Vitamin R

If vitamin R could actually be put into a pill and you get the benefits of taking a pill, it would be the best-selling pill in the world.

You know, there's several B vitamins, and there's several R vitamins.

So vitamin R1 is our daily rest, meaning our sleep.

Vitamin R2 I talked about earlier today, that is the weekly rest.

I could go into that aspect of things, 7 day rhythms.

And this is 1 of the evidences, for instance, of the creator God, because there's nothing in nature that corresponds to 7 days.

And why do even flies have 7 day rhythms?

And other animals and plants have 7 day rhythms.

And so this 7 day rhythm, of course, is 1 of the strong evidences of a creator, God.

And as mentioned earlier today, we need that rest.

Anyone want to guess what vitamin R3 might be?

And of course, that's spelled re-creation, not W-R-E-C-K, creation.

And of course, what a lot of people do for recreation is actually the W-R-E-C-K version.

By the way, does anyone know what the number 1 form of recreation is today in the Western world?

YouTube, television, those sorts of things.

You know, it's not having the genuine experiences.

But there are genuine experiences in nature that provide that recreation or recreation.

And this is 1 that the world has tried to co-opt in the form of meditation and actually the way we should be meditating is utilizing our frontal lobe, not suppressing our frontal lobe.

And the world's form of meditation, the Eastern meditation aspects of things, actually by design are to shut down the frontal lobe but not the rest of the brain necessarily.

And that's why they have short-term gains and long-term problems.

It's kind of disappointing today that in the world of psychology we are seeing a rapid rise in Eastern meditation and a rapid rise in self-hypnotic techniques.

By the way, if you look at the studies on these things, yeah, they can show some short-term benefit, but it's very minor.

And the long-term benefits, in fact, what's happening in these studies, it's kind of unethical, the way they do these studies.

I don't know why they get published in peer-reviewed literature, other than they're politically correct.

But they look at the benefits and they don't look at the risks.

And there are significant risks of Eastern meditation.

And we are having those that are more scientifically sound catching up with this now and actually writing about it.

But the form of vitamin R4 that is the most beneficial, far more beneficial than meditation, is actually active prayer to God.

Meditation is really a substitute for prayer.

And prayer is something, if you use biofeedback, when you're in active prayer to God, that is when you'll get the lowest decibels in your audio biofeedback.

There are some very positive things happening to the brain when you are pouring out your soul to God.

And it is something that I think we ought to be aware of.

By the way, 2 of those forms of rest are actually mentioned in Scripture.

I think it is Mark 135 that says, Jesus rose a great while before day and went into a solitary place and there prayed.

And we're told it was his habit to get up early.

In fact I think it's pretty clear from our study of the Bible that there was 1 remedy that Christ was challenged with more so than any other.

That's why when he finally got a place to rest out in the boat on the Sea of Galilee, Despite the storm, he was in delta wave sleep.

And he was actually catching up on his sleep.

But I think the reason why he was able to do so well.

He didn't really suffer any chronic illnesses or acute illnesses.

The only disease he had was inflicted on him, blood loss, anemia, and all the trauma, physical and emotional trauma and all of that, but the act of prayer to God actually helps us, potentially, even more than sleep does in restoring our mind.

And so, in fact, there's 2 things that we ought to be aware of.

I don't have the study here, and I hesitate to share it without the study, but I think the fact that you invited me to speak, maybe there's some degree of trust in what I'm about ready to say.

But exercise, you know, we have New Start.

Which remedy do you think is more important to get enough of, physical exercise or sleep?

But you're actually better off shorting yourself of sleep and getting up early and exercising than getting more sleep and not getting exercise that day.

So exercise is actually more important than sleep.

And a lot of times we give ourselves excuses of not getting exercise in regards to that.

Now, you know, I think if it's only 3 hours of sleep, as you'll see, it would be different.

It's probably better for you to get your fourth hour than to get up after 3 hours and exercise.

But The evidence isn't quite as solid yet, but it'd be worth studying.

And certainly there's indirect evidence that prayer may be more important than sleep.

I think Christ believed it was that way because Here he is getting up a great while before day and going into a solitary place and praying.

Stage 1, now we're going to go to the daily rest, which is what Antoinette asked me to speak on here this afternoon.

You drift in and out of sleep, and you can be awakened easily.

Your eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows.

So you actually are still even moving at this stage.

And at the end of this stage as you start to go into stage 2, you will experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling.

I don't know if you've seen these individuals kind of jerk and there's kind of this sensation of falling.

This is a sign that they're actually well in Stage 1 sleep and going into Stage 2 sleep.

Now we have a lot of people come to our program and maybe this is why I have no, I haven't, Antoinette hasn't given me any logic for any of the titles that she's given me.

We haven't had a chance to speak, but I'm guessing maybe she assigned this to me because we have a lot of individuals that have sleep problems that come to our program.

In fact, 90% of individuals that come to our program have significant problems with sleep.

And often, they think it's their main problem.

And in reality, sleep problems are more caused by a secondary issue than just a primary sleep issue.

So when someone comes to me with insomnia or early morning awakening or hypersomnia, I don't just treat that condition.

I'm looking for the reasons why this is occurring.

And often the reasons do have to do with depression and anxiety, particularly the anxiety part of things.

And they always think, wait a minute doctor, if you would just give me something so I get sleep, then my anxiety's gonna go away.

Yes, I have anxiety, but my anxiety is due to my sleep deprivation.

And if that's solved, then my anxiety's going to go away.

Well, the scientific studies have shown, no, it won't go away.
