What I've been asked to do, I've been asked to come and spend a few minutes sharing some of my testimony with a few verses in the Bible that became very important to me in my career.

I'm a physician in Tennessee, I'm a radiologist, And as you know, that's a long process, or some of you may know.

I was talking to some medical students last night, and I invited them to come here and hear this testimony.

And I began with a verse, or I introduced a verse to them.

I'd like you to turn in your Bibles to 1 Corinthians.

Actually probably everybody knows this chapter, 1 Corinthians 13 is what?

And but you know as a physician, as I was training, there's a temptation, and as I told the group last night, I ended up like Daniel in the Bible.

I went to medical school in Babylon and actually met Nebuchadnezzar himself.

There was no literal fiery furnace there, but there was something very similar.

But as you go through medical school, there's a temptation to put trust in what you're doing, the knowledge that you have, and feel good about yourself because of that, right?

You know, you have the skill to help people get better, or you have this knowledge about the human body that's so great, And so there's a temptation to focus on yourself.

And these verses in chapter 13, actually the beginning verses, I think sometimes we don't focus as much on these verses as a part of this love chapter, but I'm just gonna read beginning in verse 1, Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels.

Would it be impressive to be able to speak in the tongues of angels?

You know, to speak in the tongues of physicians, you know, all that medical jargon.

Love, I have become a sounding brass or changing symbol.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, would that be pretty important?

Do we have the gift of prophecy in the Seventh-day Adventist Church?

Do I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge?

That's pretty comprehensive, All mysteries and all knowledge.

And though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains, but have not what?

That's a heavy statement there, wouldn't you agree?

All of a sudden we have a person standing here that can talk to angels, who has the gift of prophecy, understands all mysteries and has all knowledge.

But what has the Bible said about him if he has that out of the context of love?

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, would that be a good work?

You bestow all your goods to feed the poor.

What about if you have the ability to heal someone because of your knowledge of medicine?

But, And though I give my body to be burned and have not love, it profits me nothing.

Pretty important to understand what love is.

Everybody who agrees that it's pretty important in this life, in this Christian walk, to understand what love is, raise your hand.

Because if you don't have it, you have what?

So, in this journey of mine, as I was being trained to be a physician, and, you know, I started out in internal medicine, did a residency in internal medicine, saw the light at the view box, became a diagnostic radiologist.

As I told the group last night, that was because I could sleep at night.

Internal medicine, there's not much of that, especially in residency.

And so I got into radiology, and then as soon as I get into radiology, they develop all these modalities that the ER physicians want to use all night long.

And so I'm getting woken up more in radiology than I was in internal medicine.

So the radiologists are very resourceful.

We hired a large group of radiologists who live in Australia.

We called them Nighthawk, and we let them do all our night call.

But as I was in this journey of career and education and thinking about spiritual things, and God was impressing my heart, it became very clear to me that I needed to understand what love was.

So, actually in our lesson this quarter, studying in John, let's turn to 1 John.

She said I had to be done by 5 to 11, so we're going to have to put it in hyperdrive here.

First John chapter 4, it's another very common verse.

Beloved, verse 7, beloved let us love 1 another for love is of God and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

He who does not love does not know God for what?

So if we want to know what love is, then we need to know how God defines it.

You know, the world, you know, usually for truth, there's 1 answer, right?

But what about a true and false question?

How many possibilities are there for false?

It's usually 1 true answer, but there's an infinite number of false possibilities.

You know, the world has an infinite number of false definitions of love.

So we need to look, God is love, that is who he is, we need it or we have what?

So we need God, we need his love and we need his definition of it and we need it in our lives, right?

So right here it says in verse 9, in this the love of God was manifested toward us.

So God is not only gonna define love, He's going to show it, make a drama of it, okay?

That God has sent his only begotten son into the world that we might, what, live through him.

So the love of God was manifested toward us, it was defined, its definition is the giving of himself to someone else for the purpose of their what?

And that doesn't mean to live for another day from a respirator in the ICU, although that's a good thing.

In John chapter 6, God's very interested in demonstrating his love.

He wants everyone to come to him to be saved, to live with him for eternal life.

In verse 30, this is John chapter 6, verse 38, Jesus says of himself, for I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

And in verse 40, this is the will of him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
