Solomon: Prophet, Preacher, or Pope?

So as you can see, our subject this morning is Solomon.

So we're going to take a look at that here.

So let's begin in Matthew chapter 1 verse 1.

If you've got your Bibles you're welcome to have that there.

I'll also be putting the texts on the screen for you here.

In Matthew chapter 1 verse 1 we read that it is the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

And What I'd like to note here is that it identifies, even though it goes on and it lists 42 different people in Christ's genealogy, it begins by drawing attention to 2, namely David and Abraham.

Let's begin with just a brief look here at what we can learn by him as being the son of Abraham.

In Genesis 1717, God makes a covenant with Abraham and he says, I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee." He goes on in verse 10 and says, this is my covenant, which you shall keep, you plural, between me and you and thy seed after thee.

Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

Now, circumcision in Scripture, yes, they were to have every son circumcised, but there's also a broader principle.

Deuteronomy 30, verse 6, makes very plain that that was merely an outward sign, that the true circumcision that God is interested in is this, the Lord thy God will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

And you notice there at the second half of that verse, does that not remind you of the first and greatest commandment?

He doesn't say that we circumcise our heart, he says he will circumcise it.

When you circumcise something, you take a knife, right?

And as he puts to death the old self, he says, that's the very thing that will allow me to come forth in you, to live in you.

And when I live in you, you will come to love me.

Notice how it said that it was true of, if I go back a screen here, that it won't just be of your heart Abraham or of all those that come from you, but says the heart of your seed.

And Paul talks about the seed being very specifically Christ.

In Psalm 40 verse 8, David is writing, but he's uttering the words of the Lord.

It says, I delight to do thy will, O my God, yea, thy law is within my what?

Yes, Jesus came to our world and thankfully the law was written on his heart.

So in other words, he knew what it was to be circumcised in heart.

And you can see that Paul does in Hebrews chapter 10 verses 5 through 7 take this very verse from Psalms and apply it to Jesus.

So we have there that Jesus truly was the seed of Abraham, a son of Abraham.

He experienced that covenant that God made with Abraham.

But now also, please notice back in Matthew 1 verse 1, it said not only was Jesus going to be the son of Abraham, and he traces his genealogy from Abraham forward, It said also that he was going to be the son of David.

Well, let's take a look here at David's story.

In 2 Samuel 7, verses 12 through 13, David is having, I guess you'd almost call it a conversation with the Lord.

You know, he was talking to the Lord as to a friend.

And he said, when thy days be fulfilled, and this is the Lord speaking to David that is, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever." So notice, again, it's thy seed.

There was the seed of Abraham and Christ came as 1 who had the law written on his heart.

But now, when talking to David, the Lord makes clear that I'm going to give you another perspective.

I'm going to set up the seed, and this is going to be in terms of a kingdom.

So we see that Jesus is both son of David and he is the son of Abraham.

And that's the gist, and that Matthew's gospel goes on from there.

What I'd like to do for the rest of our time together here is look a little bit more at this idea of the Son of David.

Now in scripture, sure, Jesus is the ultimate Son of David.

But also, if you think about it, who else would qualify as a son of David?

That would be probably the most obvious choice because when you look at the first generation following him, you'd say, well, that's his seed in 1 sense.

And of course, the most prominent of his sons would be Solomon.

So we're going to take a little look here at Solomon.

Notice here in 1 Chronicles 29, 22, this is what we read.

We're just sort of establishing the obvious here that indeed Solomon is referred to as the son of David.

Also there's a number of books of scripture that are authored by Solomon and notice what it says here.

The opening verse of Proverbs, it says, the Proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel.

What other books did Solomon write, by the way?

He also wrote 1 of the Psalms that is given credit to him, Psalm 127.

If you're ever having a hard time going to sleep, I always tell my children, Psalm 127, verse 2.

That's where he says, no, I'm drawing a blank.

But in Ecclesiastes 1.1, it says the words of the preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

So yes, indeed, Solomon is the son of David.

So let's take a look at some points along Solomon's life journey here and see what we can learn about this son of David here.

In 1 Kings 3.9 we have probably the first most memorable episode in Solomon's life here.

And this is where the Lord comes to him in the night.

And the Lord asks him, ask what you will.

And so Solomon, he says, give therefore thy servant, meaning me, an understanding heart to judge thy people that I may discern between good and bad, "'for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?' It's interesting too that he refers to himself in the preceding verses as a child and there are indeed some some folks who came to the throne as a child.

You can read about Some that came when they were 8 years old.

How old was Solomon when he came to the throne?

Okay, well, I guess you might say there was a period of co-regency, but when his father died, I guess that's what I'm after.

I don't know if many 30-year-olds would consider themselves children.

I look back and think, well, yeah, I was, I don't even know if I was a child, then I was a fool.

But nevertheless, he refers to himself as a child.

And that's a very humble attitude because he could have thought, well, boy, I'm, you know, I'm following the footsteps of David.

He was a mighty king and now I'm taking the throne.

He could very easily have thought himself, he could have become very proud.
