Characteristics of a Wise Man

Father in heaven, thank you so much for the privilege that we have to come together this morning to study your word.

Be with our friends and our family who are sick right now.

I know there's a lot of individuals who are not feeling well, and I just pray for a hand of healing upon them, especially for Weston and his family, a hand of healing upon them especially, Lord.

And we pray that for her speedy recovery.

Be our guest of honor this morning, Lord.

Help us to have minds to hear and eyes to see the things that you would want us to take home today.

I pray for an experience with you at the feet of Jesus.

So today's discussion is gonna be characteristics of a wise man.

This week I was looking at a wise man in scripture.

Now, I don't know about you, but I like, Did this turn off?

I like looking at themes, words, certain types of people in scripture and tracking it all the way through scripture and kind of getting an idea of an idea.

So for example, when I was a brand new Christian, I wanted to understand the word faith.

I read every verse that mentioned the word faith from Genesis to Revelation, and then I was able to get a general idea of what scripture had to say about the idea of faith.

My first personal commentary I wrote was on Proverbs chapter 31.

You know what that chapter, if you know what that chapter, you know, yeah, you're at that stage in life if you know what that chapter's about.

I was like, oh, this might be a good chapter.

It became a 50 page commentary, by the way.

And that was so I can understand the idea of what is this person in scripture.

In the gospels, there are multiple parables where Jesus actually says something about an individual that he refers to as a wise man.

If you da, da, da, da, da, you are a wise man.

And so I thought it'd be interesting to look at multiple parables and look at the different references to a wise man and compile a list of what are the characteristics, biblically, of a wise man.

How many of you wanna be a wise man or wise woman?

But I don't wanna be wise in the ways of the world.

The Bible says that you can be wise in the ways of the world.

The Bible says that you can be like wise in the ways of the world.

I want to be the wise man that Jesus talks about.

We're going to look at, as I mentioned, 3 points.

We're gonna look at wisdom according to the Gospels first, this wise man in the Gospels.

Then we're gonna look at wisdom according to the book of Proverbs.

And there's a lot, so I just picked a lot of the key ones that weren't as repetitive necessarily.

And then we're gonna look at our last point, obtaining true wisdom.

So let's talk about the first parable, the gospel, and the gospel is our first point.

Matthew chapter 7, beginning in verse 24.

Now this is a very powerful, powerful idea.

I actually spoke on this last night at a Vespers program.

This is the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

This is the end of a 3 chapter string of teachings that Jesus gave in repetition.

So chapter 5, 6, and 7, with no breaks was the Sermon on the Mount.

And it's interesting because of how he ends that sermon gives you some insight into being a wise man.

So Matthew chapter 7, beginning in verse 24.

Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a what kind of a man?

A wise man who built his house on the rock.

And The rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

But everyone who hears these sayings of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house.

And the wise man is typically compared to what kind of the man?

So probably the next series will be the characteristics of a, no I'm just kidding, won't be.

But you know, you could probably do the same thing and look at the characteristics of a foolish man in scripture and say, Lord, help me not, and look at a wise man and say, Lord, help me be, amen?

And so anyway, so here you have the 2 men.

They come, they build, And Jesus tells you already right from the beginning what it means, kind of the interpretation of what's going on here.

If you hear these sayings and do them, you will be the what?

So the first characteristics are pretty simple.

You hear the things that Jesus says, but you actually what?

Like there's like the added caveat to that.

It's not just I understand what Jesus communicated, but I apply the thing that he communicated to my life.

This is just a side note for your own personal edification and Bible study.

Sometimes we read scriptures and we generalize what's being said out of the context.

He just finished the Sermon on the Mount.

So when he said, whoever hears and does these sayings of mine, what is he referring to?

So if you wanna be a Christian who has a house that never falls, what should you probably study?

And not only should you study and understand it, but you should make sure that you are, you are applying it to your life, amen?

If you, I genuinely believe that if we all fully understood the message of the Sermon on the mount and all of its principles and applied them faithfully to our lives, we would have houses that never fall.

That's not my idea, that's what Jesus said, right?
