The Forgotten Victory at Calvary

Holy Father, our Father in God in heaven, Father it is you that commended your love towards us that while yet we were sinners you sent Jesus to die for us.

As a father we thank You for sending Jesus to take the penalty of our sins so that we can be saved.

And Father, in a special way, I ask that I be a blessing not a curse to Your people, that Your spirit be upon this room and upon our minds and hearts.

That our hearts be moved of the love and grace that You have for us.

To give us full assurance of forgiveness and also a new heart and a new life.

And so Father, We ask that You do something special here today, this Sabbath day.

We ask that even today that we get a greater, more beautiful picture of Calvary and the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf.

You know, as a teacher, 1 of the main issues, and I'm sure it's a lot more in elementary school teachers, by the way, I can never be an elementary school teacher.

I salute elementary school teachers, amen.

Some people say, how can you teach high school students?

Elementary school teachers are the ones that are true heroes.

And 1 of the main issues that we deal with as educators is the issue of self-control among our students.

In fact, it is that time of year where seniors are frantically turning in their late work to see if they could graduate or not.

You know, I was told by a colleague this past week that there's some students that actually desire to turn in their homework on time.

They're intent to turn in their work on time, but when they go home, they open up the laptop and turn on YouTube and all of a sudden their self-control comes out the window and 4 hours later they're tired and they're not going to go to sleep.

Or as we as Adventists call it, temperance.

You see, we live in an age where society has less and less self-control, less and less temperance.

We have opiate addictions, we have sex addictions, We have media addictions.

In fact, in September 14, 2012, the New York City Board of Health voted to ban soft drink containers that are 16 ounces or larger.

Because New York City has so much of a problem with obesity and diabetes.

That's pretty bad when the government steps in.

In fact, the Apostle Paul predicts of an issue with self-control.

Notice what the Bible says in 1st Timothy chapter 3 verse 1.

The Bible says, this know also that in what days?

Notice what the Bible says in verse 3 and 4.

The Bible says without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent.

Fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.

We live in a society and we live in the last days and we live in an age where there is a lack of self-control.

But notice, we are sent with the evidence, amen.

And evidence anticipate by our very name the second coming of Jesus.

Notice the characteristic of those that are anticipating Jesus' return, those are the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9, verse 25, the Bible says...

So those that are looking for Jesus' return are tempered in all things.

Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.

In fact, Paul uses an illustration of athletes that when you prepare and train, and We know, and I'm in the Filipino church of Manny Pacquiao, amen?

When Pacquiao prepares for a fight, his diet changes, isn't that correct?

His schedule changes, isn't that correct?

He trains, he dedicates his time to get his body right.

So too as people prepare for Jesus to come.

And God is willing to get us in shape to win that race.

We are January, February, March, we're on our fourth month of this year, is that correct?

I'm sure many of you made New Year's resolutions of losing weight, going to exercise.

You know, it's funny, I go to the gym regularly, and in January, the gyms are packed.

We live in society where we make promises, but our natural state, we have no willpower.

So what happens when we realize that it's so difficult to make the right choice, we seek to have instant gratification rather than the long-term consequences of the actions we make, but there's hope.

Do you make the instant choice that feels good rather than the best choice of life and life more abundantly.

There's hope for you and I even though we make the bad choice because there's someone that came to this earth to demonstrate self-control.

Notice the Bible says in Hebrews chapter 2.

The Bible says, for verily he took not on him the nature of angels.

Jesus came down not with the nature of angels, not the nature of Adam before the fall.

But notice, but he took on the seed of Abraham.

You know what Abraham's DNA, you know what Abraham was?

He committed a grievous scandal within his father's household.

He committed adultery with his father's concubine.

You have David and Solomon and all these people of gravest sins and all that DNA was inherited in the body of Jesus.

The Bible says, wherefore and all things that behoove them to be made like unto us brethren.
