Do You Love Me, A Question to Seventh-day Adventists

The title of our study this morning is called, Do You Love Me?

I'd like to invite you to open up your Bibles to the book of John.

An experience that happened with 1 of the disciples.

And I want you, when we're reading this, I don't want you to look at the individual himself, the disciple.

I want you to put yourself here, in John chapter 21.

In John chapter 21, beginning with verse 13, and the Bible says, Jesus then cometh and taketh bread and giveth them and fish likewise.

This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples.

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, or Gregory, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?

He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee.

Verse 16, he saith to him again the second time, Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me?

He saith unto him, yea Lord thou knowest that I love thee.

And then verse 17, I can put myself with Peter because for this to be asked of me the third time would definitely grieve my heart because this is the Savior speaking and he's asking this question to Peter and also to myself and as well as to you.

Says, he saith unto him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me?

Peter Gregory was grieved because he said unto him the third time, lovest thou me?

And he said unto him, Lord thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee.

Now the thought came to my mind, we know the story, but why did Jesus ask him 3 times this question?

We're going to look at that this morning.

Bible says, Then say of Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night.

For it is written, I will smite the shepherd and the sheep of the flock shall be what?

But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I not what?

Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night before the cock crow thou shalt deny me how many times?

Peter said unto him, though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee, likewise also said all the disciples.

So I find that quite interesting because here it is that Jesus tells the disciples the condition of their hearts.

He shares with them the reality of their minds and where they had confidence in themselves personally and the confidence as Jesus was constantly seeking to put before his disciples as he was ministering before them is to keep their minds on him.

He says, all ye shall be happy because of me this night.

It said, all ye shall be offended because of me this night.

And I asked myself this question, why would they be offended with Jesus?

Why would Jesus be the very thing that the disciples would be offended by?

I mean, here it is that Jesus has been amongst them, ministering, teaching them, leading them, guiding them, showing them the ways of the Father, and yet the Bible says, Jesus says, that they will all be offended.

And I thought about that and I said, well, Lord, What application does that, how does that apply to me?

And I thought about it and I said, well, Lord, the Bible says in Jeremiah 17, verse 9, it says the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked who can know it.

I can't say that I'm going to stand for Jesus if today I've given into some cherished sins.

And so I want to bring some more points to your mind.

What will all the disciples, Why will all the disciples be offended by Jesus that night?

Jesus says, for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee." And so the interesting thing that stuck out to me is that it says it is written.

And so when we know that it says it is written, it is referring to the word of God.

And so as we continue looking into this, the issue was with the word.

This word went against their expectation.

In other words, they did not put their entire trust in the word.

And so This in itself brought them to be offended.

And he shall be for a sanctuary, but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

So this is speaking of Jesus how the Bible says that he will be an offense, a Rock of offense.

Romans chapter 9 verse 32 and 33, it says, wherefore because thou sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law.

For they stumbled at that stumbling stone as it was written, Behold, I lay in Zion, what?

Offense, and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

First Peter chapter 2, verse 8, I mean, verse 6 through 8, says, wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, behold, I, Laodicean, a chief cornerstone, elect precious, and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you, therefore, which believeth, he is what?

Precious, but unto them which be disobedient.

The stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner.

It says, and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, even to them would stumble at the what?

And so those that stumble at the word, the Bible says that Jesus is unto them a stone of stumbling, a rock of offense.

And then it goes on to say, being disobedient whereunto also they were appointed.

So Brothers and sisters, the disciples were clearly offended by the Word of God.

And so as the Word is before them and the Word is speaking unto them, the Word is teaching them, gathering them together, revealing unto them the Father, appointing them the mission, the Bible says that they were offended by Jesus.

We have heard so much precious truths that is contained in the word of God, and We can leave here excited, but then once we go back to our respected places, will we allow the word to do the work in which the word says that it will do in us?

Will we be offended just as the disciples?

We are very interesting as creatures, as humanity, as humans.

Me, personally, I'm going to put myself in this predicament.

Yes, Lord, I believe what your word says.

Yes, Lord, I want to serve you with all my heart.

But then when a circumstance arises, when issues come about, when I'm confronted with the realities of my own heart, when I'm in a conflict or in a situation with another brother or sister, If something is being said to me that is not favorable to my heart, how will I respond?

And so Jesus wants us to remember, especially for Gregory Jones this morning, that the experience that we had here, we must not forget it.

Because the Lord is doing a work for us this day, brothers and sisters, and the experience is here.

Because even though there was a few people here, you were here for a reason.
