Charles Fitch

Come Out of Her My People

Come out of her, my people, by Charles Fitch, a lecture that he gave in 1843.

This sermon was printed in a Millerite periodical called The Second Advent of Christ, and it was published in Cleveland, Ohio, on Wednesday, July 26, 1843.

Charles Fitch was a Congregationalist pastor and at 1 time an executive assistant to the Evangelist Charles G.

Like Josiah Leach, another Millerite preacher, Fitch had read William Miller's printed lectures in 1838, but was very hesitant to do anything about them.

However, 3 years later, after extensive Bible study and an earnest desire to do God's will, Charles Fitch joined forces with the Millerite movement.

With the help of Apollos Hales, the famous Methodist, Fitch developed the 1843 chart used by most Millerite lecturers to show the many Bible prophecies that converged to 1843.

Just 8 days before the great disappointment, he died, having literally worn himself out.

Fitch had been a leader in giving the second angel's message of Revelation 14.8.

His sermon, Come out of her, my people, represents the beginning of that angel's message.

Revelation 18, verses 1-5, And after these things I saw another angel come down out of heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory.

And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and hold of every foul spirit, and cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

For all nations have drunk the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her.

And the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities." Then Revelation 18 verse 21, An almighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all." And then, Revelation 14, verses 6 through 20, And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and every kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come, and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation.

And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and the presence of the Lamb.

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever, And they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

And I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead, which die in the law from henceforth.

Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.

And upon the cloud 1 sat like unto the Son of Man, having on head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.

And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap, for the time is come for thee to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

And another angel came out of the altar which had power over fire, and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.

And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and 600 furlongs." 1.

What is it for God's people to come out of Babylon?

What will be the consequences for refusing to do it?

It is Antichrist, all those to whom Christ will say at his appearing, Those mine enemies, who would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

It is everything belonging to the wine of the earth, which, at the appearance of 1 like the Son of man on a white cloud, is to be reaped, and cast into the great wine-press of the wrath of God." What is Antichrist?

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God.

Because many false prophets are gone out into the world, hereby know ye the Spirit of God.

Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.

And this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come, and even now already is in the world." 2 John 7.

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.

This is a deceiver and an antichrist." It must be admitted that a spirit which is of God, while it confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, will readily assent and conform to all the objects for which he came.

To confess with the lips that Jesus Christ is come into flesh, and yet to be opposed in heart and life to the objects for which he came, is certainly to be antichrist.

The spirit, therefore, which is of God, while it confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, will cordially embrace and heartily enter into all the objects for which he was thus manifested.

When then was the end for which Jesus Christ was manifest in the flesh?

Luke 24, verse 45, Then openeth he their understandings, that they might understand the Scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it is behooved, Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem." This was 1 object of Christ's coming in the flesh.

And when Peter rebuked him for foretelling such things concerning himself, Christ turned and rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan!

For thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

Peter then was, at that time, Antichrist, in being opposed to the suffering of Christ in the flesh.

But did Jesus Christ come in the flesh for no purpose but to suffer?

Hear Peter on the day of Pentecost, after he had been baptized with the Holy Ghost, and fully qualified to set forth the objects of Christ's coming.

Men and Brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day.

Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne, he seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ." Here we are informed that God had sworn with an oath to David that he would raise up Christ in the flesh to sit on David's throne.

Christ was therefore to come in the flesh to reign on David's throne, and was raised up from the dead with flesh and bones, and that purpose, and in that same body ascended to heaven, and angels declared that he would so come again in like manner as he went into heaven." Acts 1, verse 11.

Now as his ascension is personal, his coming must be personal.

Isaiah had prophesied in his ninth chapter, verses 6 and 7, Unto us a child is born, Unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.

Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth even forever, the seal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." Again, Jeremiah 33 verse 15, quote, In those days and at that time will I cause the branch of righteousness to grow up into David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely.

And this is the name wherewith he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness.

For thus saith the Lord, David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel.

Thus saith the Lord, If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there shall not be day and night in their season, then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne." Luke 1, verses 30-33.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great, and he shall be called the Son of the Highest.

And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end." Now, as surely as the birth of Christ was personal and not spiritual, his life, his death, his resurrection, his ascension, personal, so surely his coming must be.

As he has taught in Luke 19, verse 12, he has now gone into a far country, to receive to himself a kingdom, and to return, and he shall so come again in like manner, as ye have seen him go into heaven.

In Psalm 89, verses 35 to 37, we read, Once have I sworn by my holiness, that I will not lie unto David.

His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

It shall be established forever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven." Then Jesus Christ has come in the flesh to sit on David's throne.

He is to sit upon it personally and forever.

For at the sounding of the seventh trumpet there shall be heard great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and His Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever." Revelation 11, verse 15.

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth." Psalm 72.

He said also, at the bar of Pilate, My kingdom is not of this world.

And for the reason that the earth, which now is, is kept in store reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men." 2 Peter 3, verse 7.

And as Christ's kingdom can have no end, God has promised a new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness.

And has said, As the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before me, so shall your seed and your name remain." Isaiah 66.22.

In the new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness, therefore, Christ will sit personally and eternally on David's throne, ruling the world in righteousness, and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Thus, as Paul said to the Hebrews, Christ for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of God." He also tells us that Christ is from henceforth, expecting until his enemies shall be made his footstool, the joy set before him, and for which he endured his sufferings on the cross, must be the joy of his eternal kingdom, when he shall reign in glory and blessedness with all his saints.

Christ then was manifested in the flesh, and was raised up, and is now immortalized, for the express purpose of coming again in like manner as he went up into heaven to reign eternally over the entire world on David's throne.

Hence it follows that whosoever is opposed to the personal reign of Jesus Christ over this world on David's throne is antichrist.

For though he may admit that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, He is opposed to the object for which he came, and therefore must be antichrist.
