is a theme that recurs throughout the time that we're going to be talking to you.

You're going to see this theme constantly interwoven into the whole concept of medical missionary work.

It is this demonstration of the character of God that we are to actually produce.

This loving sacrificial service is actually demonstrating the self-sacrificing, loving character of God.

And it's demonstrated in a variety of ways.

Often it's in the realm of health because that's where the need is often found, but the idea is we go wherever the need is.

Any way that we relieve suffering, give encouragement, inspire hope, that is considered medical missionary work.

Until this type of character is reproduced in God's people, the character of Christ, until Christ's character is reproduced in our lives doing this kind of thing.

So we want to start off with just sharing with you a couple of spirit of prophecy quotations.

And then we're going to dive into a study of the 3 angels, actually the 4 angels' messages of Revelation 14 and 17.

But to begin with, Christ's object lessons.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.

When the fruit is brought forth, immediately he put it in the sickle because the harvest is come.

Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church.

When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own.

Going on in the next paragraph, but to hasten the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, coming out of 2 Peter 3, we're all who profess the name bearing the fruit of his glory, how quickly the world would be sown with the seed of the gospel, quickly the last great harvest would be ripened and Christ would come.

And so we need to have that type of character development in us.

Again in Revealing Herald, July 21, 1896, notice that that bold statement at the bottom, it says, until this benevolence, this love, is brought into active experience, God's...

God's blessing cannot come upon his people in its fullness and what?

Until this benevolence, until this love, until this character that was demonstrated by Jesus is brought into active experience, exercise, God's blessing cannot come upon His people.

I'm just gonna read the boldest statement.

All of this is, if you do the A, medicalministry.gmail.com, all of this will be on there and you can download it and have it in context.

But the great outpouring of the Spirit of God, this is in the same context of that previous slide, the great outpouring of the Spirit of God, that's the latter rain, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people that know by experience what it means to be labors together with God.

When we have entire wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure.

Going on to the next slide that we'll have, I'm going to go ahead and just read through these.

A statement that's made in the Home Missionary, November 1, 1890, it states, it is through the church that the self-sacrificing love of Jesus is to be made manifest to the world.

But by the present example of the church, the character of Christ is misrepresented.

And the false concept of Him is given to the world.

See, this is why the Lord cannot impart to His church the fullness of His blessing.

To honor the church in a distinguished manner before the world would be to put His seal upon their works, confirming this false representation of His character.

When the church shall come out of the world and be separate from its maxims, habits, and practices, the Lord Jesus will work with His people.

Welcome to this presentation on medical missionary work and lessons from sacred history.

So let's go ahead and our head okay Father in heaven again we turn our thoughts to you and We seek for your spirit to guide and direct us.

And so we just ask that you will work here this morning.

We lay our lives before you and we just commit ourselves to you.

And we ask that you help us to understand lessons from history so we do not repeat the mistakes of history.

Okay, so This topic, Lessons from Sacred History, has 1 major point, a theme that floats through the whole presentation.

The theme is self-sacrificing love and service.

The whole purpose of this lesson is to point out some of the failures that we as a people going back in time into sacred history have made.

And it can be a hard thing to look at, but it's with a purpose.

Because by recognizing these negative things that can happen, we can choose another way.

And that's our goal, is to choose another way.

The Scripture says, rebuke a wise man and he will thank you for it.

And so today we want to look at some of these very difficult and hard to hear things about our history because it's not pleasant for us to take according to ourselves, say, I wasn't part of that, that was history.

And that's the whole concept is to be able to choose that way around those mistakes of the people of God in the past.

The Bible is faithful to chronicle those errors that we have made and we can actually use that material the way they were intended to be used to be a blessing and an uplifting point for ourselves to avoid those mistakes.

So I'd like to start by saying this second and the first part of the 3 angels' message are extremely strong warnings for the world and for God's people at the end of time.

Warnings against following the world's methods, principles, and practices.

And essentially, it's a warning against false opinions, opinions that are not of God.

So Revelation 14, 8 through 10 is the 1 that talks about Babylon being fallen, that great city who made all nations drink the wrath of her fornication, wine of the wrath of her fornication, and this really strong third angel's warning against false worship.

False worship in terms of bowing down maybe, but also possibly false worship of following my own direction and worshiping my own thoughts and processes.

Those who don't learn the lessons from history, we would be repeating them and we'd be doomed to repeat the same issues again if we didn't know what errors they had made.

And so we as a people, if we can avoid using worldly means to accomplish sacred ends, we will avoid suffering, both of ourselves, and be more effective for God.

So we're gonna take a look at 3 lessons, historic lessons, with modern day parallels and lessons for us.

But first, let me just read Testimonies to Ministers, page 31.

If we will put our trust in the Lord, for we are handling the mighty truths of the Word of God.

If we walk in the light as it shines upon us from the living oracles of God, we shall have large responsibilities corresponding with the great light given us of God.

We have many duties to perform because we have been made the depositories of what?

Of sacred truth to be given to the world in all its beauty and glory.

We are debtors to God to use every advantage He has entrusted to us to beautify the truth by holiness of character and to send the messages of warning and Of comfort of hope and love to those who are in the darkness and air of sin We want to focus on the reality of these statements.

We have been made depositories of the sacred truths to be given to this world in all its beauty and glory.

That is what has been given to you and to me.

How are we going to handle these truths that God has given us.

So the first lesson that we're going to learn from is the lesson of the fall of Israel.

Have you ever wondered, as I did when I was new in the faith way back in high school.

Here you have the nation of Israel with God as the head, a theocracy given to God as a people with a special message And a special message to be able to share with the world.

This group of people given a special place amongst the world so that they could share what God would have them to share.

But in a single generation, they went from the greatest and most influential nation on earth directly under God to a broken and divided nation without a place to stand in a single generation.

And it's the lesson that came from that fall that we want to focus on today because it really is...it gives us great direction.

If you turn to patriarchs and prophets, you'll find 3 key principles that were involved in the fall of the nation of Israel that we want to focus in on.

Number 1, they lost the spirit of self-sacrifice.

Number 2, they took to themselves the glory that was due to God alone.

And number 3, they lost their missionary zeal and turned great opportunities for witness into opportunities for commerce, to gain a buck.

This is what caused the fall of that great nation with its missionary purpose.

Israel was the greatest and most wealthy nation at the time, during the time of Solomon's reign, but he fell in that 1 generation, and these key elements were the thing that caused it.

So the first principle, let's go with them 1 by 1 and see how these developed.

The principle number 1, they lost the spirit of self-sacrifice.

Well, how could that happen with all that they had been given?

You would think with great blessings would come great responsibility and great response to the Lord.

Well, I'll share with you the beginning of it.

You see, with the laying of the foundation of the temple was the very beginning of that error which caused the downfall of the nation.

As the foundation was laid, the error was made that caused the downfall of the nation of Israel.

You see, Solomon, in order to build this great temple called Hiram the king of Tyre he asked him to help him build the temple of God of Israel and Hiram sent a man by the name of Hurom who is a mixed heritage, a mixed religious background.

In 2 Chronicles 2, verses 13 and 14, it says, and now I have sent a skillful man endowed with understanding, Hurom, my master craftsman, the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan, and his father was a man of Tyre." So he was of what?

Skilled to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone and wood, purple and blue, fine linen and crimson, and to make any engraving and to accomplish any plan which may be given him with your skillful men and with the skillful men of my Lord David your father." So what you have is you have the people of God with a spiritual motive and the people of the world with a worldly motive mixed in 1 person.

That's the mix that we have, mixing worldly and spiritual in 1 person.

In Prophets and Kings, page 63, Hurom was a descendant on his mother's side of Aholiab, to whom hundreds of years before, God had given special wisdom for the construction of the, that was the wilderness tabernacle.

And Petrarch and prophets commenting on that on page 63, it says, the descendants of these workmen inherited to a large degree the talents conferred on their forefathers.

For a time, these men of Judah and Dan remained humble and unselfish, but gradually, almost imperceptibly, they lost their hold upon God and their desire to serve him unselfishly.

They asked, notice this, they asked higher wages for their services because of their superior skill as workmen in the fine arts.

In some instances, their request was granted, but more often, they found employment in the surrounding, outside of Israel, Outside of the church.

In place of the noble spirit of self-sacrifice that had filled the hearts of their illustrious ancestors, they indulged in a spirit of covetousness, of grasping for more and more, that their selfish desires might be gratified.

They used their God-given skill in the service of heathen kings and lent their talents to the perfecting of works which were a dishonor to their maker.

These men whom God had given special talents with the intent to bless his own people instead employed their talents for the building and the beautification of temples of foreign gods, using that which was meant for the sacred, instead putting it to worldly gain.

And rather than serving the Lord with it, serving heathen kings.

In Prophets and Kings, page 63, it says, Thus at the head of Solomon's company of workmen, there was placed a man whose efforts were not prompted by the unselfish desire to render service to God.

The very fibers of his being were in wrought with the principles of selfishness." See, the differences between those motivated by the spirit of selfless sacrifice for the worship of God became evident in a very practical way in the differences of wages demanded for their work.

The idea is unusual skill demands higher wage.

This 1 issue set into effect a whole chain of events that led to the further degradation of God's people and the eventual fall of the nation of Israel.

Patriarchs and prophets, or prophets and kings probably, page 64 says, because of this unusual, of his unusual skill, Hurom demanded large wages.

Gradually, the wrong principles that he cherished came to be accepted by his associates.

As they labored with him day after day, they yielded to the inclination to compare his wages with their own, and they began to lose sight of the holy character of their work.

The spirit of self-denial left them, and in its place came the spirit of covetousness.

The result was a demand for higher wages, which was granted.

So you have the effect of 1 man who came to the nation to build a temple to God, and he began to infiltrate his principles into the minds of those that were directly associated with him.

3. Medical Missionary Work: Principles & Concepts

Loving Father, we just thank you for this time this afternoon to study and to share think together we pray that you will send your Holy Spirit to us as we consider principles and concepts of your work.

And we pray that you will guide us in our work for you that we may follow your ways and not our own.

Okay, so to this presentation called Principles and Concepts, We wanted to present this particular presentation because there are so many aspects that affect medical ministry that if you can think of them in advance And if you can consider them prior to them occurring, you can either avoid mistakes or you can take advantage of good opportunities.

There is a risk we take when we present this to you.

And the risk is that it could be quite disjointed.

Because there are a variety of things that we've gathered, trying to put into some coherent whole these ideas that we can give to you.

Do you think in all those years that I had the medical ministry in mind, do you think I might have run into some mistakes that I made?

Or possibly found some real solutions that could have been a blessing, had I known them in advance?

Pastor Wayne not only has been a pastor for years and years and years, but he's also been in charge of working at a lifestyle center for many years.

Do you think that he might have had in that process the opportunity to come across some things that if he had somebody telling him about beforehand, he might have actually, you know, made some good on it, made some extra moves in the right direction?

So you have to kind of look at these principles and concepts that way.

Each 1 of these things we're going to share with you actually does have a backstage, a back story.

These are not just pulled out of the air.

They're actual things that we had in relationships or circumstances or situations that we've been in.

And there's others that you could probably fill out many, many others.

So just to let you know, this is not complete.

We're going to have 4 major divisions in what we're going to share with you.

Principles and concepts related to relationships, methods of ministry, the concept of sacrifice has its own component that we're gonna share with you.

And the idea of the combined work also will have its own component.

So I just wanna make the statement that medical missionary work and the third angel's message are connected through these principles and concepts.

It says here that here is the patience of the saints.

Here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

And so our assignment really is to show how there is a connection between the medical missionary work and the third angel's message.

That's what we're trying to pull together.

And therefore, as I mentioned, it's not gonna be a full exposition on the gospel side now.

It won't be a full exposition on the gospel side now.

It won't be a full exposition on the gospel side of this third angel's message, but it will be on the medical missionary side of the third angel's message.

So the first principle we want to talk about is medical missionary work needs to be driven by relationship.

That relationship, first of all, is a relationship that is dependent upon God.

It's not what you do, but it's who you are.

It's not what you do, But it's who you are in your heart and in your life your words your actions what is The core value in your life revelation 3 Verses 14 actually verses 15 and 16 is what we're looking at but the Latest Ian message is verses 14 to 22 Jesus says to us as Seventh day evidence.

I know your works That you neither cold nor hot.

So then because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, he will do what?

So It's not what we do, it's who we are in our core being.

In John 5, 30, Jesus himself says, "'I can of myself do nothing.

"'As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous "'because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.

He was totally dependent upon his Father, and we are as well.

So the next principle we'll cover is this, in this relationship portion, is the principle that medical ministry, ministry of any kind, but particularly this gospel medical ministry that represents the character of Jesus, needs to be driven by prayer.

There is, in my opinion now, that I can see, there is no other kind of ministry that I've ever been involved in that tests me so much.

It tests my pride and arrogance, my self-will, the whether or not I am going to listen for where God would send me.

All of these are tested in this medical ministry portion.

And if I don't focus in prayer, then I will not be changed and I will become inadequate to the task, because I have to be imbued by the Spirit of God, and prayer changes me.
