Climate Crisis at the End of Time

Father in heaven, Lord, thank you today that though your coming is as a thief in the night, to many you've given, in your Word, insights that can help us not only be prepared but to prepare others for the final events that break upon the world.

So bless us as we study some of those today in Christ's name, amen.

So I ask why, you know, and he said basically the same thing that you read in the news reports.

The confluence of extreme weather conditions set the stage.

First came a record-breaking continuing heat wave across the state, temperatures in Death Valley hit 130 degrees Fahrenheit, the hottest ever recorded, and the state saw rolling blackouts for the first time in nearly 2 decades as people tried to turn up their air conditioning to turn down the heat.

Next, the tropical storm in the Pacific Ocean spun moisture towards California, triggering a rare lightning storm that zapped California more than 10, 800 times over a three-day period, sparking small fires across the Bay Area and Northern California.

Then humidity dropped and winds picked up, stoking these small fires until they erupted into full-blown infernos and actually started developing fire tornadoes that sent the fires even further.

As they commented on this, the journalists and various news outlays agencies said things like this.

Usually lightning storms are igniting, unusual lightning storms are igniting multiple fires all at the same time.

It's overwhelming all our ability to quench them early.

There can't be any more fires we have no more firefighters.

5 of the 10 largest wildfires in California history are burning.

7 of the 10 largest fires have occurred in the last 4 years.

It is completely not normal, said another.

This is the biggest wildfire outbreak in the United States since at least 1910, when the Great Fire, the big blow up, the big burn occurred.

So it's apocalyptic is what the newscasters are saying, which is of course a biblical term hearkening to the book of Revelation.

But what does the Bible say about fires at the end time?

For behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven and all the proud, yea all that do wickedly shall be stubble and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts, and it shall leave them neither root nor branch." Joel 2 And verse 30, I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke.

And if you looked at the news this last week or if you could see from a satellite right now, it looks like pillars of smoke.

And then in the New Testament, 2 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians chapter 1, verse 7-9, And to you who are troubled, Rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He shall come to be glorified in His saints and to be admired in all them that believe." Because of our testimony, Mungu was believed in that day.

And then in 2 Peter 3, verse 7-10, which will be our study at 11 o'clock, But the heavens and the earth which now are, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Verse 10, But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.

The earth also, and the works that are therein, shall be burned up, seeing then that these things shall be dissolved what manner persons I do to be in all holy conversation and godliness looking for and hastening unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat.

So the Bible indicates that the earth, at the end of time, will end in fire.

They'll be accelerating fires, and these will primarily be focused on the wicked to wake them up, ultimately, hopefully saving many of them.

And they will be brought upon by several things, ungodliness, as we read, and pride, and wickedness.

So, though there are scientific explanations, The science of salvation says this is the explanation.

Now, you notice 1 of those quotes that I read as I went through the newscast said this, that this fire season, they have never had a season like this since the great fire, the big blow up, the Big Burn of 1910.

Interestingly enough, Ellen White, who was living in 1910, penned these words in 1911.

Well, maybe in 1910, but they were published in the last edition of her book, The Great Controversy.

After quoting Matthew 24, 30 and 31, saying that the Lord is going to come again in 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 8, which we just read.

She said this, like Israel of old, the wicked destroy themselves.

By a life of sin, they have placed themselves so out of harmony with God, their natures have become so debased with evil that the manifestation of His glory is to them a consuming fire.

Further, she said this, as men depart further and further from God, Satan is permitted to have power over the children of disobedience.

As men depart further and further from God, Satan is what?

Permitted to have power over the children of disobedience.

Property and life are destroyed by fire and by flood.

You're not going to read about this scenario or this way of thinking about fires in the news.

You're not going to read about it, but I want to suggest to you that it's really what's happening.

In this age, a more than common contempt is shown to God.

Men have reached a point of insolence and disobedience, which shows that their cup of iniquity is almost full, and the Spirit of God is being withdrawn from the earth.

When the angel of mercy folds her wings and departs.

Satan will do the evil deeds he has long wished to do.

He loves it when people sign up for the military.

And he hopes there's many wars that you all die in the military.

Not saying you can't have good service and take care of other people but he loves death and destruction and he loves fires and he loves all these things and When the angel takes back the wings of mercy and departs, which is what happens when people are prideful and wicked, he's allowed in.

Thus he gathers in his harvest And so completely will men be deceived by him that they will declare that these calamities are a result of the desecration of the first day of the week.

From the pulpits of popular churches will be heard the statement that the world is being punished because Sunday is not honored as it should be.

When the cup of iniquity is almost full, almost full, you know it says the iniquity, the Amorites was not yet full, but when it became full they were destroyed.

When it is almost full, the Spirit of God is withdrawn from the earth.

Satan brings storms, tempests, Wars, bloodshed.

They will start to say that the cause of these calamities is that people are not resting on the first day of the week.

Could anyone ever say this kind of thing?

These are just statements from this last week in the news cycle of just this last week.

This pandemic has brought us to a crossroads, " said Pope Francis, and so did many news commentators, and so did many leaders.

Even our own governor said the same thing.

We need to get back to a new normal, quote unquote.

We need a vision capable of taking into account every aspect of the global crisis, said the website, the Echo Jesuit.

Because most of the people you see on the news are Jesuits talking about the environment.

And they have a website that when I read it this week I was stunned to hear the very lines I hear on the news.

If we all act together there's hope and change will take place.

It is a time, said the Pope, for restorative justice.

On the Echo Jesuit website, they had pictures of people protesting around the world, and they were saying that's a good thing because we need restorative justice.

We have not allowed the Lamb to observe her Sabbath and the earth is struggling to be renewed during this season of creation.

We ask you to grant us courage to observe a Sabbath for our planet.

And so began this September 1st up to October 3, the season of creation, a series of homilies shared across denominational borders in an ecumenical spirit, all calling for the same thing, restorative judgment, justice, and a call to observe the Sabbath.

We have not allowed the land to observe her Sabbath and the earth is struggling to be renewed.

In fact, the coronavirus on the website is God's response to people not following his will and his way.

During this season of creation, we ask you to grant us the courage to observe a Sabbath for our planet.

We are in the midst of a climate emergency.

It is therefore time to reconcile ourselves with creation through concrete repentance and urgent action.

As people of faith, we are called to stand up and against climate injustice in prophetic ways.
