Zoom Backlash

Now this morning, I want us to turn in our Bibles to start with, and we'll pray in a moment, to Mark chapter 1.

Mark chapter 1 is where we'll read our first scripture.

And before we read Scripture, we will pray 1 more time.

Father, thank you so much for your kindness and for the sacrifice of Christ this morning.

And now as we read some of Scripture and think, think about how it impacts our lives, please help us.

Help us to understand it and apply it properly to our own lives.

Mark chapter 1 verse 41, this is the story of the leper.

Then Jesus moved with compassion, stretched out his hand, and touched him and said, I am willing, be cleansed.

Today we're going to look at a whole series of stories from the life of Jesus, but before we do that, before we do that, I want to share some some research and opinions from secular sources that I have found fascinating.

The title of our message this morning is Zoom Backlash.

You know, many secular sources have said recently how terrible Zoom is and how they're tired of video conferencing.

This year, this is from the Guardian, theguardian.com, British magazine.

This year proved once and for all, screens are no substitute for real life.

Zoom Birthdays, Zoom meetings, Zoom schooling, Zoom world is miserable.

Delays on phone or conferencing systems at 1.2 seconds make people perceive the responder as less friendly or focused.

Video chats, I'm now reading from 1 of these articles.

Video chats mean we need to work harder to process nonverbal cues like facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, and body language.

Paying more attention to these consumes a lot of energy.

Our minds are together when our bodies feel we are not.

That dissonance, which causes people to have conflicting feelings, is exhausting.

You cannot relax into the conversation naturally.

And this is also Stanford did a whole study on Zoom fatigue.

Silence creates a natural rhythm in a real life conversation.

However, when it happens on a video call, you become anxious about the technology.

Of course, we've all had that happen, right?

You know, the technology is, often betrays us.

It says when you're in a video conference, you know everybody's looking at you.

So, there comes the social pressure and feeling like you need to perform.

Being performative is nerve-wracking and more stressful.

It's also very hard for people not to look at their own face.

If you want to make direct eye contact with someone, it's actually not possible.

Because if you look right at their eyes, the camera is just above you.

So they're not perceiving that you're looking at them.

So you can look right at the camera, but then you're not looking at their eyes.

So you actually can't make any genuine eye contact.

Zoom fatigue stems from how we process information over video.

On a video, the only way to show we're paying attention is to look at the camera.

But in real life, how often do you stand within 3 feet of a colleague and stand at their face, at their face, stare at their face?

This is a PhD co-chair of the American Psychological Association and adjunct professor at Vanderbilt university.

When we interact with people face to face, we're not only listening to their voices and looking at their faces, we're picking up on social cues like hand movements, body movements and even a person's energy.

When you're in a conversation with someone, you can tell when they're ready to say something back, right?

Because they start to do something, right?

And then of course, there are the problems with technology.

Here's a tweet, another excellent Zoom call with my mom's forehead.

So, you know, we've all experienced that.

And then, of course, there's the wait, what was that?

And this is from the very secular and liberal magazine Slate.

On a video call, there's too much information about the self and not enough about others.

And finally, the world inside a computer will prove an inadequate scratcher of our most basic human needs.

I will not be attending your exhausting Zoom gathering.

Is in, working from home is a failed experiment.

The research actually is somewhat conflicting.

But the next slide is from Microsoft, actually.

And this is just some of their conclusions.

But they found that says leaders are out of touch with their employees, Gen Z is at risk, et cetera.

1 of their conclusions though, was that collaboration and innovation have plummeted because people aren't together.

So Zoom and video conferencing is limited in what it can do for, if you want to be productive in the sense of collaboration and innovation.

This is the chief wellness officer of Deloitte.

And she says, the pandemic has shown us how important face-to-face interactions are to our well-being.

In personal connection, both inside and outside the office, it is such a vital part of how we build and cultivate relationships personally and professionally.
