Small Scale Agriculture in the Home Sanitarium Setting

Let's open with a word of prayer, shall we?

Father in heaven, we are grateful for the time we have together with each other at this conference.

We just pray that you would give us clear minds, and as we talk together and learn from each other.

We pray that this will prove useful for the care of those who are sick and suffering and the furtherance of your kingdom.

Come on in, I appreciated we had a door manager last time.

We need to add that to the audio verse feature of each yeah we that opens up another chair alright press together press together we can get more people on the floor if we have to as long as we don't tell the fire marshal.

I am owner, operator, and dweller of the Doctors Inn in near Crossville, Tennessee.

It's a small home scale, smaller size home sanitarium.

You'll have copies of these slides via the website at the end.

Let me give you additional what I call information.

You can also hear on AudioVerse a presentation I did now 7 years ago at Amen on my take, my thoughts on home sanitariums, why I have 1 now, and how I got 1.

At that time I was not, as I am now, board certified in lifestyle medicine as well as anesthesiology.

So I make a living as an anesthesiologist.

I also spend some time building furniture, selling produce at the local farmer's market, things like that.

I took the show on the road when COVID hit.

I tried to treat some church members in their home because during the lockdown, you didn't have a lot of options, and you certainly shouldn't have gone to my hospital where I worked because you would have waited.

I had 1 church member wait 5 days to get in.

He died later after being treated there for some time.

So you need to think about how your lifestyle, and particularly here at our conference we're talking about food and growing good things, your diet will impact wellness as well as the course of illness.

So all of you here I presume are familiar with the 8 laws of health.

In lifestyle medicine we tend to tout what we call the pillars of lifestyle medicine.

That's what you're looking at on the board.

They're healthy eating, physical activity, the management of stress, the formation and maintenance of healthy relationships, sleep, and the avoidance of what we would say temperance, abstemiousness.

That's the cessation of tobacco section on the graphic that the American College of Lifestyle Medicine produced a bit ago.

And so that's kind of what I focus on at the Doctors' Inn.

But here, since you're foodies and you're farmers, I'm going to kind of tailor what I say to that audience and to those kind of points of interest or views.

Feel free to, when question and answer time comes, we can spread out a little bit if you want.

But I did my best to kind of anticipate who might be coming, what you would be interested in hearing, and then throw in or sprinkle in a couple things that I want you to hear that maybe you didn't think about.

Maybe 1 of those things I'll just get and take care of right off the point, right off the bat, is this.

There's plenty of people interested in doing 8 laws of health, natural remedy, home sanitarium, health evangelism stuff.

But as best as I can tell you, 85% of the results you're going to get in helping people come from the diet that you feed them.

So if you did nothing else, the majority of the benefits you're going to be able to share with people is going to come from what they stick in this hole here.

But if you're going to pick 1 thing to excel on, that would be the diet.

So the trouble I see is that we have some institutions that focus on lifestyle, and I love them all.

But 1 of the main problems we have is getting good, local-grown food to use for its nutrient value at these locations.

And so last year I talked with John Dysinger and suggested, you know, maybe we're going about this backwards.

Maybe what we ought to do, rather than trying to take the farmers on the road and transplant the farmers to a health institute, maybe we ought to take the medical team on the road and transplant them to the farm.

Because a lot of us already have our main gig that pays the bills, pays the property tax, because hopefully you own the place.

And then you can drive somewhere that has a couple of spare houses or that you build.

It's much easier, in my opinion, it's much easier to transplant medical expertise and go to a good functional farm than it is try to reproduce a farm efficiently, functionally, and sustainably at a health institute.

We might want to try to consider doing something like that Because I have tried now for some time to get my place to the performance that I want.

So as far as my philosophy for food at my doctor's inn, I stress locally grown.

It needs to be locally grown because that impacts the quality of it and the taste when they eat it.

And I think if it doesn't taste good, I'm not going to feed it to you.

If it doesn't have a low cost, the likelihood of someone else adopting it goes down.

If it's difficult to prepare, they're not going to do it when they leave.

And if it doesn't have significant therapeutic value for them, why am I doing it?

And so all those things add up to what I seek, which is the high probability of them using it.

I'm trying to change the way they live, not just the way they eat, though that's really, really helpful.

I change the way they sleep, change the way they move, change the way they relate to other people, how they manage their stress.

So Maybe also in passing I'll point out that I would encourage you to not adopt the standard philosophy of allopathic medicine, which is, if I just do this 1 thing, you know, we did a great presentation there, They fed people beta carotene.

Oh, that's the kind that makes everything.

Oh, you can smoke till your hearts contend you won't die from lung cancer.

And so it was neat how we disproved that that was an effective or appropriate approach to managing free radicals and oxidative stress, but people are very quick to bump back and forget that and say, oh, well, if I just have some light centipyrelle, that will fix my hypertension.

Did you not just see the study that you mocked all the food people and now you want to?

So please don't get fixated on a Norwalk juicer.

You know, you've got to have a Norwalk juicer, otherwise people are just not going to get the news.

It was so challenging to use, so time consuming.

I couldn't hire, I would have to hire somebody to use a Norwalk.

And so I accept something less than ideal, because it is ideal.

But I don't live and work in an ideal world.

Just with your intention, try to shoot for something ideal and do your best.

The goal is not to keep people from dying from cancer.

The goal is to make sure they don't die eternally.

All it's going to take is for you to be scared that a cancer patient is going to die in your home.

So then go to medical school and get an oncology specialty.

First Aid on the Farm

Every 1 of you are really important to our society.

You may be the link in the chain that saves your husband or your wife or your children or your neighbor or whoever, or helps them past a very difficult situation, medically or even psychologically.

And so we're gonna open with a prayer today.

Dear Heavenly Father, we're so grateful that you are the great physician, that you came down here and you bore our pain.

And we know that you're in pain as you see pain happen around us.

And now, Lord, As we take this class so that we can help relieve pain or be a link in the chain that helps to relieve someone's physical pain that could happen in an accident, just ask that you give us attentive minds, the ability to not only learn but to retain what we're learning, and that you'll help me to have very clear ways of being able to share.

If you were here for the doctor's farm this morning.

And I was an emergency room nurse for years.

ER nurse, ICU, CCU, I don't know how many of you know Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Any of you know the Salem Memorial Hospital out in Oregon, they see 4, 000 patients a month in their emergency room, I worked that ER.

And I can tell you I saw more than I ever care to see.

So, the key is, is that accidents happen.

Do not say out loud, but raise your hand if you've ever been in an accident or seen an accident.

I have really appreciated the sermons we have received every morning About the cycle of events and to be prepared for each 1 of them.

Well the first phase of being prepared is actually your time with God.

If you are not plugged in, you cannot hear his voice.

That does not mean he will not speak to you, and that does not mean if you don't have your quiet time, you won't hear his voice.

But I can tell you that if you have your quiet time, you will hear it much more rapidly.

You want to be plugged in because of ourselves, what does the Bible say?

So accidents that can happen on the farm, First rule, rule, if you're stuck, don't be afraid to ask God for help.

And all things whatsoever you ask in prayer, believing you shall receive, Matthew 21, 22.

My husband tells a very fascinating story from a man named Frank Fournier.

Emerson, could you tell it very quick about him being stuck?

Yeah, he was crossing the river in Africa.

The truck, everything, the truck, the bridge, the truck pushing, the truck pulling.

And finally after about an hour and a half, his friend said, well, maybe we should pray.

So when I was sitting at a table this morning at breakfast, and a dear friend of ours had their house burned down in a fire.

And they've just gotten a trailer house pulled up on their property.

And when they were coming out with their animals, the brakes went out in her car, vehicle.

She just screamed out, she said, God help me, there are no breaks.

And she said very shortly thereafter she was able to get stopped.

You guys, I know you just ate lunch, but you are good.

And when you are on the farm or wherever you are, When you look around, clean up things that can be accidents.

Right now, we have a very old log cabin, which was probably the very first log cabin on our farm.

When the old roof came off and went down like this, and the other day I was walking past and there was a piece of wood with a nail sticking up.

Don't have those things around your place.

We all end up with them at some point, but be intentional about cleaning up those accidents waiting to happen.

What is the deadliest machine on the farm?

I am a teacher at heart, so I have to have responses.

So the deadliest machine on the farm is the tractor.

44% of all farming accidents involve a tractor.

And I see a lady going back there like this, and she is absolutely correct.

What is the most common deadly farm accident?

An accident involving a tractor rollover.

What is another common deadly farm accident?

We live in a world of very impatient people.

And people do not like being behind slow moving vehicles.

So when people are behind slow moving vehicles, guess what?

They get very impatient and they will do everything they can to pass you or not judge correctly your speed going in that tractor and you would be shocked at how many tractors get hit with cars.

So if you have, I have seen a lot of red and green tractors on farms.

And if the most common deadly farm accident has to involve tractor rollovers, guess what?

Guess who's going to rollover with that tractor?
