How to Edit Audio for Radio Training - Part 1

Basically I'm gonna play this, Elcina are we plugged in?

Grand Rapids Healthy You will be presenting picnic foods including recipes and samples on April 29th at 630 p.m.

At the Central Seventh Day Adventist Church located...

So we're going to record that we're doing a 30-second commercial.

I'm going to take the intro deduction that she did.

I'm going to take the first event, it quits about 24 seconds, I'm going to grab the end, I'm going to put this onto a new file, and we're going to put some music on it.

Okay, that's the first segment, we're past that first segment, for the recording you won't see it but we're past the 24 seconds we're at 38 seconds what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that first the introduction from 0 to 28 I could do this a couple different ways, but 0 to 28, 24, I'm going to make a new file.

I just threw in the introduction in the first 24 seconds.

I'm going to go to the end of the original recording, the raw.

Between the brackets, in the blue brackets is what you're going to hear.

The blue region on the screen is on the second file.

But anytime you're within the blue region is what you play.

So let's listen to, we're trying to find the end.

Okay I see I haven't got, I'm pretty sure this is where it is now.

And I'm going to go back to my 1 that I'm creating.

Now I'm going to show you a few other things.

I don't have my mouse here so I'm gonna have to zoom it up here.

So right now, if you look at that blue range, that's the range that we're talking about, and at the bottom of this screen here, this is the Gold Wave software, it says it goes, this blue range that I've got identified, highlighted, is from 0, over here on the left, to 43 seconds.

Now do you see a problem with my 30 second commercial at this moment, my 30 second spot, I'm trying to create a 30 second spot but I've got 43 seconds.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take out this, when I pasted them together I had a gap in between here.

When I look at that, if you look at this highlighted, new highlighted range, inside the parentheses right here in this line right here says 5.8.

So I know of my 43 seconds I can take 5.8 out.

So I'm just going to hit delete right there.

So now what I'm at there, I've got right now, I'm going to see what I've got.

I'm going to go, hopefully, take my left, I'm going to go back to 0, I'm going to go to the very end.

So basically we're at 37.89, we're still over 8 seconds.

So I'm going to have to cut something else out.

I find in my commercial all I care about really is StrongTowerRadio.org okay if I have to get rid of that you can submit your your community calendar thing.

Let's look at that blue highlighted range right now that's 7.5 seconds.

Let me also, that's true, let's listen to, I don't want to start deleting stuff until I know what I'm deleting, right?

So between the brackets the little green arrow Means play and inside the bracket.

Let's see what I've highlighted what I think I'm going to Do you think I can get rid of that?

I know I'm cutting a little bit of flesh, but I'm not cutting all the meat.

I need to find out what my time is at this time.

So let's go back to the beginning, go back to 0, the beginning of our commercial, go to the end, And here's the magic moment.

I can go in and I can, I'll trim it right there.

I'm going to take a little bit of time right here.

I've got a little dead space on the end right here.

I'm within my range, but I like to have a little bit of music, ins and outs.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this.

1 thing I can do, there is a tool that I can do some compressing.

Now don't get overwhelmed with these instructions.

I'm just showing you what you can do and how quickly you can do it.

Elsina is going to take us more in depth and over the next couple days you will be able to do exactly what I'm doing.

I'm going to do a compression, but if I do a compression, It's going to change the way it sounds.

If you do that, it changes the pitch so it sounds like it should sound.

How to Edit Audio for Radio Training - Part 2

Great Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for these people.

These people are looking at editing as a ministry.

And so, dear Lord, help us to find a way to fulfill your desire to save your people.

I was thinking about you about 4 o'clock in the morning, okay?

And I just wanted to ask, I have a feeling we have a variety of skill levels here.

And so, my thought is, I would like to take those who need the basic skills and maybe move you over to this particular area and then the others that are...

Yeah, the ones who have previous experience and they're just trying to adapt to the software, Elcino will probably come around and help you out with that particular thing.

What I'd like you all to do, this is my personal opinion, is to go in and go get the voice recording I had yesterday and try to reproduce.

If you think you can do it on your own, you're at the advanced skills, I'd like you to take that.

That was April 12th, that's under voice recordings, April 12th, and I would like you to make a 30 second commercial just like I did.

And then the rest of you, these computers, wouldn't that be our day that the windows are updating?

So if you want to stay where you're at, you can go up the voice, it's under the training videos.

There's 1 computer there and the other one's coming up in a moment here.

I'd like to have you congregated but it's not.

Those who feel comfortable and feel like you've got it, go and open up that voice.

What you want to do is, you could do it a couple different ways, but what I usually do is I cut out that, I copy that portion.

I take the portion which is that first 24 seconds, 0 to 24, I take it, it's got that copy function.

So you block it, whatever's in blue is blocked.

And so what I do, and I like to use the keys, you probably got it on your mouse, of copy and paste and delete.

I tend to use the keyboard keys which is control C or control C.

So I just go control C and then I open up a new file.

You open up a new file and you just, you got it?

Just kind of follow along and listen and what's that?

It's under, it's under, you've got camp meeting.

Okay, if you don't mind, you'll have to run out after a while.

Can you call up my computer and get me up and running?

We'll have that up for you in a little bit.

So go under new and you'll get a number of options there.

You'll want a length, let's put it at 5 minutes just for the sake of it.

It's up here, the 3 boxes, It says number of channels, don't fool with that, number of sampling rate, initial file length.

Now you just look, you use the down arrow, use the down arrow and find out the inside the box and go to 5 minutes that's 5 period 0 0 dot 0 and then you say okay so I'll give you a demonstration here okay so you see my screen right here I'm going to open up, something's opening up for me.

Okay, I'm gonna go, we're gonna start over again, I mean for some of you.

I'm gonna go to file, going to, file, open.

Now, we're looking for, we're looking for the training videos.

You have to open an existing file just to get the editing part of it.

So you want to go up here, I'll have to use my little cursor, I've got to get used to it.

Go to voice recording, go to voice recording, and if you get, open that up and you'll get to April 12th.

So I'm going to go to, see my, I've got to get used to using my pointer.

This voice recording, this middle 1 which is April 12th, see that right there?

I'm going to take a portion of this right here and I'm going to copy it.

So I'm gonna take, I'm blocking, whatever's in blue, remember, is what we're copying.

So this is the section I want right there.

If you had any doubt, you could all, remember, You can listen to it.

You see inside the brackets and the green arrow is play.

That's going to stop at the end of the blue arrow because of the 1 I chose.

The 1 I chose up here, that's within the brackets.

How do you find out the duration that I've got recorded?

Inside the parentheses tells you how long the the portion that you've chosen.

It's probably because I don't know it's a couple things.

You need to be your bracket needs between here and here Okay, okay, okay, we're gonna What brother what's your name again?

Carl you know what did what do you think?

He chose the green arrow by itself and what do you think the green...

Exactly there's 2 green arrows, 3 green arrows.

The first green arrow where do you think the first green arrow starts from?

It just keeps going forever, forever, until it gets to the end of the recording.

The inside the bracket is only inside the bracket.

It starts inside the bracket, stops inside the bracket.

Our great Heavenly Father, I just want to thank you again that you love all the people on this earth, and you want us to love them too.

And 1 way we do that is to bring the gospel to them, And the way we're doing it at this moment is learning how to bring the Gospel to them.

So we're just part of a cog in the wheel to spread this Gospel.

Give us wisdom, give us enough confidence to get us going and keep us going, but not so much that it keeps us from continuing.

So dear Lord bless us in Jesus name, Amen.

So yesterday I left you in a state of despondency.

Well, hopefully it wasn't despondency, but it was like, this is a little more difficult than I thought it was going to be.

Literally, practice makes perfect and you will feel, hopefully by this afternoon, you'll be doing stuff and say, I can do this.

What we've done is we've opened up, we have a file, it was Laurie's Namens, 1 to 3, and it was, what we did is we grabbed 4 minutes and 25 seconds, we have about a minute segment, We've taken that minute segment, we've parenthesized it, put it in, then we copied it with control C, we opened up a brand new segment, a blank segment, and then we just pasted in there.

Now what they're going to do, what you're going to do is once you've got it up there and I'll be with you in a second you can start editing it.

What you're going to do, you're basically taking that segment that we were talking about, we're going to copy it, we're just going to click up here, we're going to paste it, Control-V, and that's what we got.

I'm going to also trim it to take everything else out of there so you're right up with the rest of us now so what we're gonna do now let's 1 of the things do you remember what Elsina did the first thing what was the first thing that she did?

She used this 1 with the with the speaker and the exclamation mark.

Now some of you might remember I don't use this method, but I think it's a great 1.

So I'm going to control V, I'm going to put mine up there.

What she did is she went up and she took that, she uses this button right here to maximize the volume And what did she do to bring that up?

Did she go with percentage or what did she use?

And I don't know if that gets trained by itself.

Well, if you want it to be within plus or minus 25, then you want to look at the half dynamic range.

That's what Kevin suggested is we go to the half dynamic range.

The 50% that you were talking about before.

I'm going to forego that particular step because it looks like my dynamics have already been boosted as high as I need them.

So what I, next she goes is she goes over to the noise gate.

These are, this is supposed to be a gate.

That's just a reverse, the reverse of what I did.

Go control all, get the, You want to select all.

With you, what you might want to do is, let's try her method.

Why don't you use the plus marker and bring it up 25%.

Okay, just hit okay and let's see what happens.

Okay, what we're going to do is you apply the noise gate next, so you go click on the noise gate.

Did she go with the default on the noise gate?

Look at the screen on the left hand side.

I have some noise over there on the very end.

It'll actually take out the second noise out there when I go redo.

You can also zoom in and see it looks like it took out, do you know what a breath, the waveform of a breath looks like?

Usually, let me zoom out, usually a breath, I'm looking for a breath form, it usually hugs the line and it's fairly intense.

I'm going to, just for the sake of it, I'm going to go down here.

Okay see that I'm going to zoom in on this area right here.

More than likely see this waveform right here This is more than likely a breath.

In order to find it, I had to go to another section.

It might be so quiet You can't hear it, but let me try it again.

What happens is this noise gate, when I go to this noise gate, I think if I push it, it will eliminate, it will disappear.

Taking out those breaths, you take, people take a breath, I've never calculated, but it's about every 10 or 15 seconds and you have a 60 second thing, you've got at least 4 of those in the middle.

And let me, You can get rid of that breath.
