Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body: Making the Connection

Well, my talk today, you know, as a dentist, I've been technically correct, suffered in the oral medicine part of it.

And this is, so this has actually been good for me.

But before we begin, we're going to pray, Okay?

Father God, we thank you, Lord, for the gift of your presence, the wisdom and knowledge that you have brought to us as a group of dentists that desire to serve you.

And Father, we recognize that we are lacking in our skills and in our knowledge to be able to convey that to those around us that need to know you better.

So Lord, I just pray that during our time together this morning or this afternoon, we might get a glimpse of a more perfect way that we might be able to represent you to those we serve, to our families, communities, to our local churches.

And Lord, may it all be done to your name's honor and glory, Because Lord, we long to see you soon, and we thank you for the part that we can play as dental and medical professionals.

Lord, just bless us now with your presence.

So In our local church, we have what's called the Dinner with a Doctor program.

Have any of you heard of Dinner with a Doctor?

It's where we have a doctor come in and speak for an hour.

And I've often been asked to give a dental presentation.

And I thought, okay, well, what can I do that would, you know, besides telling people, you know, don't eat sugar and candy and drink a lot of soda and all of that and how to brush and floss, you know, what would be a good thing?

And so I got intrigued about, you know, the whole new start acronym that we have come to understand.

How could that really play into the oral health too?

I actually kind of put this program together, which I kind of presented at our dinner with the doctor program and she's had a major role in that and Anyway, it's it's it's been It's been a neat thing and but you know as people come I mean we get like a hundred and 20 people coming every month to the program and And they come and they come and come, and you often wonder, you know, is this really affecting change?

And, you know, I don't know about you, but sometimes change is difficult for us.

And so I'm hoping today that we can kind of recognize the formula that for lasting change.

And so our talk today is not so much 1 that we'll, we're not setting out to scientifically prove the relationship between our, you know, the oral health and its effects on our bodies, but rather establish the fact that there is a symbiotic relationship between healthy living and our oral health.

And also establish a little bit of the power for lasting change.

So healthy mouth, healthy body, making the connection.

You know, as dentists, we know that our mouth is often the window to the overall health of our bodies, right?

And you've heard the saying is what you eat is what you are.

Well, more and more the scientific community is bearing this out as a statement of fact.

And you've also maybe heard the expression junk in, junk out.

If we put in the wrong data, we're gonna get bad data out.

So, well, it holds true that if our mouth is really the portal to our bodies, then if we're putting junk in, whatever we put in, it's gonna bear fruit in our bodies, including our teeth.

And so we see this kind of a two-way street in the mouth-body connection.

How often have you looked in a patient's mouth and they have poor teeth and you also recognize that they have poor health?

And again, many people who have good teeth are going to have good health.

Now, you know, if we take care of our bodies, if we, or our teeth, you know, if we feed it well, if we exercise it, if we groom it and love it, guess what?

That's going to take care of us, isn't it?

Well, you know, let me tell you a little bit myself, about myself at home.

And this is a picture of my youngest daughter.

And she's actually into breeding horses and raising the young foals.

And I've actually had the privilege of actually pulling those horses out myself.

It's kind of neat, but I'm fascinated by the whole process of breeding, okay?

Because it's amazing how much attention that these breeders actually go into producing that perfect foal.

You know, first of all, you have to find that great mare.

This is that red 1 there, that's our mare Devon.

But you have to have a great mare, you have to have a great stallion.

And if you want to produce a good hunter jumper, then you're going to get a mare and a stallion that are gonna produce that type of offspring.

You want a good temperament, you want good confirmation, and if you do all of that, then you're gonna end up with, well before we get there, during the pregnancy of that mare, what are you going to do?

You're going to make sure it has good food, good water, good exercise.

And in Tennessee, it's important that during the last 3 months of that pregnancy that you take that that mare off of the pasture because the fescue in Tennessee has these little bugs in it that actually can produce negative effects on the foal.

So you have to take her off the grass and give her some hay from out of state.

But you also put them on a special formula for the growth of that foal in utero.

And if you do that, you're going to end up with a nice little foal.

Now what's important is once that foal is born, this little 1 right here, that 1 there too, I actually delivered this 1 right out of the mare.

But it's within the first 30 minutes, that little foal has to have the mother's colostrum.

If not, she's gonna suffer some immunity defects.

And actually, this was our last year's foal.

I don't have a picture of this year's, but this year's actually, we had a little trouble getting that colostrum.

But being present and loving that foal from the very moment of birth, it's a process called imprinting.

Well, if you imprint that foal, that foal is going to be your best friend for life.

And This little 1 here, she is a real sweet, well, both of them, my daughter and the foal.

They all take after their mother, by the way.

But the point is, I continue to be fascinated that how our Creator God made his creatures to function at their very best when they are fed well, exercised, groomed, and loved.

So here we have this cycle of health, and I love this cycle of health.

You know, if we, you know, we want to give, you know, give our bodies the best food, the best exercise, the best grooming, and the best kind of love.

And I just, I just have to believe that our Creator God is intensely interested in us functioning at our very best, getting all of these elements.

And I can't express the last point enough, the best kind of love.

Because if you love something, then what's going to happen?

You're going to want to give it the best, don't you?

And if you feel loved, you're prone to take care of yourself in honor of the 1 who is loving you, right?

So it's kind of my prayer that as we go through this today, you know, we will know that we are loved by someone greater than you or I that desires the best or the best for us.

So then, let's take a closer look at the scientific end of this approach.

When I actually put this program together, my son Brian was with me in practice.

He's now at Loma Linda specializing in orthodontics.

And but anyway, if we, you know, if this cycle of health is true that all aspects of our being, then it should hold true that if we have a healthy mouth, we will more than likely have and experience a healthy body and vice versa.

However, if we choose the principle of junk in and junk out, guess what?

Unfortunately, this two-way street of our health cycle begins to falter and our mouth-body systems that are intimately connected begin to show signs of failure.

Well, in the year 2000, There was a milestone report put out by the Surgeon General of the United States.

And it kind of was a milestone in the history of oral health.

It was to alert the Americans to the full meaning of oral health and its importance to general health and well-being.

And that there was a lack of general awareness on the public's part to the oral diseases and how it affected our bodily health as well.

Making the Great Commission the Center of Our Medical Practice: Practical examples of ministry in a medical office

Father in heaven, today I just pray you would hide me behind the cross.

And as I speak today that the message that those in this conference need to hear, those who may be listening to this on audio verse, help them to receive the message that they need for their time and their context.

So, these are the objectives that we are covering.

We're hoping to understand why the Great Commission needs to be at the center of our medical missionary work to understand the importance of sacrificial love in that pursuit.

We're also gonna talk a little bit about partnering with the church.

And we will demonstrate how to incorporate practical applications of what I call design thinking in medical ministry.

We're gonna start by talking the first 20 minutes about just my journey into medical ministry, and then after that discuss, kind of talk about practical examples and the things that I've learned.

Okay, I'm gonna grab my notes in case I get nervous here.

I noticed from the beginning that God had created in me a desire to serve.

I remember at an early age, around age 16, I had went to the general conference in 2000 in Toronto.

And I remember calling some of my classmates.

And we went and we ministered to those in an orphanage.

In college, that same passion pretty much persisted.

I went to Andrews University And there in the early 2000s, I went to this ministry called Benton Harbor Outreach, and I ultimately would become a leader in that ministry, where over 100 students would be present every week as we did children's ministries, gathering children, singing songs with them, playing games with them, teaching them Bible stories, praying with people in the neighborhood from door to door, giving Bible studies.

In the nursing home, we had a ministry there where we were kind of singing to those that were there.

And what I found was that service, there was a sweet taste of service.

I found connection, I found challenge, I found ministry.

And I knew that's what my life was gonna be.

But I want, the question I have for you is, what would that take?

What would it take not just to have a few scattered experiences of service, but to have a life that is full of service?

Essentially to have a life that is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

What would it look like for that to happen?

It was, that was the final year of my family medicine residency.

And I was a senior resident at Kaiser Permanente there in Northern Los Angeles.

And most of my classmates ended up getting some very nice Kaiser jobs.

If you know Kaiser, they take very good care of you.

And a lot of physicians will work their whole life to finally be a Kaiser doctor.

And I had an opportunity to get into the Kaiser system because I had went through their training program.

I was also engaged to a girl that was from Southern California and we were just going to settle down right there and life was going to be good.

But if you have plans, don't hold onto them too tightly because we make plans, but God laughs.

And My plans to get married began to deteriorate, okay?

It turns out that though the woman I was with initially had promised to marry me, she no longer could move forward with her plans towards a matrimony.

And the relationship began to deteriorate and it finally ended.

And I remember there was, during that time, that this was after we had broken up, and I was driving from Los Angeles to Lomeland and spend the night with my sister and brother.

And in my mind I was determined, I'm gonna get back together with this girl.

And I'm gonna tell her all the reasons why.

Alright, I'm gonna use the strength and force of logic as to why we should get back together and had all these reasons.

We were, you know, we could do music together, we could do ministry together, we could do da, da, da, da, da, da, on and on and on.

And while I was driving back, God told me something.

It was because while I was driving and I was rehearsing how this encounter was gonna go, I decided to listen to a sermon.

And in the middle of that sermon, by the way, I don't remember what the sermon was about.

It wasn't about marriage, it wasn't about relationships.

But during that sermon, he read this verse.

And that verse is found in Isaiah 43, 18 and 19.

It says this, forget the former things, do not dwell in the past.

Now it springs up, Do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland." And the moment I heard that, God was telling me, you know what, Andrew?

And I remember finding God and I said, God, is this really what you're convicting me to do?

Sometimes, many times, I don't hear the voice of God very clearly, but there are these moments in life, boom, and it's crystal clear.

That day I chose, you know what, I'm putting this relationship behind me for good.

Maybe God is opening up something else for me.

I didn't know what it was, but I knew that I had to obey it in order to know what that was going to be.

Around this same time, I met a man named John Torquato.

Now, this was my final year of residency and we get to set up electives.

And I knew that I wanted to kind of see what life would look like beyond residency.

And I wanted to spend some time with physicians who I admired.

I admired James Appel, he was a missionary doctor out in Chad, had been there for 10 plus years, and so I set up an elective to be with him.

But my sister had spent some time with an interesting doctor.

She had went, she had taken some time to go to Spokane, Washington, where they were doing an evangelistic series, led up by a pastor and a physician.

Now this physician was interesting, because he was doing evangelism in Spokane, Washington, but his practice was in North Idaho, there in Hayden.

But what he had done is he had taken time off his private practice just to do this evangelism with this pastor.

And not only that, he had put himself on a pastor's wage, even as a physician.

Not just that, but he also had a dedicated staff, all who were Seventh-day Adventist Christians, many who worked sacrificially.

At that time, he even had a nurse working for him for $10 an hour.

Why would somebody do something like that?

He called me a few days later to spend some time there, not in Washington, but in Idaho.

And before I knew it, I was on a plane going to a state that was famous for 1 thing, potatoes.

So that everyone knows, that's the only thing people know about Idaho, it seems.

So, as I was there, I noticed that the person who picked me up was none other than the attending himself, John Torquato.

Usually, you know, when you do rotations at other sites, It's not the attending that comes and picks you up.

You gotta figure that out, or you gotta talk to a coordinator, okay?

Always on Call: God’s Purpose for a Professional Parent

I am a dentist and I am married to a dentist and today I'm going to talk about being a professional and being a parent at the same time.

So the title is Always On Call, God's Purpose for a professional parent.

So this afternoon I kind of want to talk about Bible and spirit of prophecy insight and real life scenarios to guide you on your path as you balance, reorganize, and purpose your life to glorify God through your profession and your family.

And how to learn to thrive and not just survive.

1 of my favorite quotes, an angel could not ask for a higher mission than that of a mother.

I grew up in Florida, went to Southern Adventist University, studied religious studies and biology, Moved on from there and went to Loma Linda.

And met my husband, married him in 2004, my senior year.

And Soon after we got married and I graduated, we moved to Saipan.

And so we've been missionaries overseas from 2005 to 2018.

Saipan is a small island south of Japan, north of Guam.

And the baby Brinley, she just turned 3 on Monday.

So I sang her happy birthday over the phone because I was already on the East Coast.

The first, acknowledge the importance that God places on the family circle and the parental care of children at home.

Number 2, accepting the years of education you have and acknowledging God's additional plan for your life of raising your children to be shining stars for him.

Number 3, combining one's professional passion and family life, all the while remembering that the care of children is for time and eternity.

So during the next hour, I just kind of want to get the ball rolling in your head.

Maybe you can have a conversation with your spouse that will kind of go like this.

Are we doing all that we can to raise our children for God?

Are we engaging them daily and teaching them about His Word?

So I began searching the scriptures and the spirit of prophecy, mostly Adventist home and child guidance, before the birth of my first daughter.

They're all 2 years apart, so It's easy for me to remember their birth date, their birth years.

And so I compiled this material over the years and then just kind of want to share the importance that God places on family.

And I understand that many of you are highly trained medical professionals.

And I also want to acknowledge that not all parents are able to stay at home for a myriad of reasons.

Some families are comprised of a single parent who must work.

Others have both parents who need to work outside of the home full time.

What I'm sharing with you today is spirit of prophecy and Bible information that I found helpful for myself personally, as a professional, and as a mother.

And each family will have their own system of what works best for them.

And with prayer we can all do the best thing each day with God's help and he promises to fill in where we lack.

Isn't that amazing that he would help us floundering humans just by a prayer?

Dear Lord, thank you for this time that we have to organize our thoughts and think more about our family and the important responsibility that you've given us as parents, and that we will be able to do all that we can for our children, and we trust that you will fill in where we lack.

So objective number 1, acknowledge the importance that God places on the family circle and the parental care of children at home.

Our work for Christ is to begin with the family.

In the home, There is no missionary field more important than this.

Parents have the noblest of all missionary fields.

Make it your life work to form the characters of your children according to the divine pattern.

As workers for God, our work is to begin with those nearest.

There is no more important missionary field than this.

We need missionary fervor in our homes that we may bring the word of life before the members of our families and lead them to seek a home in the kingdom of God.

The management and instruction of children is the noblest missionary work that any man or a woman can undertake.

You will hear this theme throughout the presentation because it is found a lot in the spirit of prophecy.

You might look like my daughter after I read this quote to you.
