Ten Commandments of Marriage Part 1

Fresh manna fell to the ground as a gift from God while the Israelites were in the wilderness.

It was fresh from the ovens of heaven, baked by the master baker himself.

How many of you guys are cooking for Thanksgiving?

Are you guys, some of you are just very good at making reservations and ordering food, yes?

You know, traditionally, my family has known me as a non-cooker.

And the reason is because, well, most of the women in my life have been great cooks, and so I never saw the need to cook.

They were always lovingly cooking, and it's not that I didn't want to cook, it's that they wanted to cook.

But, you know, because of that reason, you get a bad rep that you can't cook.

But I want to proclaim in front of all the church here and anyone listening, I know how to cook.

But there is something that has to happen when I cook.

I mean, you give me the ingredients, and you give me step 12345, and I could make anything.

I remember the other day my wife was working and I bought some cornbread mix and I decided to make it.

It's right there on the actual back of the box how to make it.

You may put an egg or 2, you put some oil, you put some milk, soy milk or whatever milk you use, you mix it up, you put something on the pan, you pour it in and then you check it in.

And when I told my mother I was making that, she started really being worried about me.

She's like, are you sure you know what you're doing?

But that was nothing compared to my wife when she got home.

You know, the idea is like, oh, did someone stop by and drop off food?

I absolutely know how to cook, as long as you give me steps 1 through 10, right?

And really, any of you could cook if you have those steps and we use it for other things in life Like do you want to build the Lego set?

Here's steps 1 through 10 you buy something at Ikea to build here steps 1 through 10 and for most of us that works just fine, right?

We have the directions, we have steps 1 through 10, and we can absolutely do it.

Now, things get a little tricky when it comes to relationships.

Because relationships are not like cooking, or building a Lego set for your kids or even putting furniture together from Ikea.

10 steps to a happy marriage, 5 things to do if you want to revive your marriage, you know steps 1 through whatever.

But things are a little bit more complicated when it comes to people, right?

Things are a little bit more complicated.

And I thought, well, there'll never be steps 1 through 10 that will be able to help marriages.

Things are a little bit more deep and more complicated.

But I came to a different understanding recently when I took a class on marriage from 1 of my professors at Andrews and we started talking about the 10 commandments.

And really when it comes to the 10 commandments, it is really those 10 things that strengthen your relationship with God the Father and Jesus.

And Jesus is saying, if you want to have a successful, a loving, a great, exciting, deep, saving relationship with me.

And so the 10 commandments have been put there to have this wonderful, as we said, vertical relationship.

But listen, friends, if it's good for our relationship with God, maybe we could draw some principles from the 10 Commandments that also apply to our relationships with each other.

And so today I want to take that risk, even though it's not as easy as cooking or Legos or building furniture, we're going to take that risk and say 10 steps to a healthy or successful marriage.

It's not some marriage counseling book's 10 steps.

It is 10 steps from the 10, from the what?

And so, let's go into the 10 commandments of marriage, part 1, because we only get through 5 today.

Now, some of you might be thinking, I'm a kid.

Some of you might be thinking, I'm single.

Some of you might be thinking, I never want to get married or whatever it may be the case, but I want to remind you that you are part of a community of faith here.

And whether you will never get married, there are some people that will come to you for counsel or some people you need to give counsel about marriage.

And maybe you're not married now, but 1 day you will be married, and you don't get prepared once you say, I do.

And so, you never know what the future holds.

You never know if your missus or mister's right here in the audience right now.

And they might be looking to see if you're taking notes.

So go ahead, and if you have a paper and pencil, pull it out some notes here.

All right, So let's go to step number 1 or commandment number 1.

What does the Bible say commandment number 1 is?

So How can we apply that to the marriage relationship?

I'm gonna have a person give us a quote here and I'm gonna read out loud because it's a little small now that I look at it.

It says, no other human relationship should preempt the marriage relationship.

It must be primary, foundational, number 1.

The purity of this allegiance set each member free for loving, serving, caring, and respecting other healthy relationships which provide both pattern and energy.

So let's give an idea of why some marriages are struggling.

Let us imagine that there is a married couple, Mary and John, and they've been married for 18 years.

But over the years, they have started to drift apart because they got their priorities all wrong.

Their friends, their hobbies, even their families of origin come first.

And their marriage is on the rocks because it never has taken first priority.

Like so many couples, they thought that their marriage could just be put on autopilot, just smoothly run by itself.

But now they find that after all these years, They share very few interests together, and they have become almost strangers in their marriage because marriage has never been a priority.

And so, even though they are still legally married, they have drifted apart.

They never even share the practical little courtesies in life.

So commandment number 1 is that your marriage relationship should be your number 1 human relationship.

Ten Commandments of Marriage Part 2

How the Israelites must have anticipated the taste and the smell of each morning's delivery.

Today you'll be listening to Stephen Silva, former pastor of the East Lansing University and the Lansing Spanish Seventh-day Adventist churches.

You know that Sabbath like these are important for pastors because we see who the real saints are in the church, right?

You know, sanctification is a work of a lifetime, but I think it's accelerated in the winters of Michigan, Right?

Now, I want to thank you for making the effort to come to church today.

And they were telling me 4 to 8 inches of snow, and I said, no matter what, church is on.

If you're watching online, we thank you for those who are following us online in the warmth of their homes or cars or wherever they are, but we also have a great service here.

Well, today I want to do something that I left halfway finished.

A couple of months ago, we started a sermon series of 2, going through the 10 commandments of marriage.

And I left the end of the sermon saying, next time you hear my voice, we're going to be finishing up.

So before I leave, I want to keep my word not to leave you hanging on a cliff.

So if you're not married, that's okay, because these principles really apply to all relationships.

Also, if you're not married, you might be married 1 day.

And also It's important if you are past that age or you're beyond that to know that there are a lot of young people, other people who need instruction in relationships and in marriage.

So take it as something that everyone needs to know.

And today we want to finish the second part of the 10 Commandments of Marriage.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you so much because you created us to be in a relationship with you and then you also created in this world relationship between other persons And we're thankful that your plan was beautiful and perfect.

And we just want to honor you as we learn how to go back into that relationship.

Have you guys, when you were young, did you ever buy the Guinness Book of Records?

I used to look through and see what the world records were of different things.

Now, generally it falls into 2 major categories, the good records and the bad records, right?

And so the good records was things like people who have climbed the highest mountain or did the marathon in the shortest amount of time.

But then there's other records that are not so great, like the 1 who's eaten the most cockroaches or people who have not cut their nails in the longest amount of years.

It was a picture of a guy with his nail just curling around.

And so Guinness Book of Records has good records and then other records that are not so good.

1 of the records that still stands, it's a 12-year-old record, is from Alexandria native-born woman called Linda Lou Taylor.

And she has a record for 12 years of being married the most times.

How many times do you think she's been married?

She's been married 23 times, And she was listed in the Guinness Book World of Records as the most married woman in history.

She's 68 years old, and she has been in her lifetime a Scott.

She's been, these are last names, she's been a Scott, a Street, a Smith, a Moyer, a Mosse, a McMillan, a Braceford, a Chandler, and an Essex, and we can't name all 23, but she holds that Guinness Book of Records for most marriages.

Despite the failure of her 23 marriages and being single now for the last 12 years, she, Taylor, has mentioned that she has not ruled out on a future marriage.

She said, I would get married again because, you know, she said, it gets lonely.

Now, what's interesting is that her first marriage in 1957, she says to her first husband, George, was the nicest and the best marriage that she's had.

And I think about it and I say, what if she would have gotten it right the first time?

She would have made the book, you know, the Guinness World Book of Records, but I don't think that was a great accomplishment in her own mind either.

What if it would have gone good with the first person?

And Isn't that the goal and the plan when we get married?

It's not that we plan on it ending and doing another try and another try and another try.

We all go with good intentions, those who are married into marriage.

You tell the person that you love them, they tell you that they love you.

But many times the problem is that we don't know how to love each other.

Now, you could be said the same is for a relationship with God.

The Bible says that you shall love the Lord your God with all your hearts, all your mind, and all your soul.

And we go into that relationship when we say, Lord, I love you with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, But then we go in with good intentions and we don't quite know how to love God.

And so God in His mercy instructs us, if you love me, keep my commandments.

And then you have this list of 10 ways to express your love towards God.

And I just love this because it gives you direction.

It gives you something concrete instead of just good intentions and good emotions.

You know, I'm going to be moving in a couple of weeks now, and I had to get rid of everything in my house, and that was quite liberating, except for 1 thing that was not quite liberating.

I've been talking about this for the last 2 years, the playset that I bought my children in the backyard.

It was three-fourth finished, and I lost the instructions on how to build it.

And once I lost that, it became a dead project.

And every time I'd go in the backyard, I'd look at that and it'd feel like a failure.

Finally, I sold it and the man came to pick it up and he asked me for the instruction manual and I said, it's gone, it's lost.

And thankfully he took it because now it's not my problem anymore.

But there's a frustration in our marriage relationships when we have the good intentions.

We want to love the other person, but many times things go wrong because we feel like we just don't know what to do.

You don't get that instruction manual when you get married that says, here, this is exactly how you're supposed to do it.

But as we open up the Bible, we find that the principles that apply to our relationship with God also apply to our relationships with 1 another.

So we're gonna look at commandment number 5 through 10.

And obviously these are primarily written for our relationship with God and loving God by loving others.

But we also can see how they apply directly to the marriage relationship.

So we would begin with the first 1, which is found in Exodus chapter 20 and verse 13.

Well, yes, but we're going a little deeper than that.

Now, what is the application of the principle here in the marriage relationship?

I have a quote from an author that we're going to be seeing throughout this sermon that tells us a little bit of what it means not to murder or not to kill in the marriage relationship.

It says, 1 should not kill a spouse with neglect, cutting remarks, domination.

Many wives become non-persons engulfed by their husbands, and many husbands become hollow shells dry of self-worth by unappreciative, demeaning, and demanding wives." Can you kill a wife?

Can you kill a husband in the marriage relationship, even though they're still breathing, walking, talking, eating?

Yes, there is murder in marriage relationships, but the murder is 1 that happens through neglect cutting remarks and Domination let me read you just a little illustration Leo and Rachel have been married for 11 years Both come from families where to survive 1 needed a sharp tongue and a sharp wit.
