God With Us

So good to see you all here this morning at Advent Hope.

I'm glad you're here and I hope you are too.

I'm a second year medical student here at Loma Linda, and it's a privilege to share with you from God's Word this morning.

Go ahead, while you're looking for them, I want to make a special plug for those of you that are considering going to GYC this year.

I'd like to see the hands of those that have never been to GYC.

There are, you can put them down, there are fewer of you than there were last year, which I am very grateful for.

A lot of your friends have been getting a blessing, haven't you?

It's, GYC stands for Generation of Youth for Christ and it's an annual convention of Christian young people, especially Adventist people, that want to come closer to the Lord, become more like Him, get ready for his return.

It's a real spiritual blessing and you should be there.

In the Old Testament, God instructed his people to regularly come to appointed feasts.

You read throughout the books of Moses and they said, you need to go to the Feast of Tabernacles and there's a Day of Atonement and there's all these special times that God set apart for his people to remind them of how important their relationship with Him was and to give them time to pull back from the cares of this world, from agricultural society, from the work of daily life, to spend time with Him.

Are those principles still relevant to our lives?

So just like we have those festivals that were in the Old Testament that were fulfilled by Christ's death and that modeled the plan of salvation, God has also given us times today, special events like GYC, like GYC Southwest, and other ones where we can come apart and spend time with him.

And he's appointed a blessing for those times, and you miss it out if you're not there.

Audioverse is good, and if you can't go, then you should listen.

But there's a blessing in being there that is not available even on AudioVerse.

And you will make friends that will encourage you in your Christian walk.

Just as an illustration, I made a friend this summer while I was working at Weimar.

He's a non-denominational member right now.

But he was so blessed by his time at Weimar that when he heard about all the other students that were going to GYC, he said, I've got to go.

We have a group, me and other people, about 11 of us are going.

It's cheaper if you do it before the discount runs out.

We're getting lots of people into the hotel rooms so that we will be inexpensive.

And he's bringing 2 friends of his, probably from his non-denominational church, even though he's never been to GYC and they've never been.

I understand that there are, and rarely there are, extenuated circumstances.

So let's pray and ask God for his spirit to guide us as we study his word.

It's important that we not try to go it just by ourselves or we'll be likely to lead ourselves astray.

Lord God, we want to thank you for your love and your mercy for us, for the privilege of knowing you, and for being a merciful and forgiving and kind God.

We want to thank you for your love towards us, and we pray that your spirit will guide us as we study your word together.

Speak through me and speak to my friends' hearts.

Give us understanding and give us courage and strength to live by the principles that are in your Word.

So I wanted to share with you an interesting story that I think illustrates this part of scripture very well.

And it is a story of 1 of the most famous rescues in history.

There was a ship that left Great Britain in 1914 called the Endurance.

This was just right after World War I had started, but Winston Churchill said, yes, you can go.

And they went, they were headed to explore the continent of Antarctica.

This was the attempt was to be the first people to cross Antarctica from side to side through the South Pole.

People had already reached the South Pole at this time, but someone said, well, I want to go all the way across.

And so That was something they hadn't been done yet.

The Endurance and their crew were going to do just this.

They have to travel all the way around the world.

Their last stop is the island of South Georgia, which is, it's, how do you say, it's southeast of Argentina, southern Argentina.

And they were trying to make this Trans-Antarctic Crossing.

Are you, anyone heard of this story so far?

Very famous, but it's a great illustration of a principle from God's word that I want you to see.

So they leave South Georgia and they're headed down to their destination on the continent.

And as they get closer, they notice there is way too much ice here.

You're not supposed to have ice at this time of year.

Remember that in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed.

And so when you're getting into November that's summertime and when you're getting into May and June that's winter and so it's backwards.

So they were getting down towards the end of the year and it was getting too much ice.

Unfortunately, they realized it too late and the boats trapped in the ice and they had to spend the winter on this boat.

When they tried to get off of the boat several months later, they realized that they wouldn't be able to ride the boat back to South Georgia because the ice was pressuring it so much that it was breaking in.

Water started to pour in and they got off just before it sunk.

So now you have these men of the endurance.

They thought they were going to go to the South Pole, but they're not even on land yet.

The middle of the ice flows, and it's cold in Antarctica.

Even in the summer months, it's not pleasant.

And so they were trying to figure out, Well, what do we do?

So after several different tries at various things, they finally make their way to Elephant Island.
