Depression, Anxiety and Victory

All right, let's get started in our final session in 4 areas to fight and overcome through the power of Jesus.

And this last 1 is depression, anxiety, and victory.

And I mix that in because not only young people, but young people specifically are having massively high problems with mental health these days.

But adults are also, we've seen probably the highest rates of depression that we know of in history taking place right now.

And What are some things we can do to overcome?

Before we begin, let's bow our heads for a word of prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity to study.

May your Holy Spirit rain down, teach us in the name of Jesus.

This is, it was, they did kind of some, a poll recently and they found that 80% of people have been struggling with things like anxiety lately.

Like I said, we're already having some of the highest rates of depression.

Obviously the pandemic was difficult because there was, you know, maybe some financial struggles for many.

They were actually making more money during the pandemic as they were getting government funds.

That wasn't necessarily the biggest problem, but part of it was social interaction.

Social interaction is 1 of the most important things to make people happy.

And there was a fear to be around people for many, especially toward the beginning.

And some people to this very day are terrified, although much less so than in the last 2 years before that.

But I want to look at just a little bit of research quickly.

I'm not telling anybody what to do with this data, but I would like you to know you're often not told many of the side effects, at least you don't realize what they may be of certain drug medications.

Here's research on drug medications versus placebos for depression and their chances of you having future depression.

These are various different forms of depression medications like SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

You have monoamine, is it uptake inhibitors?

I forget, but nevertheless, you also have FLX, which is, what's the name of the very popular drug medication I should know?

If you're depressed and you take a placebo, Everything here is your chances of relapsing into depression later on.

And if you take placebo, you have the least likelihood of having future depression.

So placebo is the best method of not having future depression.

You go on to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and that will roughly double your chances of having depression in the future compared to placebo.

Same thing with SNRIs, TCI, I can't remember what that 1 is, that's probably roughly 3 times, you know, 2 to 3 times the rates of depression.

And then when you look at the MAOIs, you have maybe 4 or 5 times the greater likelihood of having depression in the future.

And so this is what we simply see is that depression medications enhance your likelihood of being depressed in the future.

They may make a difference initially, but they increase your rates of depression in the future.

Same thing with drug medication, or alcohol for that matter.

So if you use drugs to get over, you feel depressed and you drink some alcohol, it does make you feel better actually.

But it may make you more prone to be depressed in the future.

You take meth, you're gonna feel fantastic, right?

But you're gonna be more likely to be depressed in the future.

And so we see that even with drug medications that are prescribed for people.

Now I'm not telling, especially if you're on them, do not just jump off.

But This is just something that is very good to know.

Now I want to start with 1 of the most simple things that is like, okay, that can't be my problem, but it's good to know that let's look at water and happiness.

Individuals were surveyed and asked how many glasses of water they drank on a daily basis.

It turned out that those who drank a minimum of 6 glasses of water per day were over 3 times more likely to be very happy compared to those who drank less than 1 glass of water per day.

So you know you you might hear this like wow 6 glasses of water you're about 3 times more likely to be very happy than those who only drink 1 glass per day.

You might think, fantastic, I drink at least 6 cans of soda a day.

So, higher consumption of soda is associated with higher rates of depression.

So even though there's water in that can, there's also something else in that can, either sugar or, you know, synthetic sweeteners in there, but they actually have a negative impact on your mental health.

So the simplest first 1 and who is who number 1 when we get to heaven there's gonna be the river of Coca-Cola right no that's not what it says right There's going to be the river of the water of life.

We're gonna drink water in heaven and so we should learn to drink water here.

You should learn to like the things of heaven.

If we don't like anything that's gonna be in heaven, we're not gonna like it when we get there.

We have this false conception, this kind of like strange Christian idea that when we get to heaven I'm going to eat like you know donuts all day or something like that.

Does it say like we'll enjoy the donuts of heaven, right?

You know we're going to eat from the tree of donuts.

Now, right now, this is a time of year where people don't struggle with seasonal affective disorder as much.

About 6% of people in the winter months struggle with that.

We're far enough north here that some people probably struggle with that in the winter.

But the first line defense is simply light therapy.

Now if you can get out in the sun, that's the best thing you can do.

But if you can't, getting 1 of those therapeutic lights.

You can buy them on Amazon, probably 30 to 50 bucks, probably even 20 bucks these days.

And they have to have, if you would like 1, if you struggle in the winter, I would suggest that you get 1.

Even if you don't struggle with depression, it may give you, they also call them energy lights because they can give you more energy.

And they have to have 10, 000 lux, 10, 000 L-U-X.

You could just read your devotions in the morning, or you could eat your breakfast and have it sitting there for at least probably half an hour 45 minutes and that you in the winter even if you're not depressed you'll generally feel bad with 1 at better not bad you'll feel better with 1 application of this so it's worth a try you feel more energy less depressed and the Bible says I love this text Ecclesiastes chapter 11 verse 7 where it says truly the light is sweet and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.

And Fadi is going to come up now and she's going to talk.

I just want to say 1 more thing about the light.

What's really neat is that in the northern areas of the world, you know, this is more likely you're more likely going to have seasonal affective disorder, but if you get outside even during the winter, it's better for you than to stay inside and just look outside because it's a lot brighter out there than it is inside.

Even if it's gloomy looking, it's a lot brighter out there and just having that light to our eyes really helps us to feel better.

And we had a friend in Norway, we were there a few years ago, and she said that she lived way up north.

She had been living in the Oslo area, but then she moved way up north where it's in the Arctic Circle.

And she said that in the morning there was this blue light and if she got out in it she felt better.

So she'd go out for a walk in that blue light and it made her feel better.

So if you can't get that the the lights you know in in the house you can at least try to make an effort to get outside every day, regardless of what the weather feels like.

We lived in Iceland for a year, and we learned that truly the light is sweet.
