I'm really, I feel it a privilege to be able to speak again here at Abbott Hope this morning.

And I'm especially glad that I can actually see you because for the last 6 months I had lost my my glasses and a friend and I we were in my car and we were going back to our house from I think campus cafeteria or something like that And we saw a woman frantically pumping the tire of her car and the tire was flat.

She was pumping with a bicycle pump trying to get it up.

And So I turned to my friend and I said, shall we help her?

And my friend said, oh man, can you imagine?

He was envisioning us in the heat trying to pump up that car.

But we went over there and we tried to help her.

And it turned out that she had a spare and we tried to change the tire and the tire wouldn't be changed so I went to my car to get a tool and I lifted up to where the wheel was in the wheel well and there were my glasses and I was that week going to buy some new glasses and I was saved 200 or 300 dollars buying glasses.

But unfortunately my glasses when I wear them they make me feel timid.

And so I'm actually going to take them off so I can preach with full force.

Dear Lord, please guide us as we open your word.

Help us not only to be hearers of your word, but doers as well.

Please turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 10.

Luke chapter 10 verse 25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

The question of eternal life has been asked by people since the dawn of time.

It is a question that seeks to find meaning of this life.

Why do we get up in the morning and we go through work and we get tired and then we go to sleep and then we get up again and we do the same thing all over again?

Why is there so much heartache in this world and pain?

Why are there bitter sorrows that always beset us?

And if there is something after this life, because almost everybody believes that people die, When you die, something happens.

But it doesn't, according to the Bible, it doesn't happen immediately.

But if you die, is there something on the other side?

And if there is something on the other side, is it good?

Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

The Bible says that he stood up and he tempted Jesus, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

He did not come asking Christ in a way that was pure.

He wanted to tempt Christ and set a trap for Christ.

He thought that he had a solution to his question.

And that solution was that the problem was not with him, but rather the problem was with God.

In his question, he was essentially saying, I have read the Bible so many times and I know what the Bible says But God has not told me how I can inherit eternal life.

What do I have to do to inherit eternal life?

And so therefore I have a license to do whatever I want and practice my religion the way I want because God has not told me how I should practice my life, what I should do to inherit eternal life.

Jesus answered him and said, he said unto him, what is written in the law?

There are millions in this world today, millions of Christians who go through life Christians who go through life thinking that pastors will be their life coaches.

They think that when the pastor says, read this book and in 40-50 days you'll be transformed, or pray this prayer and your business will be enriched, or do this thing and God will bless you.

They think that is all that is required of them to inherit eternal life.

But what they don't realize is that while they do these things, they go on pilgrimages to church and they try to get as close as possible to God.

They go and they kiss statues and they go to holy lands and they stand where Jesus stood and they stand where rich rulers or religious people stood, and they try to think that they'll be closer to God that way.

They'll do anything they can, but read the word of God.

People, there is a need for a group of people that will be able to read the word of God and read it for what it says and then ask God to give them the power to do what it says.

And today, God is asking us, how readest thou the word of God?

And the answering said, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and thy neighbor as thyself.

And he put them together, but they made sense together.

And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast answered right, this do, and thou shalt live.

But you see, carnal minds, they always wrestle with questions.

Whenever they read the word of God instead of it becoming more clear to their minds a Thousand questions crop up in their minds and they can't they have to answer every single question Before they can continue reading God's Word and find out his will for his life I'm not saying that that when you read God's Word you just read it literally and you do what it says, just as it says literally, you know, he sacrificed a goat and so you go and sacrifice a goat.

What I'm saying is that people, there are some people who have not been converted in their heart.

And as a result, when they read God's Word, all these questions come up and they would rather spend time answering those questions than trying to find out whether God has solutions to those questions in His Word.

But he, willing to justify himself, verse 29, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

The man was not satisfied with reading his Bible and finding out what God required of him.

He had a religion that included Bible study, but not 1 that fed and drank on the word of God.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer says this, He was content to be ever learning, but never coming to the knowledge of truth.

Happy to settle for a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof.

He could not believe what Gawdsword was saying, because he had, through his actions and through his unbelief, he had branded his conscience as with a hot iron.

He tried to answer the question of what we should do to inherit eternal life.

And he said there are 8 ways, actually 8 ways to inherit eternal life.

There was another man that came along and his name was Muhammad, and he said there are 5, you do 5 pillars, 5 things, and you will inherit eternal life.

There are close to 2 billion followers that follow these 2 men.

And as a result, we have young men that sit in temples and they clang gongs all day long.

And we have young men who strap themselves with bombs and they go into churches and they blow themselves up all in the quest of trying to capture, trying to inherit eternal life.

Jesus decided that he would answer this question even though the motives of the man were not right, even though the man was trying to trap him, and doing all this stuff, and even though the man asked a question, and he knew the answer to the question, God still chose to answer, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Jesus answering him said, he told a story of church members.

And in answering that story, he showed what it takes to inherit eternal life and please understand this eternal life is a gift of God it is not something that we can do and we rack up certain amount of good works and then they're weighed against our bad works that's what Islam says and then whichever 1 is good it depends whether you're going up or down.

But rather, God is the 1 who gives us, he's given us a chance through Jesus Christ for eternal life through his sacrifice on the cross.

But Jesus over here told a story of certain church members.

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.

This man was going to take a path, a road that he knew would go through some very dangerous areas.

It's like a girl who is getting out of work at 9 o'clock in the evening and going to the parking lot and realizing that everybody else left at 5.

And she knows and she's praying in her heart, Lord, please don't let this happen to me.

This man, he knew that this road that he was taking was infested with robbers.

And I'm sure in his heart he was praying, Lord, please don't let this happen to me.

And as he was walking down that way, men came out of the bushes, out of the trees, and they stood in front of him.

And he realized, Lord, this is going to happen to me.

You see, I was in that situation several years ago and I know the crippling fear that takes hold of your heart.

Your knees knock together and you can't think of anything.

Your mouth goes dry and all you can say is, God save me.
