Dangers of Meditation- Part 1

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to welcome you to this talk.

I'm going to talk about Eastern meditation, but it's about Eastern meditation in unbiblical Christian meditation.

It has also come into mindfulness therapy, MBCT, MBSR, for depression and for stress.

It is in self-help in a big way, self-help wellness and transformation.

But as I speak, what I want you to focus on is the gold standard of biblical meditation, and then to measure the Eastern meditative techniques and the outcomes against this gold standard.

That'll give us an anchor, a point of reference.

Now, we look at Psalms 19, King David's meditation.

In verse 14, he said, May the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord.

So the first 13 verses are his meditation.

The heavens, he said, declare universally God, his handiwork, his speech, his knowledge.

And he said, the heat of the sun was like knowledge that no 1 can escape from.

And before long, he saw the sun as the bridegroom, as a strong man to run a race from which nothing can be hidden.

Then he began to meditate upon the law, the statutes, commandments, judgments, and he said these were better than fine gold, better than honey, and that they brought warning and reward.

And then very quickly, he came to this verse, where he became completely transparent to God.

In trust, he knew of God's love because he saw Jesus as the bridegroom, and himself as the bride.

And he wanted to be pure for the bridegroom.

So he said, clean me from my secret faults.

Now secret faults are faults that you don't even know about yourself.

And he trusted God so much that he asked God to reveal to himself what he did not know about himself, that he may be pure.

And then he said, keep me from presumptuous sins.

We may assume a lot of things about ourselves, things that are glorious and right, we'll do this for God and that for God.

But he wanted to know if anything that he had assumed about himself was wrong, was presumptuous.

So he trusted the Lord, opened his heart, became completely transparent.

And in the strength of God's love, he wanted to be searched and to be made pure.

And the outcome of that meditation is cleansing.

Now I want to show you then, The Eastern meditators, what are their outcomes?

Now, we've talked about the 1 on the right, where it's biblical, it's personal, it's love-based.

It's active, It's interactive, it's reflective, it's passionate, it's consummate, and purgative.

Now on the left, you would see that there is Eastern and Western derivatives of Eastern meditation.

When I started life as a Zen meditator, when I was 20 years old, I ignored the meditation techniques and the people who were meditating in my country, Malaysia and Singapore.

The community saw them as hermits and recluses.

And in London, ah, the Beatles were doing meditation.

And there I could get English books on meditation.

So London caused me to do Eastern meditation.

The attempt to empty the mind, to reach silence, to empty your mind to a point of nothingness is achieved.

And in following the mantra, you keep out all incoming thoughts, not just for minutes, for hours.

Now, there were other methods, following your breath.

And I use, as a Zen meditator, follow my breath.

I count in cycles of 10, slowly, relaxedly, and then start 1 again.

There was another method as a Zen meditator.

It was a riddle, or the Japanese called it koan.

It is to dwell upon the thought of what is the sound of 1 hand clapping.

So on the on the Eastern side, it's about emptying the mind.

On the Biblical side is about connecting with God interactively to know the glory of his love and that love would work upon the man and he would entrust of God, seek to be like God, to be raised from glory to glory.

So there's a word that I'm introducing in this slide, it's called non-dual.

I'll describe it later And that's part of Eastern meditation.

So in comparison, biblical meditation is consummate, it's passionate, it's about love, it's about God.

Now in a book called Buddha Pill, These were written by 2 psychologists, highly educated, highly achieved people.

And they said that you can meditate on a mantra.

Things happen in the brain, in the mind, and that's what's important.

In fact, 1 guru said you can repeat the word Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola, and the same effect takes place in the brain, and then in the mind.

Now, this is a picture of my late Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

This was after the financial crisis, 2008, after his wife had passed away, and things were tumultuous, and he was stressed, and he wanted to find peace.

And he was brought to this benedictine monk who taught him Christian meditation, but Catholic meditation, really.

And this monk gave him 2 mantras, a choice of 2 mantras.

Lee, you can choose a Chinese mantra, which sounds like this, ometofo, or you can choose the Christian mantra, maranatha.

Lee chose, in the newspapers, He said, I chose Maranatha because it's more easier on my English tongue.

So now, it doesn't matter what you say with your mouth.

Now, right now, you folks are listening to me.

You are comparing what I'm saying to what you know.

When you go into meditation, your brain waves will slow down.

Dangers of Meditation- Part 2

The question I want to answer is what is spiritualism?

Satan has long been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world.

The foundation of his work was laid by the assurance given to Eve and Aden, you shall not surely die.

In the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be open, you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Little by little, he has prepared the way for his masterpiece of deception in the development of spiritualism.

He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs, but it will be reached in the last remnant of time.

Now, what's the foundation of spiritualism?

He implied that even if Eve came away from God and sin, she would be still immortal and divine.

And this had set the foundation, the false foundation, for virtually all religion, the immortal soul.

Now, Carl Jung, in his field of work, he understands the human psyche, generally.

He sees man as inventing or creating myths and demons and gods to represent what he feels and what he thinks, his psyche.

And he talked about, Cao Zong talked about Abraxas.

That which is spoken by God, the son is life.

That which is spoken by the devil is death.

But Abraxas speaketh that hallowed and accursed word, which is life and death at the same time.

Abraxas begeth truth and lying, good and evil, light and darkness, in the same word and in the same act.

Wherefore, Abraxas is terrible." Now, Abraxas represents, is a representation of man's God in relation to all non-dual thinking.

Because Abraxas is life and death at the same time, lying and truth at the same time.

And this non-duality, that we have an immortal soul, and that we ought to meditate or contemplate.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of authors promoting this, and a whole lot of them, hundreds of them are Christians, Protestants and Catholics.

And you can go into a website called Lighthouse Trails, and you can look for this and there will be lists of hundreds.

Time Magazine looks at this as the mindful revolution.

Goldman Sachs, because 1 of the directors, William George, is a meditator.

He introduced it into Goldman Sachs, the top bank.

And the queue to Do meditation in Goldman Sachs cannot be met.

At Davos G20, the most recent 1, the top 20 nations in the world, they are leaders.

They were taught meditation by Goldie Hawn and Ricard Mathieu, a French monk.

In The Great Controversy, Alan White writes, through the 2 great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions, while the former lays the foundation of spiritualism and the former being the immortality of the soul.

The latter, Sunday, creates a bond of sympathy with Rome.

The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the Gulf to grasp the hand of Spiritualism.

They will reach across the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power.

Now, she makes a distinction, I think, to grasp spiritualism.

So we can look for this events happening and it's happening.

We see a movement, a unity movement now between Catholics and Protestants.

Now we must never think of it as twofold, because it's a threefold union and spiritualism is the chief and third component.

Now, the second angel's message, and we should know it well.

And there followed another angel saying Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, Because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

She said, the wine of Babylon is the exalting of the false and spurious Sabbath above the Sabbath, which the Lord Jehovah have blessed and sanctified for the use of man, and the pagan teaching of the immortality of the soul.

And she adds, these and kindred heresies, now what are these?

These are number 1, the spurious Sabbath, and 2, the immortality of the soul.

These, she said, and kindred heresies, a whole lot of them.

And the rejection of the truth convert the church into Babylon.

Now, we may think of the wine of Babylon, and we often think of the wine of Babylon as this confusion, this heresies, this kindred heresies.

The foundation is the mortality of the soul.

It was the foundation that created the confusion, the thought that, hey Eve, come over, sin and you're still divine and immortal, that we are a non-dual being of fallen human and divinity.

That causes confusion and has led to the development of kindred heresies.

So the foundation, as you can see in these words, is the immortality of the soul.

Sunday is a bond of sympathy, a handshake, a clasping of hands.

And as I read, Think about what he's saying and contrast it with what Satan said in Eden, and see if you can see the similarities.

He says, At the centre of our being is a point of nothingness, which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point of spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes of our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind or the brutalities of our own will.

Because when you die, that is all that is left.

When we die, everything is destroyed except this 1 thing, which is our reality that God preserves forever.

He will not permit its final destruction.

This is built into that particular little grain of gold, the spark of the soul, or whatever it is.

And the freedom that matters is the capacity to be in contact with that center, for it is from that center that everything else comes.

Contemplative prayer is nothing other than coming into consciousness of what is already there.

Now, Thomas Merton is the founder of Catholic Contemplative Prayer.

Now, question, as we contrast it with what Satan said in Eden.

Did Father Thomas Merton say, you shall not surely die.

He said contemplative prayer is nothing other than coming into consciousness.
