A True Witness

I don't know about you, but in our home, self-help books are helpful.

That's the biggest part of the problem at the time, right?

Hi, my name is David, and I have a problem.

Self-help outsells just about every other kind of book.

I could have gone to my office and gotten a lot more.

Becoming the woman, wife, and mother you've always longed to be.

Or this 1 here, it's pretty popular, it's been around a while.

Do you know what love languages you cherish more than the others?

Here's another 1 that Elizabeth and I have gone through recently.

I tell you, this helped me understand Elizabeth a whole lot better.

It also helped me understand that I don't understand.

But it helped me understand a whole lot better.

I'm pretty sure the first chapter is about his needs and the other 9 are about hers.

And I don't think I just fulfilled 1 of those needs by saying that.

In the midst of all those books, I have a question for you because Elizabeth and I, we've been married, what, 10 and a half years?

How many of you have been married 40 years?

Is there anybody else besides the amblers over here?

So I have a random question for you, and you have to weigh out the odds and you have to vote for 1.

Getting married, kind of important, or staying married?

Now how do you stay married if you don't ever get married in the first place?

That's what I thought, a bunch of hypocrites in the room.

That's what I get for asking for audience participation.

Kind of along the same lines, but a little different.

I mean, they're both pretty important, aren't they?

I'm going to again think these are a bunch of stupid questions?

But if you stop and think about it, no matter how great our conversion experience, we must renew that commitment daily, right?

It's very popular today to have a big old wedding.

It's not quite as popular to stand the test of time.

I wonder what the statistic is on how many come to Jesus but don't stay with Jesus.

Jesus said, if any man come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross biannually." Quarterly?

And it's easy to recognize in the work world, I mean, no matter how well you shine in the job interview, you're going to have to maintain some integrity, some good work ethic.

You're going to have to be plugged in, you're going to have to be on time.

And just being able to do that for a week, or 2 weeks, or 3 weeks, you have to continue, right?

Anybody guilty of over New Year's or some time you say, okay, I'm going to get into whatever and you just get out there and you overdo it and you're so sore you don't think you'll ever walk again and you just say, forget it.

That's important, but you also have to stick with that decision.

Not giving birth to a child, that's a pretty significant time in a married couple's lives.

But are you done raising the kid once the child's born?

Are you done when you have like a seven-year-old and a five-year-old and a almost three-year-old and a six-month-year-old?

And Don't get me wrong, the birth is important, but the continual commitment.

How many of you thought you'd never make it through registration day at school or at college and the lines?

If you're not registered, we don't have a place for you.

But just getting over that hurdle doesn't mean you're necessarily going to graduate either.

So I submit to you this morning the same way being a Christian involves a whole lot more than simply being converted.

Now don't get me wrong, conversion is important.

But this morning I want to look at Acts chapter 22 as we look at perhaps 1 of the most dramatic conversion experiences in all of Scripture.

And you know I'm talking about Paul's conversion experience.

We have this accounted 3 times in the book of Acts.

And on this particular occasion Paul has returned to Jerusalem.
