01 The Great Break Up: Business and Religion

I'm excited because I see a room full of present and future business owners, and entrepreneurs, and innovators, and this is where this stuff's going to happen.

I can tell, we've got some good people in here.

My name is Michelle Dukovis and this is Clinger Laurent.

This first session is going to be on the great breakup business and religion.

The next section, we're going to talk about the 7 principles for successful business, Go through quickly a whole bunch of stuff.

Try to get a good overview of some practical things.

Clinton is going to talk to us about Christ's method of marketing.

He has a lot of great experience to share in that field.

We're going to talk about pitching your startup, how to actually present your business, get funding and support for your business.

Then tomorrow morning, there'll be an opportunity for you all to share your business ideas.

If you have a business or you have a plan you've been working on for a business, I'm going to put this QR code up here on the screen.

Please do take a picture because we need some people to share their ideas.

Because you don't just want to hear us talk about this.

1 of the most inspiring parts of this seminar is getting to hear you guys talk about what you're doing.

I'd get tons of ideas from hearing other people.

So you can pitch your idea tomorrow or the business that you already have, and you'll even get some potential prize money.

We are giving out $500 tomorrow to someone and some free business coaching.

So yeah, a little incentive, a little, not huge, just a little bit.

But this will not be hugely formal, but we will give some more instructions about how to do that.

Well, why don't we start with a word of prayer, and we're going to dig right into this.

Father in heaven, thank you so much for the opportunity to be here together this morning.

You created us, You created our world, You created the universe, and You created us with the ability and the innate desire to create, to develop things that will improve our world and things that will spread the gospel so that You can come back, Lord.

And I just pray that as we talk about business and religion, how these things go together, how to do this successfully, that you would lead and guide, that you would be with myself and Clinger, give us your words.

And everyone who's here participating, that we can just have a great time growing and learning together.

I'm going to start this morning though by telling you a little bit about my own story, which involves business and involves ministry and it involves GYC.

So I studied accounting when I was in college at Southern Adventist University.

At that time in my life, I will admit I really didn't know what I wanted to do with my life.

I did business, I did accounting because it came easily to me.

I had worked in this since high school, it was not hard for me, it was interesting, so I did this but I really didn't know, God, what do you want me to do with my life?

And during this time, I got invited to go to GYC for the first time.

And I will be honest, I didn't know what GYC was.

And I didn't even know hardly anyone who was going and I showed up and thought, what am I doing here?

Who are these people and what is this thing?

But something really impacted me when I went to GYC for the first time And that was seeing a lot of other young people who just had a real passion for Christ and to share Christ.

And I don't think I'd been in an environment with that many people that were interested in mission this way.

And God really just spoke to my life at that time.

I count that as a turning point in really the direction of my life.

So after that, GYC, I remember starting a Bible study group in the dormitory at school.

So I just invited some friends, and we read the book of Matthew together.

Put little flyers in my hall, invited people.

We actually, a group of us that loved GYC, got together.

And we didn't think we were being entrepreneurial or whatever.

We just wanted other people to experience what we experienced.

And somehow out of this, I became the founding president of GYC Southeast.

I don't think we were trying to start a youth conference.

And I realized then, though, that God could use me to do things and start things that would actually make a difference.

And it really had nothing to do with how good I was at anything.

In fact, when we started GYC Southeast, the first time we called a meeting of this group of us, I actually like took a nap before and fell asleep and missed the first meeting.

And then they all went home and didn't meet.

And that's how I knew they thought I was the leader.

But God worked in a lot of different ways.

After college, I ended up leaving doing business for a while to go to mission school.

I went to Amazing Facts and did their College of Evangelism, did Bible work for a while, worked and taught at Souls West in Arizona, and my life kind of took this interesting turn.

And I wondered for a while, God, if you are calling me to do ministry, why did I study business?

Because for a while it seemed like those 2 things were separate.

Like, you know, either you follow God and you like work in ministry full time, Become a pastor, become a Bible worker, go overseas as a missionary, something like that.

Or you go serve the world and do business.

And I thought about how the disciples were called to lay down their nets and follow Jesus.

And there's definitely times in my life that I'll be honest, I wondered, God, is this what I'm supposed to do?

And are you just calling me to lay down this stuff from before in business to just follow you.

There are times that I did and there are times that you might.

But the interesting irony of how things went around in my story is that I realized that business kept following me and so did ministry but at the same time.

So for instance, I ended up getting an opportunity to go back to school and do my master's in business, my MBA.

And while I was doing this at Southern, I started having a burden that, you know, we don't really do a lot of evangelism training here.

I mean, I went to school here for 4 years and went to Adventist school my whole life and I had to leave and go to Amazing Facts on the other side of the country to learn how to share my faith and that seemed strange.

So in my little MBA classes, I started writing up business plans for an evangelism school.

Because they taught us enough to be dangerous.

How to map this out and do some feasibility analysis and all of this.

02 Break Forth and Innovate: The 7 P’s of Building a Successful Venture

Thank you so much, Michelle, for this awesome presentation, the introduction.

Right now, well, my name is Klinger, by the way, Klinger Laurent.

This is the second seminar entitled Break Forth and Innovate, the 7 principles of building a successful venture.

Before we start, let's have a word of prayer.

Father God, we thank you so much for this time, for the privilege of talking about this amazing subject, building businesses, ideas, trying to reach people for your kingdom using our skills and the talents you've given us.

Please, may your spirit be here and guide the thoughts and may this be a blessing and pay tenfolds afterwards.

Okay, well, Michelle spoke a little bit about herself.

I just briefly, you don't want to know much about me, boring story, but I just, yeah, I was born in Brazil and then let me go for my grand grand, no, I'm just kidding.

I actually been involved in family business almost, I mean, not all my life.

My mom was really a businesswoman ever since I was a little boy.

And then I was a canvasser for many, many, many years.

So when she mentioned anyone, what do you think about sales people?

And I've been a sales person for so many years.

And then I've been also involved in ministry as volunteer and then at some point full time and then took over my family business in Brazil then in Colombia as well and then now for the last 2 and a half years I've been really studying a lot about marketing And I've been doing marketing for a funeral business for the last couple of years.

And then it was a really interesting project.

You might be thinking, how do you do that?

I wasn't actually selling a funeral plan, which I actually thought a lot about that.

They do sell funeral plans, but I was actually building an online course for people who lost loved ones.

You know, we're going to a grieving process and we had the psychologist and I worked with her.

And basically what I'm gonna be sharing this afternoon about Christ's marketing strategy and online marketing pretty much, is that even if you learn these skills, but you don't have an expertise, you're not an expert in anything, you can partner with somebody like I did with this expert on grieving process and then we did the business together.

We created the product and it was a success.

So now, this 7 principles, I mean, we like to put, you know, 5 things you should know, 7 principles you should have, and, you know, 10 things, you know, for you to become this or that.

There's a lot of things you can learn actually to be successful and 1 of the things is never stop learning So that's for sure.

So I hope today you take some of these principles and apply but before if you haven't Scanned and if you want to share your ideas, you know at the pitch competition tomorrow.

So just make sure you just scan that real quick and then you'll signed up for that.

You can share your idea and that's going to be a lot of fun.

I see some people scanning and yeah, go through that and you're going to be fine.

Now, the fourth seminar, we're going to be talking about the pitch, how you pitch a business and we're going to be, you know, going through that in case you're kind of, you know, wondering how to do it And yeah, that's going to be cool.

Now, if you have not joined the community, now why should you join?

Because Hive can give you a lot of resources.

And then we're also going to launch at Hive Academy eventually.

And so you want to know when this is going to be ready.

So you can decide, oh, should I get in, should I not?

Another thing that Hive does is really cool.

You know, they're going to have the event at Southern this year, this next year.

So you can't miss that if you're into business and marketing and ideas and all of that.

So just join, put your name there and you're gonna receive really cool information.

Then, obviously, you want to have a model, because you can follow through.

And then let's put the bottom here discipline if you don't have discipline I mean, how far can you go with anything in your life?

You can't even finish You know doing the dishes because you get distracted Maybe you don't want to and then you leave it for tomorrow, for the next day.

Even Jesus, you know, he said, if you wanna follow me, you gotta deny yourself, pick up a cross.

Or even Paul says, he's comparing the Christian walk with a fighter or a runner.

You know, they fight and they strive to be the best.

How much, you know, to get a perishable crown, how much more we that are striving for unperishable in crown.

So, discipline, you know, we could say a lot about that, but it's very essential now Obviously you have to have a product or a service How can you?

Become you know have a business or model without a product or service We're gonna talk a little bit more about that.

Marketing, if you don't have a marketing strategy, how can you present your product in an effective way so people can know?

Obviously sales, marketing, if it's not to sell, what are you doing marketing for, right?

So a team, you have to have a good team that believe what you believe.

If you don't have good systems, you're going to get lost.

You don't know how much really coming in or your expenses.

Then you have the results and we're going to talk more about this.

So this is kind of like, you know, in a nutshell, the business model.

Ok, so let's talk about product and service.

I'm going to try to be brief and general because Michelle also gonna take over this lecture afterwards so it's just I don't want to take up her time you know so bear with me why do you want to sell your product why I say why How many of you have heard the book or have read the book, Start With Why?

It's a really great book, Start With Why.

And most people know what they do, what they do, and how they do it.

And many businesses, when they lose the why, because it usually starts with the passion.

Michelle was talking about the passion for something.

Now, if you don't know exactly why you're gonna do that, You can easily down the line become obsolete.

But now somebody in their company actually came up with a digital camera.

It was Kodak and they presented and they thought it was really cool, but they put it aside.

They didn't want to go through with the idea because that meant they're going to lose business on their films because they made a lot of money with films.

They lost the why and they become obsolete because other people...

If their why was we just want to make people record and have great images and eternalize the moment.

And if that was their why, they would do anything to fulfill that.

Another great example was the railroad track in the US.

They were the biggest enterprise here in this country, But they got caught up with the train business and they lost...

If their why was about transportation, getting people from place A to B, they would take over cars and airplanes too.

But they were caught, you know, just narrowed their idea for what they did and how they did it so have a why really and we do have why very as Christians as Seventh-day Adventists we do have a very important why, don't we?

03 Breaking In: Christ’s Method of Marketing

Thank you for this wonderful experience lots of great information That's been shared all over this conference May be a blessing to each 1 of us here Father may your spirit be with us here right now as we about to discuss some of the Methods that Jesus used while he was on earth that big marketer is actually used to this very day Maybe you understand the powerful the power of these things and how to put them to your glory, to use for your glory.

Be with those that are coming and May we do this for your honor and glory.

So I hope you had a great time, great lunch, great meal.

I understand the time may be a little bit late, but that's fine.

So, you know, for those like to watch, listen to them again, or if you want to, if your friend of yours missed and you want to tell them, Don't worry, you can listen to it again later on.

So I hope, I don't know, how many of you have been here for the first 2 seminars?

Well, Maybe I should ask how many, it's your first time, your first, okay, I got a few, okay, cool.

We've been talking about business and mission.

So we had an introduction done by Michelle.

Then we talked about 7 principles of how to build a successful business.

Now we're going to go into a little more detail on the marketing side because after looking into marketing and reading some books and watching some of the successful people out there, I've noticed something.

I've noticed and I've talked to other marketers that are Seventh-day Adventists and they connected the dots and they realize that Jesus was, The people that do great marketing today It's they actually almost mirror some of Jesus strategies and you're gonna see it.

It's so it's really amazing Now you can fake it.

Some people do try But I don't think it lasts really long because you know eventually the truth always come out right?

So let's let's get into it again I was if if you didn't have a chance to scan you you'll get a chance by the booth you can come by anytime So okay, what is Christ's method of marketing?

Now, before I go into that, and then I like to actually show, it might be a repetition, not too much for those who were here before, about what is really marketing.

And I've asked a question about the fundamentals, I'm going to ask again, but before, I'm going to say something I didn't say before about the bad marketing and the good marketing.

And what would a bad marketing look like?

How about you go into a place, a party or a bar, we don't go to bars, right?

But you look, you go there and you approach a girl.

Well, let's go for the girl, but you know, usually the guy approach the girl, but you could, nowadays, it's, I don't know, it can be either.

Then you come to her and you say, hey, my name is John.

I work in a business office, I have my own business and I have a nice house.

A lot of businesses are trying to do this, actually.

They say how good they are, you know, and how awesome they can solve your problem and you know they've done this and that and they have thousands of followers and hey buy my product.

The marriage would be like the final, you know, the buying process.

You know, you don't come to her and say, hey, how's it going?

Would you give me your phone number for the first time?

So, basically, there is a process that needs to take place, you know.

You know, that short 30 second or most 60 second.

But it's, Donald Miller talks about this a lot in his books on business and the 1, the story brand, that you have to have, you know, if somebody comes and asks you a question, hey, hi, what do you do?

He says, Well, you know how usually business have a hard time explaining what they do, I help them to have a clear message so they can help their clients better and sell more.

Let me just say this, and then it says, if he has a business, is he interested now to know more about it?

Yeah, if he has a business, well he helps people to have a clear message and sell more.

It's just a short thing, but he's right on it.

But anyway, it's just so you can know that a good marketing takes time, and we're going to see that into depth.

The fundamental principle of marketing is to do what?

Now, talking about Jesus' marketing, did Jesus get people's attention?

That was, you could definitely get people's attention with that.

And you know, as much as he wanted to hush people, you know, sometimes, don't tell anybody I did this.

They will be telling everybody, hey, you know, Jesus just healed me.

And then, man, a crowd will come to see him.

Now, 1 of the foundations, I had a slide previously, but I didn't put how to get those steps.

So you have a product and you have a service.
