Why Adventism Matters

Father in heaven, thank you for this privilege to worship you together, to have a Sabbath couched in between 2 largely, hugely significant events in church history.

And I just pray, God, that you would speak to us today, that we would better understand why we are Seventh-day Adventists this morning and why we are Protestants this evening.

Do for these people what I cannot do, I beg of you.

Okay, so I have a few disclaimers or in-house notes I need to make.

First of all, October 22nd, 1844 is a moment of tremendous significance to Seventh-day Adventists.

Our movement was birthed out of this particular event, and so what I'm going to be covering this morning is dealing with that, specifically what we refer to as the investigative judgment, and that it's actually good news.

What I feel could be done better, maybe, than we have done to date in some of our presentations is to infuse this teaching with the gospel, and that's my burden this morning.

But for those who may not be Seventh-day Adventists with us this morning, First of all, welcome.

And this is a bit of an in-house discussion, but we'll give you kind of a lens as to what we believe and why we're here as a movement.

This evening, again, we're going to cover the topic of the Protestant Reformation.

In a few days, October 31st, 500 years ago, Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door at Wittenberg and was kind of a hammer sound that rung throughout the earth, right?

That's something that, kind of like that, but a little Different.

I'll see if I can move forward a little bit.

Anyway, it was an event that shook the world and is still shaking the world, but there are some now in Christendom, even people whose movements were formerly Protestant in nature, who now feel that the word Protestantism, or someone protesting, is an offense to unity.

And so we're going to address that this evening.

Now, to kind of give some framework for our message, this is from life sketches.

This is from Ella White's kind of biography of her own life, just kind of giving a framework as to why we are where we are, though what we believe is strictly from Scripture.

In his word, God has revealed saving truths, and as a people we should be earnest students of prophecy.

We should not rest until we become intelligent in regard to the subject of the sanctuary, which is brought out in the visions of Daniel and John.

This subject sheds great light on our present position in work, and gives us unmistakable proof that God has led us in our past experience.

It explains the disappointment in 1844, showing us that the sanctuary to be cleansed was not the earth as we had supposed, but that Christ then entered into the most holy apartment of the heavenly sanctuary.

There was a common teaching in Christendom then that the earth was a sanctuary, so when you read of a sanctuary being cleansed in Daniel 8 14, the assumption would be the earth is going to be cleansed and it must be the second coming.

It was referring to the heavenly sanctuary.

"...and is there performing the closing work of his priestly office.

In fulfillment of the words of the angel to the prophet Daniel, under 2, 300 days, then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.

Now, I'm asking for you to do your bestest, young people, to bear with me this morning.

It's gonna be easy to understand, but I have to walk through some stuff.

But this is the chiefest significance and importance as to why you are a Seventh-day Adventist, and that the gospel is all over this message, I assure you.

So, we believe, according to Scripture in Daniel 8 and Daniel chapter 9, that under 2, 300 days, that timeline ends in 1844, particularly October 22, 1844.

It's a whole other Bible study that's not the point of this message.

But this is what we have believed in that when Daniel's given a vision in Daniel chapter 8, there's things he doesn't understand and he's wrestling with.

And he says specifically, I didn't understand the vision.

An angel sent to him in Daniel chapter 9 and says, son of man, I've come to help you understand and specifically understand the vision.

Well, there is no vision in Daniel 9, so it has to be the vision in Daniel 8, the 1 he didn't understand.

And the explanation he's given is actually an explanation of another time prophecy that deals with a very similar idea.

A time of probation is allotted for God's chosen people.

So the 70 weeks is a picture of what happens in the 2300 days, and that's kind of what we have until a new phase of ministry begins.

So the gospel goes to the Gentile world after the 70 weeks and the ministry in the heavenly sanctuary begins after the 2300 days, that process begins.

Now, the daily service that the Israelite sanctuary had had a lot of significance to it.

It's basically our understanding of the gospel.

This is whenever you confess your sins and repent of your sins.

When you went to the gate and confessed that sin before the priest, he caught the blood of the animal that you yourself had to kill and brought that blood into the sanctuary and sprinkled it on the veil.

So the presence of God is there and this is a means of bringing us to atonement, bringing brought back to 1 with God.

So the daily service was our sins being transferred into the sanctuary and they were covered.

You're no longer held accountable for that sin.

This is where Jesus's ministry as a lamb is represented.

Jesus is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

John the Baptist says in John 1 29 that, "...behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." Right?

Your sin is put in the sanctuary, but he also as priest administers this sacrifice on your behalf in the heavenly sanctuary.

The yearly service, the day of atonement, which is what we believe the investigative judgment is, what it's tied to, is when they cleanse all that record of sin that had showed up over the course of the year, that's now cleansed out of the sanctuary.

You were forgiven, it was covered, but there was still a record in the sanctuary, and that had to be removed from the camp.

So on the day of atonement, Leviticus chapter 16, once a year, the priest was able to go behind the veil by wafting up incense, and then began a process of cleansing every record of sin from the sanctuary so there's no more record to be seen or to be found.

This is the second phase of atonement, and again, where Jesus' priestly role is needed.

So we not only need a lamb, someone who dies for our sins, but we also need a priest, someone who provides us what we need and mediates on our behalf and administers the grace of Christ to us.

Now, The Day of Atonement and the investigative judgment.

Is this even in the Bible or is this just something from Ellen White?

I'm just gonna give references and brief things on them because I need to move on.

But in Exodus 25, 9 and 40, we're told, verses 9 and verse 40, we're told that the sanctuary on earth was actually a type, it was made from the pattern of the heavenly sanctuary above.

We're told in Leviticus 16 what the Day of Atonement looked like, what happens then, which is what we're living in, the fulfillment of the Day of Atonement.

Daniel 7 verse 10 talks about the books being opened and the court seated just before the Second Coming.

There's some form of a judgment just before the Second Coming.

Daniel 8 14 is kind of the crown verse for us or a foundational verse for us as Adventists that unto 2, 300 days, then the sanctuary will be cleansed, that work will begin.

Daniel 9 talks about the 70 weeks, which is when the 2, 300 days begins.

It's also found in Hebrews, Hebrews 8, 1-5.

It talks about Jesus being the minister of the true tabernacle in heaven, and that the earthly temple was a copy or a shadow of the heavenly sanctuary.

Hebrews 9, verse 11, and also verses 23-24, talks about Christ cleansing the heavenly sanctuary with his own blood, okay?

And Revelation 10 talks about the bitter disappointment we went through as a movement, and that same movement that goes through a bitter experience, right?

Just imagine if you knew that Jesus is coming in 10 days.

If Jesus were to show up in 10 days, all of your problems will be gone.

You don't have to worry about bills, debts, hardship, heartbreak, rejection.

This was the experience for the Advent movement.

They were so excited that Jesus was coming, but when Jesus didn't come because they misunderstood what the temple was, it was bitterly disappointing to them, right?

They had sold farms, they had sold everything, and they looked like fools to the people around them.

And there were basically 3 parties that came out of that disappointment.

Those who kept setting dates, Jehovah's Witnesses were actually 1 of them.

And thirdly, those who realized that there was so much about this that was so right and God's hand was in it, we had to have missed something.

And through further investigation, they realized that the temple that was being referred to was the sanctuary in heaven.

Those are the 3 camps that came out of that.

But that same movement, it doesn't just end with disappointment.

They're given a charge, they're given a command to prophesy again, and it says about in our versions most of them, but in the original language it could say to prophesy again to many nations, tribes, and tongues.
