Salvation 101

We're starting a new series, righteousness by faith to kick off the new year and we're gonna Dive deep into this topic and by god's grace also make it relevant to a lot of what is going on in the world today our scripture reading as was read so wonderfully earlier comes from titus chapter 3 We're going to read verses 3 through 5.

The Bible says, For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating 1 another.

But after that, the kindness and love of God our Savior toward men appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

Our message today is entitled, Righteousness by Faith.

And this first installment is Salvation 101.

Father God, we thank you for this opportunity, Lord, to study a word.

We thank you, Lord, for your goodness and for your grace.

And now, Lord, once again, I ask that you just make me a nail on the wall And father god upon that nail you hang a portrait of jesus christ Let eric wall should not be seen or heard today father.

We need to hear a word from the throne room of grace Is our prayer in jesus's name?

So if you have your Bible Go to the book of Acts the 16th chapter and we're gonna go through a story that really deals with Salvation in a nutshell.

There's a lot to unpack So we'll move quickly through the first part of the story, but I do want you to get the context of this story It's 1 of my favorite stories So I wish I had more time on the story but we have to get to some other stuff act 16 and verse 16 says this and It came to pass as we went to prayer a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her master's much gain by soothsaying." So there was a young lady who had the ability, it seemed, to predict the future.

There were men who controlled this girl and made money off of the fact that people would come and ask her for a fortune-telling reading.

So nowadays you can go places and they have tarot cards and all this kind of stuff.

Most of the time it's really just a scam But as Christians, we're wise and know not to play with that stuff.

Somebody ought to say amen You don't need to worry about your horoscope and all this kind of stuff There aren't 12 types of people in the whole world, you know, oh you a Virgo you're just like me They could be 2 totally different people all of a sudden They found out their birthdays are similar and they the same person, right?

But this young lady made them a lot of money Verse 17 the Bible says that the same followed Paul in us as Luke speaking here and cried saying these men are the servants of the Most High God Which show unto us the way of salvation So she kept she began to follow Paul around and shout this out and spoke the truth, right?

These men are the servants of the most high God.

They show us the way of salvation Literally, that was the truth but look what happens verse 18 and This did she many days but Paul being grieved turned and said to the spirit I Command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her And when her master saw look at how this thing get changed turn turns here when her master saw That the hope of their gains was gone They caught paul and sylis and drew them into the marketplace unto the ruler.

So when these guys realize wait a minute They cast out the demon the girl can't help us anymore.

Well, it's not that she really can predict the future.

Somebody ought to say amen But the devil can influence the future So the devil can tell you something's gonna happen and then work to make it happen.

So it seems he predicted the future Right.

So when the demon went out these guys were upset they grabbed Paul and Silas drew them into the marketplace verse 20 says and Brought them to the magistrate saying these men being Jews do exceedingly trouble our city and teach Customs Which are not lawful for us to receive neither to observe being Romans they didn't realize that this time that Paul was also a Roman and the multitude rose up together against them and the Magistrates ripped their clothes off rent their clothes off and commanded to beat them Paul was preaching the gospel and as he's preaching the gospel and setting people free, they grab him before casting the demon out of this girl who was being abused and used by these men.

They're so angry and when the spirit of the enemy is aroused like this.

They take him into the center of the place.

And here you have Paul being beaten in front of a crowd and by a crowd.

And when they had laid many stripes upon them They cast them into prison charging the jailer to keep them safely.

It was the jailer's job that they not escape who having Received such a charge Thrust them into the inner prison and made their feet fast in the stocks And so what he did was he took them and there was an inner room in the prison So it was like high security because the break out of that room you'd only break into somebody else's cell Are you getting this right?

So the root there was a room inside all of the other cells and so that's where they put them and they put them in stocks so that they were their hands and feet were locked in and It will didn't have handcuffs like we have today So that big wooden stocks and they put them in the stock so they couldn't move Now most of us If this was our lot We wouldn't be very happy would we?

In fact, a lot of us would be in there complaining Lord.

Why you have me up in this prison like this?

No, this ain't even right I was just preaching the gospel like you told me to do And now I'm up here locked up in prison and the prison was smelly.

They don't clean they didn't have sanitation.

No sinks Can you imagine what that room smell like?

Can you imagine the vermin that was in that room?

And here he is trapped, Paul, for preaching the gospel.

And at midnight, Paul and Silas did what?

They prayed and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them.

They were in there and in the stench, in the darkness, without a breeze.

What if in 2024, no matter how bad the situation gets, we make a decision that we are going to praise God?

How different will our life be this year if when trial and tragedy comes, when difficulty falls upon us, rather than retreating into murmuring and complaint, what if we charge forward praising God?

Because what's powerful is it isn't just that Paul and Silas prayed and sang It's that the other prisoners heard them and spirit of prophecy tells us that the other prisoners had never heard any word Positive or song Come out of that cell And when god is praised church things happen Verse 26 says and suddenly there was a great earthquake so that the foundations so that the foundations of the prison were shaken the whole prison.

The jail starts to rock starts to shake and immediately all the doors swung open bam and everyone's bands were loose.

It's not just that the building shook because somebody had to unlock the doors.

Somebody had to lose all of the all of the shackles.

Somebody had to let them free when when the prison shook.

It was because a spirit of liberty had entered that prison.

Here's where the key antagonist in the story comes up.

The jailer who they had given charge to in verse 27.

The keeper of the prison, awaking out of his sleep and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

The jailer who was given charge over them wakes up, rubs his eyes, he walks out, every door is open, all of the shackles and stocks are open and empty, and he realizes everyone can run free.

And the penalty for someone given charge over prisoners like that for letting them go free is death.

So rather than succumb to the indignity of a public trial or a mock trial and a torture and the public death, He just grabs his sword and he's ready to fall on it We tell you something this year church This is the year that you ought to keep your sword for fighting the devil Don't turn your sword on yourself Sword is the Word of God He draws his sword.

He was worried that everyone had left and verse 28 says this But Paul cried with a loud voice saying do thyself No harm For we are all here.

Here's what's deep about that It was just Paul and Silas.

It was just 2 of them and yet Paul is speaking for all of the prisoners See I mean what Paul speaks he speaks for everyone.

He said listen, we're all here In fact, I can imagine some of the prisoners are probably still in shock The whole place starts shaking everything falls off they probably whoa, I'm not sure I want to run just yet like I'm not sure what's going on.

Verse 29, then he called for a light, this is the jailer now, sprang in and came trembling and fell down before Paul and Silas.

The man who had made sure that they were locked up, who probably added a few licks to them, who told them that they would never get what they want, who probably told them how little food they would get, the man who probably only added to their cruelty, now he comes trembling and shaking.

He falls down before Paul and Silas and asks the key question for our sermon today And he brought them out and said sirs What must I do To be saved Notice now they're not prisoners.

They're sirs There's respect on them because Paul could have let them die.

In fact, I hate to say it but some of us Like that scorpion story You know, you'd have been like look that brother wasn't good to us.

Let's just get out of here But like the story The nature of the Christian the scorpion story.

I have to admit that would never stuck 1 finger in the water there I'd have stuck a stick in or something Maybe but that's about it But our nature must be to love even those who would sting us It is the most difficult aspect of being a Christian at the at GYC and in Portland my subject was on on social justice and I did the seminars on social justice.

And 1 of the points I had to make is, being African American, if you do not learn that no matter how someone treats you, you love them like Christ does, you cannot be a Christian.

No matter how much prejudice, no matter how much difficulty you face, it is your duty as a Christian to love even your enemies.

So that question is a powerful question What must I do to be saved?

That's why this message is called salvation 101 we're gonna go to basics because there are a lot of folk come to church and don't really understand what it means to be saved As we go through righteousness by faith, We're gonna deal with all of that.

So first the first question I want to answer is what is salvation?

So Tariya It means to be rescued and delivered at the broader Greek definition includes restoration to a state of safety soundness health and well-being as well as preservation from danger of destruction.

So when this man asked, what must I do to be saved?

He said, listen, what do I need to be restored to safety?

What do I need to be rescued from my current condition?

He realizes in a moment, the jailer, that he is on a one-way course to death.

And when he sees the kindness of Paul and Silas, he sees Christ in them, he quickly realizes, I am in trouble, what do I need to be rescued?

Paul and Silas weren't the ones who needed rescuing.

They were in the prison more free than the prison jail leader.

Righteousness by Faith: The Quest for Righteousness

Every it seems as if every every week is only in more and more chaos and more and more problems and So it is good to know that God is in control And I can't wait for that day.

That day is the day when finally we will be reunited with the loved ones we've lost.

And so on that day, that trial and difficulty will evaporate for good.

And like the song says, the things that make us tremble now, when we reflect on them then, they will only bring a smile.

This week if you if you've been watching what's going on in the world you've seen that there's some really terrible things happening and 1 of the things I saw was in Ecuador a country I visited and did missionary work in a peak 1 of the most peaceful countries I've ever visited Was Ecuador we went from Quito all the way down to the coast and felt More safe there than anywhere and the president.

I don't know if you guys see you saw this but armed gangs gang members stormed the national television station and Laid the journalists down the police were able to take over and take back control But the president Then announces that they have an internal conflict What that means basically is that the country has a war inside of itself A lot of people were amazed that this is happening in Ecuador, but they don't realize this is happening all across the world their countries were literally we think about war as country against country, but gang warfare is going on and The rise in violence around the world is frightening if you are following what's happening in prophecy you know when Jesus says as it wasn't the days of Noah the particular sin of the days of Noah was violence.

And we are watching this in Haiti, in Jamaica, in much of Central South America, there's a fear around violence.

The United States actually struck targets along with the United Kingdom, the British, in Yemen this week.

So we're living in a time where the war in the Middle East seems now to already be slightly enlarging and expanding there are those that I think want to draw the West into a war and We as Christians you can look at it and it might make you tremble But the song gives us courage 1 day we'll look back at these signs of the times, these things that make the world to worry, that cause CNN and Fox News and MSNBC to to ring the alarms and we will realize that this was God giving us ample warning that he is soon to return.

So we're going to continue in our series today.

We're going to Go to our scripture reading Galatians 5 4 and 5 says Christ is become of no effect unto you Whosoever of you are justified by the law you are fallen from grace For We through the spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith Our message This sabbath is the second in our series on righteousness by faith.

It is entitled the quest for righteousness The quest for righteousness.

We thank you for this opportunity to study a word And once again lord, I just ask that you make me a nail on the wall and hang a portrait of jesus christ on that nail I Do not need to be seen or heard today.

This message is truly a message that must come from the throne room of grace.

Send your Holy Spirit now, Lord, and Lord, bind the devil in this place.

Cast him far away, he and his minions, Lord.

Some of us have been focused on weird things all week and otherly things all week Lord now settle us that we might receive your word For Lord, this is the word of life It's our prayer in Jesus is precious and Holy Name.

Amen So we're gonna continue on the series on righteousness by faith and it's funny You know if you if you when you preach on the Sunday law everybody tunes in You preach on the beasts of Revelation and Daniel everyone tunes in but I want to submit to you that none of that means anything if you don't understand righteousness by faith None of that means anything if you don't understand how salvation actually works and what you need to do You can be all up and down on what the Pope is doing And if you don't understand righteousness by faith, you'll be swimming next to him in the lake of fire So we're gonna go to the book of Genesis The 22nd chapter and we're gonna go to Genesis chapter 22.

We're starting verse 1 1 of my favorite Bible stories And this 1 is the story of Abraham and Isaac I Genesis 22 verse 1 says and it came to pass after these things that God did tempt Abraham And said unto him Abraham and he said behold Here I am God spoke to Abraham like this.

We're gonna see the God and Abraham were actually quite close and Here it says that God tempted Abraham But if you go to the New Testament James says God doesn't tempt anybody Well, you got to go back to the Hebrew.

The word here is better translated tested God tested Abraham And that's what this story is about, Abraham being tested.

Verse 2, and he said, "'Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, "'and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon 1 of the mountains, which I will tell thee of." And so here it is.

Abraham, as you will remember, has waited almost 50 years for the promised son to arrive.

He has messed up so many times in the interim.

In fact, his wife did not trust God, Sarah, and so she actually told Abraham to marry her handmaid.

Some people think he just had a child with Hagar.

He married Hagar, and he had a son named Ishmael.

In fact, the struggle you see in the Middle East to this day is a struggle born out of Abraham's sin.

It is the division created between Hagar and Sarah, between Ishmael and Isaac that lives on to this very day.

So he messed up because they didn't trust God.

Abraham is 100 years old, when they finally have Isaac.

I mean, In modern terms, they would be great-grandparents, at least.

And can you imagine Sarah giving birth to a child, the shock that went through the camp and around to the people when they lifted Isaac up after a 90-something-year-old woman gave birth, and you could hear Isaac scream?

Now the story is that God is saying I Need to test you and I need to test you on the point of your child I watch this verse 3 and Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his ass and took 2 of his young men with him and Isaac his son and Claimed the wood for the burnt offering when he cut it down and took it and rose up and went into the place which God Had told him so He saddles his donkey.

He gets the wood and he begins to walk on the third day The Bible says in verse 4 Abraham lifted up his eyes took him 2 days to get there and saw the place of far off the spirit of prophecy tells us that Abraham Had sleepless nights on this journey yet He still woke up early to continue and do what God said verse 5 and Abraham said unto his young men Abide ye here with the ass and the lad will go yonder and worship and I and the lad will go yonder and worship and come again to you.

He knew what God was asking, and he did not want his servants to see it.

So Abraham tells them to stay behind, and he takes his son, and he keeps going.

Verse 6, and Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac, his son.

And he took the fire in his hand and a knife, and they both, and they went both of them together.

He is obeying God and the child he's been pleading for is now old enough to walk with him and carry things.

And as Abraham is walking up Mount Moriah, as he's looking to the destination, he's left his servants behind, everything he needs for a sacrifice is in his hands.

And all he has to sacrifice is the son God promised him.

It didn't take long for Isaac to figure this out He's walking I say wait a minute we missing something Isaac spake unto Abraham his father and said my father and he said here am I?

My son and he said behold the fire and the wood But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

Isaac said wait a minute We got everything we need but we going up into the mountainside and and we didn't take a lamb out of our flock.

1 without spot or blemish like we're supposed to.

It seems like this is an incomplete journey.

How are we going to sacrifice and we have nothing to sacrifice?

Now, you have to understand, Isaac was, at this age, strong enough and quick enough that he probably could have Dropped everything and took off running and his hundred plus year old father would I had a hard time keeping up?

This story is not simply about the faith of abraham.

It is about the faith of isaac And here is the gospel given in verse 8 in a way that ought to excite you in genesis 22 in verse 8 the bible says this and abraham said my son God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.

Here, Abraham doesn't even realize what he's fully saying maybe he understands that he's going to trust God that when he gets to the top of the mountain that God is gonna do what needs to Be done that if he has to sacrifice Isaac, he will sacrifice Isaac in fact the Spirit of Prophecy says that Abraham thought in his mind and actually could read this in the New Testament that even if he did sacrifice Isaac God could raise him from the dead.

This is not the faith Abraham had when he took Hagar.

Abraham had grown, his character had developed, he was a different person now.

He trusted God implicitly so much so that even his most precious possession his child of promise Abraham was ready to take him to the mountaintop to be sacrificed Now when I was in Israel studying Jewish history, I remember this story coming up and 1 of the things my Jewish professor says is that Abraham was testing God I don't believe that but many of the other people groups around did practice child sacrifice And so this was not as crazy a story as it might seem.

It was crazy to Abraham because Abraham did not see God that way and he knew that his son had been promised and so he says here, my son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.

If you take that phrase, I heard a preacher do this years ago, and you move that phrase backwards, you can say, my son, God will provide himself a lamb.

Who is the lamb slain from the foundation of the world?

You can take it back 1 more word and it says, God will provide.

This church is righteousness by faith in a statement of a father taking his son up Not knowing what's going to happen and and the message for the parent is this you must be willing to give your child over to God because God will provide.

And they came to the place which God had told him of and Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son.

Can you imagine what this exchange must have been like?

Can you imagine what it would have been like for Isaac to stay there and let his father wrap him in rope?

Can you imagine what it would have been like for his father to lift him tenderly and place him on top of the altar bound in rope as if he was a lamb to be slaughtered.

The Bible says he laid him on the altar upon the wood and of course what would happen if it was an animal is that the next verse would come to fruition.

It says, and Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

And if it was a lamb, the knife would come down, the fire would be set, and a sacrifice would be made.

And here you have Abraham, who once was so faithless that he lied about his relationship with Sarah more than once.

So faithless at 1 point that Abraham took Hagar and created all the problem and division that it created.

The knife is held up and he's ready to plunge the knife into his only child And when I say only child is only child of promise This is partly why Abraham is called the father of the faithful Abraham is where we say father Abraham how many sons remember song we used to sing how many sons has father Abraham I am 1 of them And so are you so let's just praise the Lord Because when we are in faith, it is Abraham's faith that we look to So what is the definition of faith Hebrews 11 says this now faith 11 and 1 says now faith is the substance of things what?

Hopes for the evidence of things not seen in fact The Bible says what sense does it make to hope for something that you have?

There's no reason to hope for that You have to hope for what you don't have when it speaks of salvation the Bible says that that there's a helmet of salvation and in Thessalonians says it is the helmet of the hope of salvation Faith and salvation are connected righteousness and faith are connected And so you have to Understand faith is believing when even you do not have the evidence Abraham stepped out in faith to climb that mountain with a knife and wood and rope and Holding a fire they went all the way up the mountain.

They built the altar there was no evidence that they were going to get out of it, yet he believed.

Now if we're going to talk about righteousness by faith, then the next question becomes, what does it mean to be righteous?

Well, the general definition we give as Christians in general is that righteousness is right standing with God It also means to be just to be able to stand before God Justified meaning That your sin has been dealt with to be in right standing with god means that your record has been taken care of Somebody ought to say amen.

So when you're when we think about righteousness, we first often go to deeds But you must understand that Righteousness itself means that it is a condition also that you are in You are in right standing with God.

Here's how Christianity that I calm has some good definitions that uses the Webster Merriam-webster dictionary first righteousness is divine to Define today as acting in accord with divine or moral law free from guilt or sin good definition morally right or justifiable there's the word just there a Righteous decision arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality But here's the here's here's the difference righteousness of man and the righteousness of God are different Righteousness by human standards is defined as the quality of being morally true or justifiable The justification is Made according to the conformity of behavior with the regulation like the constitution or laws of the nation that is man's righteousness Right, so you could be right on earth by just keeping the law of the land But there's a deeper meaning In its deeper spiritual meaning Righteousness is the quality of being right in the eyes of God Including and look at what it says including your character Your conscience so your nature your character Your conscience your attitude.

Righteousness by Faith: Growing in Grace

If you had a week like I had, that song is very apropos.

Sometimes our trials come to remind us that this earth is not our home.

And the secret to getting through some of our difficulties is to keep that in mind, amen?

We are gonna continue on our series on righteousness by faith.

It's a five-part series, this is the third part.

I don't know if I'm gonna do the next 1 next week or do my testimony for the month that we're in, but we'll see.

But we, I want to reiterate something I said earlier when we started the series, that there's a lot of great and deep, powerful doctrines we as Adventists have.

But they don't really matter if you don't get this 1.

It does us no good to know all of the workings, all of the conspiracies, and all that the beast is doing and the image of the beast and all this stuff if we don't understand how it is that we are saved.

And for a lot of people, you can get so caught up in all of that stuff that you miss the real crux of what Christianity is and that's what this series is about kind of going back to basics.

So we're going to go to part 3 our scripture reading as I read earlier comes from Romans chapter 3 in verse 23 Romans 3 in verse 23, which says for all have sinned and Come short of the glory of God Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

So our message today is righteousness by faith part 3, growing in grace, growing in grace.

Father God, we thank you for this opportunity to study your word.

Once again, Lord, I just ask that you make me a nail on the wall and on that nail hang a portrait of Jesus Christ.

We need to look into your face today, Lord, for it is by beholding that we become changed.

So Father God, let me not be seen or heard.

We are in need of a word from your throne room today.

Speak Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit, bind the devil, cast him far from here, Lord.

He is trying to mess with many of us right now.

But calm us Lord and give us peace is our prayer in Jesus name.

All right, so we're gonna go to make the point we're gonna use a great Bible case study of 1 of the most interesting Stories in all the Bible in my opinion that is the story of King Manasseh You go to 2nd Chronicles chapter 33 And we're gonna start at verse 1 2nd Chronicles chapter 33 starting at verse 1 says this Manasseh was 12 years old when he began to reign and he reigned 50 and 5 years in Jerusalem.

He is 1 of the longest reigning kings and 1 of the kings that starts youngest.

Now he has the advantage that he would have known well King Hezekiah who was a righteous king but at 12 years old Manasseh ascends and takes the throne and begins a very long reign over the kingdom of Judah.

Verse 2 begins to tell the story of Manasseh.

Verse 2 says, but Manasseh did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, like unto the abominations Of the heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.

So here is the King of Judah, the leader of God's people.

And the Bible starts his story not just with his age and how long he reigns, but with the idea that he took after the heathens.

Verse 3, For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for Balaam, and made groves, and worshipped all the hosts of heaven, and he served them.

So here he is, king of Judah, and this young man whose father was righteous He comes in and he begins to set up altars to Balaam He made groves and worshipped all the hosts of heaven.

He worshipped the Sun he worshipped the moon He worshipped all of the pagan gods.

He brings in to enter the people of God a complete corruption of the worship system I was listening to a little light studios last night.

He's been in some big things He played Muhammad Ali in a move in 1 of the movies.

I think it's called 1 night in Miami either guy who played Muhammad Ali is a seven-day Adventist now And he gives the test testimony and he talks about how God pulled him out of Hollywood.

It's a very very powerful testimony It's he was going home to Ghana and part of his family's Ghanaian So he was going to Ghana and he was taking some like courses that you could take an abbreviated course to get a degree because, you know, where he was in Canada where he grew up, he hadn't gone to college, he'd gone into acting.

And so he decided to pick the biggest book to take to Ghana with him to read.

And so on the list of books he could take for the classes was the Bible So he went home and his mother had 1 of those family Bibles You know the giant family Bibles and he take he puts that in his backpack to go to Ghana Can you imagine when he took that out did to read everywhere he went?

But as he read the Bible from cover to cover he was transformed You got him if you if you if you ask we can send it out.

It's very powerful What's fascinating is while in Hollywood?

He talks about the fact that he says much of what we think doesn't really exist actually absolutely exists in Hollywood He points out all of the corruption the paganism Satan worship he says 1 of the interesting things just speaking to this thing of worshiping all the hosts of heaven is that 1 of the senior actors that many of us watch and probably have watched and listened to in our lives When he was in his trailer to see this senior actor said to him I told him that he worships the Sun and invited him into the cult of Sun worship And that if he does this his career will what flourish Ha I believe Manasseh Thought that if he sided with these pagan gods he would do better as king I believe Manasseh hedged his bets and he looked around the northern kingdom was already in trouble because of Assyria and he looked around and and I think I think he looked at it and he thought in his mind that he would be better off if he served the gods of the world.

The gods of this world do not pay the debt.
