Salvation and the Sanctuary #1

It is a pleasure to be here this evening with you.

And anytime there are young people together and I have an opportunity to join them and to share some of the things that the Lord has taught me is a rich privilege.

But in there we find the plan of salvation revealed.

In its simplicity, we find incredible depth.

My name is George Baute, and I pastor here at the Upper Columbia Conference.

And my interest in the sanctuary began when I was 9 years old.

My family, my mother and my sister and I, to be more specific, came out of the Catholic Church.

And we were attending a VBS there at the local Adventist church, and that particular VBS, the theme was the sanctuary.

And in my home, though we grew up Catholic, my mother always taught us that the Bible was God's holy word, even though we didn't read it because it was the job of the priest to teach us what was in it.

And she taught us how the law of God is very holy.

And so we held it in high esteem, we just didn't read it.

And I remember in that VBS, they gave us a little model of the 10 Commandments and I held it in my hand and I can still remember the tingly feeling that just went all over me as I was holding in my hand the law of God.

And it left an indelible impression upon me.

Now later, as the years passed, I walked away from the Lord, and there is a story behind that which we won't get into tonight But later when I came back to the Lord in my late 20s And I came back to church It was interesting that I found myself confronted with this discussion of whether or not I wasn't in the middle of it, I was just listening to it, but whether or not the sanctuary was really important to us as a people.

And there were those that said that it was very important to us, and there were those that said it wasn't.

And so I did something very unusual, very unique.

I studied it for myself and what I discovered is that The Bible is completely saturated with sanctuary imagery and terminology to the point that if you pulled all of that out, that literally the Bible would fall apart in your hands.

I discovered that the New Testament writer writes in a manner that he assumes the reader understands the sanctuary.

And if 1 does not understand the sanctuary, you're only getting half the story from the New Testament writer.

Because there is a depth if you understand the New Testament.

In particular, by the way, when you get into prophecy, Daniel Revelation, saturated in the sanctuary.

But the most beautiful part of the sanctuary And the part that arrested my attention was the plan of salvation is revealed there.

God's answer to the sin problem is revealed there.

How God is going to destroy sin, yet in the process make a way to save the sinner.

When I, in this presentations that I'll be sharing with you, they're going to be very practical.

And many times as I was listening to how important the sanctuary was to us as a people, I would go to various presentations and I would hear that blue meant this and gold meant that, and that's true and it's good and it has its place, but I was struggling inside and I needed victory, and that just wasn't helping me.

So what I'm gonna be presenting, and I'm not downing that, that is important, but it has to lead to an experience with the Lord.

Now, our weekend is entitled Uniquely Adventist.

I love that title, uniquely, uniquely Adventist.

And Seventh-day Adventist is the last piece of the Reformation puzzle.

During the Dark Ages, truth was lost, and a process began to reinstate that which was lost.

And you have groups that God would arise that would bring in elements of truth that have been lost.

For example, the Lutherans brought in sola scriptura, justification by, by faith.

And then you have the Anabaptists who brought baptism by immersion.

And your Methodists, the call to holy living.

Well, Seventh-day Adventists bring something to the table that nobody else brings, and that is the sanctuary.

We are a people birthed from the sanctuary.

And simply put, no sanctuary, no Adventists.

Tonight's presentation, I've entitled it The Importance of the Sanctuary Message.

And what we're gonna do here, we're just gonna go through the counsel given to us from the spirit of prophecy, okay?

And we're gonna see just a sampling of appeals to us as a people to study this.

That's all we're gonna do is just look at a sampling.

It's not an exhaustive search, you can do that on your own.

But I tried to hit some of the high points of the counsel given to us.

Then in the lessons that will follow for tomorrow and 1 on Sunday, the second presentation is entitled The Sanctuary Prayer.

And what we're gonna discover is that the sanctuary actually is a model for prayer.

The sanctuary actually prepares our hearts to approach a living God and it actually teaches us what we need to be praying for.

The third thing we're going to look at is the daily today.

The sanctuary actually teaches us how to walk with Jesus in a practical manner every day.

Number 4, the fourth presentation, I've entitled it, The Good News of the Judgment.

And you know, for most Seventh-day Adventists, when you talk about the judgment, they say October 22, 1844, but beyond that, they really don't know what it's about.

And for many it strikes fear in them, fearful of the decision that the father is going to make in their case.

We're going to learn that the Father is not the 1 to fear at all.

But we're going to discover that there is a fear factor, and we're going to learn what it is that we need to be fearing.

The fifth 1, the fifth presentation, I've entitled it Why Jesus Waits.

Did you know that the sanctuary actually explains the reason for the delay in the second coming?

We're gonna discover that it has nothing to do with the economy or with the Catholic Church, but we're going to discover why?

Jesus has not returned to you and Then the last presentation I have entitled it lessons from the end and In that presentation we're going to take a look at the third phase of the judgment, the executive portion when the wicked are destroyed.

And we're going to pause right there, and we're going to take a broad look at those final moments, and What can we learn from those moments that will benefit us today?

Now, each of you should have a handout in the little blue folder that was given to you.

I like giving handouts for several reasons.

Number 1, it gives you an opportunity to follow me, and when you want to write notes you can do that.

Number 2, so you can go home and make sure that you can check out the preacher that what he was saying was right.

But number 3, it gives you an opportunity to share it.

Because that is what God has called us to do to share this message And so what I'd like to do at this point is to have a word of prayer once more And you've already knelt before the master.

I'm going to ask if you'll bow your head I would like to kneel and have 1 more prayer Gracious father I am so thankful for this gracious opportunity that you have given to us.

And Lord, I am privileged, I am honored, I am humbled, and so grateful that you have called me to share what you have taught me.

But Lord, you know that I cannot give this message without your help at all.

And so I am asking, Father, for your Holy Spirit to be given as already has been prayed.

I pray, Savior, that truly you will give to me your mind.

Salvation and the Sanctuary #2

This weekend is entitled Uniquely Adventist and we learned last night that what makes Adventists unique is the sanctuary message.

It is our contribution to the Reformation.

Ours is the last church, and this is the final contribution.

It is the sanctuary, and in the sanctuary, we not only find our identity as a people, but we also find our message.

And simply put, no sanctuary, no Adventist church.

We are a people born out of the sanctuary.

So it is my privilege to speak on it, and I will share more as to why.

But the sanctuary was given to Israel as a mechanism of instruction to teach Israel how God was going to deal with the sin problem.

It was to help them understand that sin would be destroyed in the end, but a way had been made to save the sinner.

Today the sanctuary points us to what Jesus has done for us in the past, what he's doing for us today, and what he is about to do for us.

Now for this series, there may be some here that perhaps are not well versed in the sanctuary.

I'm hoping that today's presentation will lay a foundation that we are going to build on in the remaining meetings that we will have together.

And for those who already are familiar with the sanctuary, by the grace of God, this will be a refresher for you.

And so what I decided to do is to present this meeting in a practical way.

And I shared last night that I am practical by a fault.

I need to understand how things work and why they work.

And so this presentation that I'll be giving this weekend is not blue means this and gold means that, as important as that is, but rather a practical approach and experience with God.

And so today, for this presentation, I'll be sharing how the sanctuary is a model for prayer.

And I like praying through the sanctuary for 2 reasons.

1 of the reasons is that I am like the ADD poster child.

I have the attention span of a gnat with ADD.

And When I'm praying, my mind wanders this way and that way.

And I don't know if you have that problem where you start out praying and you end up filling out your Walmart list in your mind, but that's me.

Also, You may have experienced praying and maybe even falling asleep and then trying to remember where you left off.

But the sanctuary has helped me to maintain my focus as I am talking to the Lord.

There is another reason why praying to the sanctuary has been a blessing to me, is that the sanctuary prepares my heart to approach a holy God.

There are cues, there are reminders to me of who it is that I am speaking to, but Not only that, but the sanctuary actually prompts me on what I need to be praying for.

And so these are 2 reasons why I like praying through the sanctuary.

Now I want to say that it's not the only way to pray, And I'm not advocating that.

It is interesting to note, however, that if you look on Daniel's prayer in Daniel 9, as well as Christ's prayer that he taught the disciples, you will find very similar elements in the sanctuary.

And I don't believe that that is coincidental at all.

Now, you should have handouts given to you, 2 of them as a matter of fact.

1 is my sermon notes, and the other is a little flyer that you might want to use during your devotional time just as a reminder.

Now, what I'm gonna do this morning, and I shared last night why I use handouts.

Number 1, I want you to be able to focus and you can write notes on there as we go along.

The other is I want you to be able to go home and check out the preacher and make sure that what he's telling lines up with scripture.

And the third reason is that once you've studied it, God has given you an opportunity now to share it, to share it with others.

And so these are the reasons for the handout.

So this morning, we're gonna look at the sanctuary from 3 perspectives.

Number 1, we're gonna look at it as to how how it related to the ministry of the priest.

The priest, of course, his whole life in his work in the sanctuary was a play out of the plan of salvation.

So we're going to take a look at the work of the priest and his role at the various furnishings of the sanctuary.

And then we're gonna take a look at how that role of the priest was to point us to Christ.

Because the sanctuary is all about Jesus.

By the way, knowing that, Isn't that sufficient reason to study it?

So how does the role of the priest point us to Christ?

And then the third perspective is how that prompts me to pray.

So With that introduction, you have already knelt before the master, I'd like to do that, but if you'd bow your heads with me, and as I pray, I would encourage you also to be praying for me.

Father in heaven, I am so excited for this opportunity, but more than that, I am deeply honored.

You are the great, high, and holy 1 who inhabits eternity, and you have given this lump of clay, animated clay, an opportunity to be a representative, an honor that is far too great for me.

And I thank you, Lord, for this, really this privilege of which I could never, ever deserve or earn.

And Savior, as we gather here, Really, dear God, you are going to be presenting to us a message that not only is going to prepare us for your coming, but through us, Lord, to prepare a world.

And so we are asking for the forgiveness of our sins.

We are not worthy, dear God, of your presence, but the blood of Jesus makes us such.

And May the blood of Jesus wash away our sin, that his righteousness may cover us, and that this place will truly be your sanctuary.

We pray, Savior, that your angels of light will be here to impress our hearts and minds, that, Lord, you will communicate to each of us right where we're at and right what we need to hear.

And so Savior, now as your instrument, I pray that I will be completely yielded to you.

I pray, Lord, that you'll bring to me the illustrations that are needed now and may this hour be yours, we ask in Christ's name, amen.

Okay, I'm gonna advance some slides here.

And we're going to begin with a quote here from Great Controversy 518.

And it says, Satan well knows that all whom he can lead to neglect prayer and the searching of the scriptures will be overcome by his attacks.

Therefore, he invents every possible device to engross the mind.

All the devil has to do is distract us and he wins.

And so, Here we find an appeal to spend time in the Word, but also a call for prayer.

So as we look to the sanctuary, 1 of the first things that we learn is that the sanctuary is also a model for when to pray.

At the beginning of each day, the sanctuary began with a service known as the daily.

And the daily began when the sun broke the horizon in the morning.

The priest, there'd be a priest station looking at the horizon, waiting for the sun to break the horizon.

And when it did, he had grabbed a shofar and he would blow it.

And that was the call for all Israel to turn to the sanctuary, to focus their attention there and to pray.

And while they were doing that, there was an offering that was made upon the brazen altar.

And that offering, a burnt offering, was a dedicatory offering.

And while Israel was turning to the sanctuary and praying, it was an appeal for them to dedicate their lives that day to God.

That's how they started their day, and that is also how they ended their day.

So, And of course, the daily consisted of the activities at the brazen altar, at the labor of water, the menorah, the table of showbread, and the golden altar of incense.

The activities here was referred to as the daily.

And we're going to be taking a look at that this morning.

So how does the morning sacrifice bring my attention to the Lord Jesus Christ?

Isaiah 54 verse 4 and 5 referring to Messiah.

It says, speak a word in season to him who is weary.

He awakens my ear to hear as the learned." And so the sanctuary and the example of Christ remind me that I start my day in prayer.

Salvation and the Sanctuary #3

This is session 3 on our talk on the sanctuary.

And in our last presentation, we went through the sanctuary and we saw it as a model for prayer.

And in the process, we were introduced to what was called the daily.

And the daily were those activities that took place day after day in Israel that was part of God's plan in bringing Israel to faith to understand the plan of salvation.

And what we're gonna do is we're gonna bring that experience into our everyday life because I'm a firm believer in being very practical.

Our walk with Jesus is something that is very practical.

And what the daily teaches us is how to have victory over the power of sin.

How to have victory over the power of sin.

You know, as we look at the sanctuary services, if we're going to understand, this is very important, if we're really gonna understand the plan of salvation, there's something that we have to come to grips with, and that is that God is serious about sin.

If there was another way, He would have taken that way.

There was no other way to save us but to sacrifice His Son to save you and me.

That tells me that he is very serious about his dealings with sin, because sin destroys.

And in Matthew, in the handout, you should have your handout there, in Matthew 1, verse 21, the angel there, when talking to Joseph, revealed in a sentence the mission of Christ.

He said, and she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sin.

This is extremely significant and there's a lot of confusion in the Christian world over this right now, even many within our own ranks.

Jesus did not come to save us in our sin.

We have to remember that the angels of heaven sinned and they were kicked out of heaven for it.

It's vitally important to understand that.

And so this is actually the focus of Christ's mission and the theme of the sanctuary of how God deals with this problem, not only in the world, but more specifically, even within our own lives.

And so what the sanctuary reveals in the end is that the Lord will actually be able to finally destroy sin.

But the sad thing is that many, many will also be lost in that destruction who refused to give it up.

And we certainly do not wish to be part of that.

And so the daily actually shows us how to have victory.

I'd like to begin once more with a word of prayer.

I really appreciate the prayer that was sent up earlier.

If you'll bow your heads with me, please.

Father in heaven, I so thank you so much for the prayer that my dear brother sent up to you already, and I wanna second echo what he said.

However wonderful or eloquently the presentation may be now if you're not in it.

We might as well have gone home and taken a nap.

I am fearful, Lord, that I will be in the way.

Lord, of what you're trying to do here, please, Lord, may Jesus be seen, heard, and felt.

I do pray, have thine own way today at this hour.

Lord, we are here because we are hungering.

We realize within ourselves a lack, We need more.

And so I pray, Lord, you have promised that those that hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled.

We thank you because you promised and you said that your word will not return to you void but it will accomplish the thing for which you sent it.

And so based on your word, not on our feelings, not on looking to ourselves, but looking to Jesus, we are trusting that you will provide now that which we so desperately need.

And we thank you as we ask it in Christ's name.

I am using a Q&A method, question and answer, because I just feel it's the easiest way to get through things and to learn as well as to teach.

So let's take a look at question number 1.
