Medical Evangelism in the Emergency Room

So I'm gonna be talking about medical evangelism in the emergency room.

How this happens, so my objectives show how we can do that in the emergency room or in a hospital setting because many of us, it's hard to do medical evangelism in a healthcare setting, especially in the ER, having people come in and not, you have maybe an hour with the patient and they're usually really sick.

Also identify simple treatments that you can send people home with, because a lot of the time, doctors will go, okay, specifically with COVID, go home, and when you get worse, come back, and then we'll treat you.

Like what the hospital or modern medicine has to offer at that point in time is your CPAP or intubation and some dexamethasone and your antibiotics and remdesivir.

So I will write on the back, and we're going to identify things that you can share with your patients, even if they're inpatient setting, what can you give them to go home with so that they don't have to come back to the hospital?

And then the last 1 is challenge you guys to seek a deeper walk with God because if we understand, if our relationship is close with Christ, then we are going to know who we can talk to and when we should talk to them, right?

Okay, outline, we're gonna skip over that.

I've been an ER nurse for 13 years, but my background, that's echoing.

I also grew up with natural remedies, home remedies in our home.

My parents used to tell me, okay, here's some garlic.

Here's a, actually, here's a spoonful of peanut butter and a clove of garlic, Chew it up.

I still to this day hate doing that, but I know that it works.

So I will wait until I'm really sick, and then I'll do it.

I can remember 5 times of when I went to the hospital, because my parents didn't take us to the hospital unless it's an absolute emergency.

1, I actually had a hole in my heart when I was little, and I remember probably about when I was 1, maybe it was 1 to 2 years old, I remember taking the stickers off my chest.

And that was my first realization of a hospital or anything medical.

Third time, third time I was in the hospital is I was running across our corral for our horses.

And I had told my brother, I bet you I can beat you.

He was riding the bike on the outside of the corral and I was running straight across.

Well, I forgot that we had hung up a, like a bailing twine between the water trough and a post.

Well, I ran into the milling twine and clotheslined myself, cut my throat open and hit my head on a rock when I fell, hit my head on a rock and I blacked out, I had a concussion.

And when I came to, I ran inside and said, mom, I think something's wrong.

Luckily, it wasn't deep enough to harm anything.

And So we went to the hospital for that and got it taken care of.

And the last time, oh no, fourth time I fell off my horse doing something my dad told me not to do.

Most of the things were that I got in trouble for were because, or still have lasting effects just because I disobeyed my dad.

But I broke my arm and I also got a concussion from that because I blacked out on that 1.

And it was a compression fracture and they had to reset it, reduce it and pull it down with weights.

And the last time I remember going to the hospital was when I was in a car accident.

And I decided to use my face as my airbag against the windshield and shattered the windshield.

So Not very many times in my first 15 years of life did I go to the hospital.

Otherwise it was hot and cold, hot foot baths, like garlic, whatever it was.

My parents were like, nope, not happening.

How did, oh, how did I get to where I am?

I was a CNA ER tech for 9 years before I finished nursing and I wanted to do something more before I at this point in time I wanted to do nursing but I wasn't there yet.

I wasn't in school and so I went and through by God's grace I met up with a former high school, I guess alumni that I had gone to school with and she said, hey, what do you do now?

And I told her I went to Sols West and I was a CNA.

She's like, hey, you know my mom, she's a birth center, they own a birth center, and she needs a birth assistant.

But the vision for what they want is they want a birth assistant that is going to have Bible work experience so that we can give these women resources.

And so they said, we want you to go to Weimar to have a health program, and when you're done with that, come back and you can be a birth assistant and put on programs for these women.

Got open the doors, paid for the tuition, sold stuff that I said if I need, if you want me to go then you need to get rid of this stuff, cars and etc.

And he did everything and I went to Weimar.

So then I finished that, went and did birth assisting at this facility and started my nursing journey and to become an ER nurse.

Unbeknownst to me, I knew I wanted to be an ER nurse, but it wasn't, I wanted, I didn't realize that I wanted more of the patient connection.

And you see people patched up in the ER, But you don't see that spiritual life changed.

And after 5 years, I've started to go, okay, God, how can I do this?

This is before they realized that it was a bacteria and that we could give antibiotics for this, okay?

So my mom did fomentations to me on my chest to keep my airway open.

We went to multiple hospitals, different doctors.

They actually thought that I was being abused because I was coughing so bad, all the blood vessels in my face had broken.

And so it looked like I had black and blue eyes, and just somebody was beating me up.

So they were gonna turn my parents into CPS.

So 1 last time, my mom's like, Let's try 1 more time.

So we went, and there was a doctor there from the 1940s when the pandemic of whooping cough came through, and he said – and my parents had finally gotten me to sleep – And he said, does it sound like this?

And my parents were like, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And he said, there's nothing we can do for it.

That's the only thing that's gonna keep her lungs open and see what happens.

I almost died from it, but she got me through it.

And it was only through hydrotherapy that this happened.

So, starting from when I was young, hydrotherapy was very relevant in my life.

And I knew that it worked on stuff like COVID, per se.

Then, fast forward to 2020, my dad gets COVID.

Now, if anybody understands COVID in here, You're more likely to die from COVID if you have comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, strokes, heart attacks, that kind of stuff.

My dad wasn't obese, but he has diabetes.

He had a history of multiple heart attacks.

He called me, no, my brother called me and said, Brit, you need to get over here.

What the World Needs…Now

Well, by show of hands, who here knows that we're in a pandemic?

Well, the pandemic I'm talking about has been going on long before COVID-19.

It'll happen long after, whenever that is.

We're still during this current pandemic.

And it's something that will escalate and worsen as we close the near end of times.

And that's the mental health crisis, not the COVID-19.

And today we're going to be talking about what the world needs now.

It's not a vaccine, and this is not a statement on vaccination.

What the world needs now is you, and you to work while it is day.

And so the question is, well, what does that look like?

For you in the different fields that you're in, in the different spheres of influence, the impact that you have, my hope is that you can gain practical tools for you to work while it is day.

So we're gonna have a word of prayer and then we'll jump right in, because I always have the problem I have a lot to cover and not a lot of time.

Dearest Heavenly Father God, we want to thank you so much for this opportunity to be here.

We thank you for the opportunity to learn from you of what we can do in the different spheres of our influence, God, and we pray that this is not just information, that this is not just another event, another conference, that we may leave here with a personal calling in our lives and our hearts of how you want to use us to be a blessing to others and how you also want to bless us.

So please be with us now, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

The first 1 is to discuss that mental health crisis, right, before and during, and then also kind of think about it from an end time perspective.

So again, what the world needs now, what are those needs?

Identify the challenges and barriers that get in the way of those needs.

Because sometimes we see needs, but there's something getting in the way of us actually fulfilling those needs.

Then demonstrate practical ways to address those needs.

And of course, to inspire all of you to be able to go forth and to work while it is day.

So we're gonna first cover the mental health crisis.

Now, I'm not gonna spend too much time on statistics.

The reason why is we don't have a lot of time and I just wanna highlight enough for you guys to get the understanding of how grave the mental health crisis is.

They say about 1 in 5 Americans, this is in 2019, suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder.

Now some people say it's 1 in 4, but the most solid data is 1 in 5 Americans.

Over the course of their lifetime, it would be 50%.

So think about in this room, 1 in 5, 50% over the course of their lifetime.

So you might start wondering, what would be the statistics now?

And then thinking about suicide for a moment, A lot of you are medical professionals.

And you start thinking about, okay, what are the diseases I work with?

We think about lung disease, liver disease.

But you notice that suicide is among the top 10 leading causes of death.

So you can see there in the bottom, top 10 across all ages.

But then I want you to take a look at this age group here.

The young age groups, we see 10 to 14, 15 to 24, and 25 to 34.

Second to unintentional injury, which is a very big category that lumps in a lot of things that they couldn't categorize in other categories.

So second leading cause of death, and this in 2019.

So again, what would the numbers be today?

Now thinking about, again, this is 2019, what would it be like in the future?

So this is the past 2 decades from 1999 to 2019.

And what we generally see is an upward trend.

Now, it doesn't look like a big increase, right?

But from those 2 decades, it's a 33% increase in 2 decades alone.

So you might wonder, well, what about with COVID-19?

So we see here, they don't have a complete analysis of the data of what the mental health conditions of our world is today.

But you can see a comparison from 2019 to 2021.

And just looking at anxiety and depressive symptoms, it goes from 11% to 41%.

Some believe that with the statistics for mental health during COVID, that there's kind of a...

It's not a good analysis of really what's to come, because when a natural disaster or another calamity happens, they have this thing what they call pulling together phenomenon, where people actually come together and you might see a decrease in mental health concerns because people are coming together, helping each other, right?

But then later on they expect there might be an even further decline.

So our country, our world, is at a place that's very concerning for the trajectory of mental health.

Now, that's a little bit of the statistics, but in a day in my office, I've been doing therapy for about 6 years now, and when COVID happened, I saw a dramatic shift.

And some of you might be in the mental health profession, or you might work with patients, and you may have seen this as well.

Now, I put here world versus church to just give you a couple examples.

People who have no particular faith background, many of you could have noticed, all of a sudden, the world is ending, right?

They had significant hopelessness, especially for those who had this idea that it's going to get better.

They were looking not only at COVID, but the presidency and the elections, the racism and the hate going on in our world, and they had this deep despair.

Now what would you expect from the church?

You would expect, oh, for them to not have mental health concerns, right?

I had a lot of individuals either call the office or message me on Facebook.

I have this hope, right, that Jesus is gonna come again, but I'm going to be condemned.

I don't know how many clients I've had who've either had a strong impression or actual whisper, you are lost, during this pandemic.

So they saw the crisis, they had the hope of a future, but for themselves personally, they were in great despair and almost to the extent of the hopelessness of the world because they themselves didn't believe that they would be saved.

So the mental health crisis is not just in the world, it's even in our church.

You think about in someone's individual life, you think about the impact on their relationships, you think about the impact on the church.

Now, does The Bible say anything about the mental health and the end times.

We think about pestilences and natural disasters and some of you can name specific verses in the Bible of the end time events and the signs.

But we often don't think about what about the quality of the people in the end times.

So if you have your Bibles, I want you to turn to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

Now, again, we think about natural disasters, we think about pestilences, but what about the end times?

Is there something that the Bible says about the quality of the people during the end times?

Yes, can you read verses 1, let's start with the first couple verses 1 to 3.

We often read these verses from a spiritual lens, but I want you to take a look at these verses from a mental health perspective.

Making Christ-like Connections: Win the Confidence and Trust of Your Patients

So how many of our patients are discouraged?

A large majority of you raised your hands.

How many of them might have a sore, sick heart?

How many of us are going through probably very similar experiences to our patients?

So 1 of the things that I want to bring out here is sympathy intact will prove, will often prove a greater benefit to the sick than will the most skillful treatment given in a cold, indifferent way.

The best medicine, so to speak, is sympathy and tact.

How we approach our patients, how we interact with our patients.

I don't know about you guys, but sometimes I find it difficult to know how to minister to some of my patients.

Sometimes those people are really hard to connect with.

The patients who come in and you make a connection immediately, maybe you have something in common.

But I would pose that those patients that are rude and the most challenging are the patients who are ready to hear the gospel the most.

I want to give you guys some very practical skills.

We're going to get into some nuts and bolts today, okay?

Literally very basic ABC skills of how to do these with patients, how to have this experience with patients.

I have spent some, I should now probably tell you a little bit more about what I do as a physical therapist.

I actually have spent a lot of time dealing with chronic pain.

Chronic pain is kind of my area of specialty, if you will.

And so dealing with patients with pain, I end up dealing with patients who tend to be a little bit more, unfortunately, they have a shorter fuse, they tend to be a little more rude.

Some of you in this room actually probably have chronic pain, and it probably interferes with your life to some degree.

So I'm coming at it from the standpoint of these types of patients, But I think all of you, whether you deal with chronic pain patients or not, or patients with chronic conditions, you'll be able to pick up some of these skills and things that we can do.

This is taken from a secular article based on clinicians who have really good outcomes with their patients.

The clinicians who tend to have really good outcomes with their patients are ones who actually demonstrate care.

And this is exactly what I believe Ellen White wrote many, many years ago in Ministry of Healing.

It's being proven today even in the secular literature, if you will.

Apparently, patients are less concerned with how much their physicians know than with how much they care.

So my question to you is, are you being intentional with all of your patients, or are we being intentional with all of our patients, to find the areas where we can demonstrate sympathy to them, where we can actually have this experience with them.

And this is what we're going to go through now.

I want to give you guys some practical ways to become intentional.

How many of you were here for Katie's presentation just before this?

OK, some of this might have some overlap.

I walked in, I was like, oh, I think your content is a little bit similar.

But I'm going to come at it from a very practical way.

We're going to discuss 4 guiding principles to patient interaction in interviewing.

We're going to highlight 3 different interview styles used in medical interviewing.

And then lastly, I'm going to provide some basic skills that you guys can walk away with and apply immediately.

And along the way, I'll hopefully demonstrate how I use these skills every day to have opportunities to pray with my patients, to provide an encouraging thought to my patients, or even sharing literature with my patients.

There is a rule that I believe is really helpful to follow when we're interacting with our patients.

We're going to go through these in detail in just a moment.

U, understand and explore your patient's thoughts and motivations.

And if you're wondering what I mean by empower the patient, I'll explain more later.

How many of you have had a medical appointment?

How many of you have ever sought counsel from a friend?

When you're looking for some advice or you're looking for help.

Have you guys ever had that experience when somebody, you try to explain your situation to someone and they immediately give you the solution to your problem, but they didn't listen to you at all?

I don't know if you're like me, but whenever that happens, I'm like, OK, yeah.

So the writing reflex is oftentimes when our patients walk in the door, the first thing we hear is all the things that they're doing wrong.

And we immediately want to correct it by telling them, well, you should just do this, and you should just do this, and you should just do this.

Believe it or not, Some of you may not do this intentionally, which is good, but believe it or not, it happens more often than we think.

So the writing reflex, in essence, is resisting the writing reflex, I should say, is allowing the patients to actually take the good lines.
