Peace in the Storm

So we'll jump in and I'll just try to follow along with where I'm at down here But I want to break down just for a second the magnitude of the storm we had So for a four-day period from 8 a.m.

On September 28, we in Hendersonville, I know this isn't exactly Hendersonville, but close enough, received 21.96 inches of rain in 4 days.

And there's a reason that helps us start understanding why they call it historic.

You can see 1 area received almost 31 inches of rain.

So this is called, this comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA.

So if you go across on 4 days of rainfall and come down the thousand-year time period, that shows us 13.1 inches of rain.

That's the thousand-year mark for 4 days of rain, and how many inches did I say we got?

So the historic thousand-year mark was 13.1, and somehow we came down with almost 22 inches.

So if you go start scrolling down you have to go to 30 days to get to 21.5 inches in a thousand years.

45 days is 24.4 So somewhere between 30 days and 45 days is the thousand year mark on how much rain we just got.

You can see why, here in the mountains, what does water want to do?

And it finds these creeks and rivers, which we aren't used to flooding that bad, you can see why we had historic flooding, right?

It had to go somewhere, and sadly it caused so much damage.

How many people had damage to a house or a car?

How many people had trees in your yard fall?

I'm gonna be real jealous if 1 of you is not raising your hand.

How many people still don't have water running?

Okay, there's a couple of you still there.

I bet you live up north a little bit more than where we are here.

I'm going to share something that sometimes has made me cringe a little bit.

And it kind of is a weird thing, but I cringe sometimes when I'm in a group like this, a big room, and someone says, well, God blessed me and my house didn't get hurt.

And I cringe because some of you, God is trying to bless still in your house, Sherry and Jeff.

I think of you guys, Your houses were hammered.

And why I cringe is the opposite isn't true.

It doesn't mean God isn't going to try to bless you in some way.

But I do think it comes from we are looking at this a little bit wrong.

Yes, water and power are a blessing and our homes are a blessing, but I think we miss the focus of life.

I feel we are missing the peace in the storm.

So Satan comes in to the councils of God, which I don't know if we fully comprehend exactly how that works, but he comes walking in and God's kind of like, so where have you been?

And he says, walking to and fro on the earth.

And God looks at Job and says, have you checked out My servant Job?

Man, there's no 1 as blameless and upright as Job.

And then we turn, and it's in your paper, to Job 1, verses 9 and 10, and this is Satan's response.

So Satan answered the Lord and said, does Job fear God for nothing?

Have you not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?

You have blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land." You see, Satan's complaining, right?

Satan's like the only reason Job follows you is because you've protected everything he has.

He follows you out of greed of possessions and protection.

So why don't you take all of this away and we'll see what happens.

Job 1.12 And the Lord said to Satan, Behold, all that he has is in your power.

We all know the story that Satan destroys everything Job has.

And Job somehow through that stands firm for God.

So much so, Satan comes and complains and says, well, it's because you haven't let me touch him yet.

Does Job's experience have sadness and heartache?

This story isn't about having a sense of sadness and heartache.

In fact, in the midst of the suffering, he says, blessed be the name of the Lord.

I did want to point out a few things to draw out.

I could speak for a long time on Job and draw lots of points, but there's Just a couple things I want to pull out of Job's story for today.

First of all, Job, did he do something wrong?

Job was kind of doing everything in some ways right and got in the crosshairs of Satan.

And at times, Satan in this story, and we see it in life, Satan blames God's protection and accuses us that is The only reason we follow Him.

How would we know who true followers of Christ were is if I came in and just had prosperity, prosperity, prosperity, prosperity, because I followed Christ.

I will speak in the bitterness of my soul." It's okay to mourn.

The point is that Job held firm in his belief in God.
