Gethsemane, Crucifixion and Resurrection

Reading selections from the Gospels, starting in Matthew 26 verse 38, Then he, Jesus, said to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.

He went a little further and fell on his face and prayed, saying, "'O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.

Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.

Glorify your Son, that your Son also may glorify you.

And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

I've finished the work which you have given me to do.

And now, O Father, glorify me together with yourself, with the glory that which I had with you before the world was.

I have manifested your name to the men whom you have given me.

Holy Father, keep through your name those whom you have given me, that they may be 1 as we are.

I've given them your word, and the world has hated them because they're not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

And I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.

That they may be 1 just as we are 1, that the world may know that you have sent me.

Father, I desire that they also whom you gave me may be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which you have given me before the foundation of the world.

And behold, Judas, 1 of the 12, with the great multitude, with swords and clubs, came.

Now his betrayer had given them a sign, saying, Whomever I kiss, he is the 1.

Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, Greetings Rabbi, and kissed him.

But Jesus said to him, Friend, why have you come?

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took him.

Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

And those who had laid hold of Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest where the scribes and elders were assembled.

At last 2 false witnesses came forward and said, this fellow said I'm able to destroy the temple of God and build it in 3 days.

But Jesus kept silent And the high priest answered and said to him, I put you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.

And Jesus said to him, it is as you said.

Then the high priest tore his clothes saying, he's spoken blasphemy he's deserving of death.

Then they spat in his face and beat him and others struck him with the palms of their hands saying, prophesy to us Christ who's the 1 who struck you?

And when morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.

And when they had bound him, They led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Now Jesus stood before the governor and the governor asked him saying, Are you the king of the Jews?

And while he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how many things they testify against you but he answered him not 1 word so the governor marveled greatly now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude 1 prisoner whom they wished and at the time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas therefore they had gathered together and Pilate said to them who do you want me to release to you Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?

Pilate said to them, what then shall I do with Jesus?

Then the governor said, Why, what evil has he done?

But they cried out all the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

And when Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising he took water and washed his hands before the multitude saying I'm innocent of the blood of this just person you see to it and all the people answered and said His blood be on us and our children.

Then he released Barabbas to them, and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the prelatorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him, and they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

And when they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and a reed in His right hand, and they bowed the knee before him and mocked him saying hail king of the Jews then they spat on him and they took the reed and struck him on the head and when they had mocked him they took the robe off him but put his own clothes on him, and led him away to be crucified.

And those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying, you who destroy the temple and build it in 3 days save yourself if you are the Son of God come down from the cross.

Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes and elders said, He saved others himself he cannot save.

If he is the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross and we will believe him.

He trusted in God, let him deliver him now, if he will have him.

And now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

Then behold, the veil in the temple was torn in 2 from top to bottom and the earth quaked and the rocks were split and the graves were opened.

So when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that happened they feared greatly saying truly this was the Son of God.

That day was the preparation, and Sabbath drew near.

And the woman who had come from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how his body was laid.

Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils, And they rested according to the commandment.

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they and certain other women with them came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.

But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

And it happened as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, 2 men stood by them in shining garments.

Why do you seek the living among the dead?

Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the 11.

And their words to them seemed like idle tales, and they did not believe them.

But Peter arose and ran to the tomb and stooping down he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves and he departed marveling to himself at what had happened.

So they came and held him by the feet and worshipped him.

Then the 11 disciples saw him, and they worshipped him.

Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.

And thus it is necessary for the Christ to suffer and rise from the dead the third day.

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem.

And he said Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all the things that I've commanded you, and lo I am with you always, even until the end of the age.

We thank you and praise you for your goodness, for your mercy, for your grace, for being willing to come to this earth to humble yourself, to suffer, to be spat upon, to be nailed to a tree, to be ridiculed and mocked, and to hang your head and to die in our place, experiencing that second death that we don't have to.

Lord, because of your goodness, because of your grace, we can look forward to a better day.

And you have shown that you do in fact hold the keys to death and haze because you are not a dead King but a living King a risen Savior a risen Lord and so we pray that you will be risen again anew in our hearts today that we will live for you and tell the world about this Christ who fulfilled all prophecy and this coming King that is coming soon to take us home is our prayer in Jesus' name, amen.
