Food in the Online Space

I am the producer, host, and founder of Simply Bakings.

Simply Bakings is an online cooking channel that I started on YouTube.

I share 5 ingredients or less recipes, my main focus is baking recipes, and I also do vegan baking.

Here's 1 of my videos that I, 1 of my recent popular videos that I did.

I was in college then, and I was working at the Adventist Book Center.

And it was a slow afternoon, and my coworker and I were labeling books, and we just got started on talking about random things and all of a sudden he told me, hey I have a YouTube channel.

I was like, what, you have a YouTube channel?

And he told me that it's all about betta fishes.

So basically what he did was he put his camera in front of his aquarium and for like 10 minutes, you could just see the fishes swimming around.

And I asked him, I was like, people actually watch that?

He's like, yeah, and then he showed me a different channel.

This channel had, at that time, back in 2012, hundreds of subscribers, like 200 or 300, but millions and millions of views on this channel.

And we somehow started talking about how I should start a YouTube channel.

I don't wanna start a YouTube channel because, first of all, I know how many haters there are on YouTube.

And we see these forums online, and you see what people, even on Facebook, you see people who hate it, who love it and they'll just talk smack about it.

I can't handle criticism, even though it's in front of the online and he's like, just do it.

And I was like, no, and plus, I don't even know what I'm gonna share.

And then he reminded me, like, hey, you know, I know you love to bake.

You always bring ingredients to, or you always bring your desserts to the floor and share it with all of our coworkers.

And I was like, yeah, but still, I don't want to show my face on YouTube.

I just, I don't want to put myself out there.

I'm actually really shy, and I don't like talking in front of people.

And So I don't know how I got started, but he convinced me.

And actually, it took like several months for me to get started.

I actually didn't have a computer, I didn't have a camera.

So at that time, my brother was actually getting started in videography.

And we used his gear, and we actually hand-held everything.

And my little sister, my brother, and I were just like arguing like how to film this.

So, till this, well about 2 years ago, it was a pandesal video, and those of you who don't know what pandesal is, it's a sweet Filipino bread.

And for 2 years, that was my money maker for YouTube, until 1 of my other videos started to make more money.

And I told myself, I was like, this is really fun.

Like, seeing my videos up there on YouTube and like my creativity, like I never thought I could do this.

Actually, for the first 10 videos of YouTube, I didn't edit it.

My brother helped me, because I had no idea what I was doing.

I think about 4 or 5 months into it, my boyfriend, now my husband, he actually bought me my first gear and invested in me, eventually I paid him back, so he kind of believed in me.

And that's how I got started with YouTube.

And I told myself, I'm gonna give myself a year and let's see where this takes me.

And it took me to so many places I never thought I would go or I would do.

So I first started off with just a YouTube channel for the first couple of years.

Eventually I geared off, or I ventured off to social media.

I had a Facebook account, Instagram, all of those social media, and then I eventually started my website.

Now these pictures are some of the things I make.

I take pictures and do all of these fonts and believe me, if you look at the beginning of my pictures and videos, you'll see how far I've gone to where I am today, which was a lot of work, guys.

So, before I tell you my story, I wanna just give you a really, really short, brief background of YouTube.

They were all PayPal employees, and they started this in their garage, Chad, Steve, and Jawed.

In fact, it was purchased by Google for millions of dollars, a lot of money from these 3 guys.

And then by, I think, a year after that, YouTube now is number 2 in the most popular website and the most searched, most searched engine followed by Google being number 1.

You've heard people say, hey, do you know how to make bread?

And then someone would say, yeah, just go YouTube it.

And that's how it's become a catchphrase, just go YouTube it.

So YouTube is pretty, going pretty strong.

At first when I started back in 2012, I was like, will YouTube be here 5 years from now, from 10 years from now, and it is still here.

In fact, people are making a living off of YouTube, and I'm 1 of them.

So now the next thing I'm gonna tell you is how to earn money on YouTube.

Most people wonder, like, is it really possible?

I remember my parents, like, they were kind of skeptical.

You can really make a living off of YouTube?

And in my head I'm like, I'm gonna prove to you that I can.

And it was a long process, and in fact, When I started, I didn't actually realize that it was possible, but then, because you know when you watch YouTube, you don't believe everything people say, and I'm kind of skeptical at heart, so when people say, yeah, I make a living, I'm like, okay, and it is possible.

So anyway, back to how to earn money on YouTube.

So I'm sure with a raise of hand, how many of you have seen ads on YouTube?

It's either on the side or right before the video with a skip ad, and then there's 1 that shows up on the bottom of the screen.

That's how I make, 1 of the ways I make money.

For me as a food, and most of us here who are foodie, The best time for me to make money is quarter 4, which is from October to December.

That's quarter 4 for us, and that's when all of our CPMs, which is kind of like the equivalent of minimum wage, so sometimes my CPM can be as low as $5, and sometimes it can be as high as $50, meaning I get paid every thousand views.

So every thousand views, let's say it's during the holidays, it would be $50 per thousand views for all of my videos per month.

Now, that sounds like a lot, but then YouTube gets a cut of that.

So technically, I'm not making $50, I'm making $25.

And if you're a part of a network, they take a cut of that too.

So it's like, you think you're making a lot of money, but it really isn't.
