A Love Affair With the Law

My heart thrills to be here this Sabbath morning.

I don't know if it's the reverberation of this building, but somehow I seem to have heard the angels sing this morning, and just touches our hearts and the beautiful hymns of Jesus' love, His care.

Now maybe it's been said and maybe you've done something already, but there's a young man and his good wife this morning.

They're spending their last Sabbath with Edmund Hope before going to the mission field.

Norman has and his good wife have been a wonderful pillar I think at Edmund Hope and I've gotten acquainted with him several years ago and just have deep appreciation for his walk with God and his ministry that he has given.

We'll miss you here, but the Holy Spirit will have to fill the gap, You know, and he has ways of doing that, and God bless you there in Trinidad, right?

Well, this morning we like to think about a dimension of God's love, to me, is very deep and profound and very wonderful.

And it's also the object of Satan's great attack and controversy.

There are 2 mountains in the Bible that speak about God's self-revelation and the manifestation of God's goodness, his glory, in a most spectacular way.

Golgotha, where the glory of God's love was expressed in deep and profound sacrifice of God's only Son, where he gave his life as a ransom for the human race and for the sins of this world, revealing his goodness, the strength, and his power for the children that he has created.

Nothing can supersede what happened on Mount Calvary.

But there's another mountain where God displayed His power and glory, and that was in giving the 10 Commandments.

Mount Sinai, where God's very own voice was heard by maybe a million, maybe 2000000 of people.

God's very own voice speaking to the children of Israel.

And I would like to read the Bible text that speaks about that.

Now we know Exodus 20, and we're going to talk about Exodus 20 this morning some, but this is Exodus 19, verses 16 through 19.

Now it's good to read the whole chapter, but we will only read 16 through 19.

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning that there were thunders and lightnings and thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud, said all the people that was in the camp trembled.

And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the nether part of the mountain.

And Mount Sinai was altogether on smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire.

And the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace.

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

This was the reference point for Israel in the meeting with God.

We are told early in the chapter that it took 3 days of hard preparation, soul preparation.

They were to bathe and clean their clothes and prepare to meet their God in a most holy and dramatic setting.

A barrier was placed around the foot of the mountain beyond which no 1, man nor beast, was to pass.

And then lightning and terrible thunder preceded the approach of God.

Smoke enveloped the mountain and ascended the sky like from a furnace.

And in Hebrews 12, 21, it says that all the people, including Moses, were exceedingly fearful and trembled in the presence of a holy God.

The long sound of the trumpet stopped, the earth was still.

And then the voice of God was heard speaking the 10 great principles of His character.

It was opening His heart to the human race on Mount Sinai.

Those 10 principles of His character and His government that would guide the universe.

With what a holiness and reverence and awe.

The Lord taught the children of Israel to regard his holy sacred law.

There was nothing that we know of in the entire Bible that demonstrated that much glory, that much power, and that much holiness.

I can see why he tries to undermine the very foundation of God's character, trying to make him look bad.

There's a great controversy, and we'll talk more about that in just a minute.

Never before, never since, was so much packed in so little.

10 brief statements, yet comprehensive, of all human conduct.

The only law that can effectively control the conscience of man.

For all time, a condensed manual of human behavior that covers the entire field of human conduct.

And heaven's expression of God's love, Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5 through 7, the explanation in the New Testament.

Beautiful and glorious, Jesus himself in person explained it in case people misunderstood and perverted the glory and the foundation of heaven's love to this planet and to the universe.

It is this law that is the object of the great controversy.

It is right at the center between Christ and Satan.

It is this law which will be the focal point of the controversy in the last days in which we're living.

Many people in the world today, including too many Christians, are on the wrong side on this important topic.

And I have to share with you, in Nebraska while I was teaching at Union College, we had prison ministries.

I tell students I spent 20 years, good time, in jail.

But someday in the future, when the heat will come on, the Holy Spirit withdrawn from the earth and Satan will have his way, I may end up in jail again.

I'm quite comfortable in there behind those steel walls.

What we'll do then is hopefully what I've been doing back there.

Give Bible studies, play the piano, sing, and have the young people know the Lord in there.

Maybe that's what it takes to evangelize the prisons.

And help those inmates there to learn about the Lord.

But what happened there, we were talking about the things of the word, and we were talking about the law of God.

And 1 day they came and said, Brother Sieg, they used to call me Reverend, I said don't call me Reverend, call me Brother.

Brother Sieg, last night there's a group coming in, a church group, and we were telling them what you told us about the law.

They said, no, we don't have to keep the law.
