The 7 Phases of Surrender

So the title of this message is the 7 phases of surrender.

Have you ever wanted something really really really bad?

I mean you were just fixated on this thing.

You know during your prayer time you say, Lord please be with this person, please be with that person, thank you for this.

And then when it comes to that topic you go, and oh Lord, oh God, would you please, please, please give me this thing.

And it's your most urgent prayer request.

You know, as soon as your head hits the pillow, you start fantasizing about it.

And you start thinking, oh, wouldn't it be wonderful if I could have this or get that.

And you get to the point where you feel like, you know, If I go throughout life and I never get this thing, or I never achieve this goal, you will have feel that your life had been wasted.

Have you ever really, really, really wanted something so bad you could taste it?

It could be a lot of different things and it tends to change throughout life.

Other people they want to become wealthy.

They just want to get to the point where they don't have to ever worry about money again.

Some people, it's to be respected and well-known.

Others, they just want to be married and happy.

Some, they want to be married but to a certain person.

And others, maybe it's not as important whoever they get married, but they want a lot of kids.

If I could just get that I would be happy.

Some people want to get their health back.

And that becomes the all-encompassing driver in life.

And many of us are perhaps there right now.

And typically what happens is we go from 1 of these great desires to the next 1.

For instance, as soon as we get that degree, you say, oh, I got the degree, wow.

And then you kind of come to, and you're like, you know, but I'm single.

And it would be really nice to be married.

And then maybe God provides you that person, and you get married, and you say, oh, I'm married, I have this great job, I have this marriage.

But then you say, but I've always wanted kids.

And then maybe you get the kids, but then you say, oh you know we got this big happy family, but boy we are financially strapped.

And you just go from 1 to the next to the next to the next.

Now let me ask you, is it inherently evil to have desires?

Is it wrong even to want to be financially stable?

None of those things are inherently wrong in of themselves.

The first thing is oftentimes they are developed out of a space of insecurity.

They're developed out of a space of insecurity.

Children who are raised very poor, guess what they wanna be when they grow up?

People who are raised feeling like they were a nobody, guess what they wanna be when they grow up?

People who are raised feeling like they were a nobody, guess what they want to be when they grow up?

People who are raised in a very unstable family environment, guess what kind of family they want when they grow up?

People who grow up feeling insecure because they feel like they're attractive, they don't feel very desirable, guess what they get fixated on in life?

They want to be attractive, they want a good looking spouse.

You know, I went through a bit of this in my early 20s.

You know, 1 of the things that I was naturally very gifted with was art.

I was very good at drawing from a very early age and it was just really clear that I was gifted in this area.

And at a certain point, I started toying with the idea of going to art school and actually pursuing this as a degree.

And I clearly remember as I would tell this to those beautiful people at church, the church I grew up at, I would share it with the older people.

I'd be like, yeah, I think I'm gonna go to art school.

And I remember they would say, oh, that's nice, but why don't you get a degree in business first?

And I'd be like, why would they say that?

And I'd be like, what are these comments coming from?

Whenever someone says, you know, oh, I'm an artist, what do you think this like person like, you know, eating a Hot Pocket in like a little cold studio, like starving, you know, like starving artist, right?

And so guess what started welling up in me?

Maybe I will go to art school, and I'm gonna make money.

And so 1 time I was walking around my junior college where I was attending and there was actually a booth that the Academy of Art University in San Francisco had a booth and I attended the booth and they're like yeah it's we have this art school, very successful people come out of it, there's lots of opportunities, they give free tours.

And so I did, I took a free tour of the school.

They showed examples of students in their first year of work and what they were producing at their fourth year of work.

I was like you guys could do that with me, with an artist.
