Our gracious Father in heaven, Lord, all of us struggle.

So help us in that regard for this is our prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

All right, so coming back to the quote that I've been quoting several times so far, we've kind of looked at the first half and we're trying to look at the second half of this right now.

So the question is asked, what is justification by faith?

It is the work of God in laying the glory of man in the dust.

So that's what we've been looking at so far.

I want to look at the second half of that statement.

And doing for man that which it is not in his power to do for himself.

So in order to understand that second half, I want us to think about covenant.

So covenant is not a word that we typically use on a daily basis anymore, but basically think of it as a contract.

So sometimes people think of covenant as a promise.

Yes, but promise really doesn't quite cover it.

Covenant actually covers the idea of, I'm sorry, contract covers the idea of covenant much better because you have 2 parties that are signing a contract, if you will, promising that they will do, oh, why did it move to that?

So let's actually go to Jeremiah chapter 34 and Let's see how a covenant was established.

And we're gonna be looking at the pattern of how covenants were established throughout the Old Testament actually.

It says here, and I, excuse me, it says, and I will give the men who have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me, when they cut the calf in 2 and passed between the parts of it.

So for those of you who haven't read this before, this is a very strange thing that is happening.

I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life.

Their dead bodies shall be for meat for the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the earth." So God is describing what happened in a covenant.

Actually in the Hebrew it says, they don't say establish a covenant, they say they cut a covenant.

The verb that's associated with covenant is cut and what they did was they would take an animal, okay let's say that this is 1 animal, they would cut the animal in half.

And let's say I'm a king of a country, and what's your name?

Shanice, Shanice is the queen of her country, and we are establishing a covenant between these 2 countries.

We will cut the animals in 2 and she and I will walk through the dead animal carcass together.

And what that is saying is I am promising that I will be faithful to my end of the contract, and she will be faithful to her end of the contract, and if I were to break the covenant, whatever happened to this animal, let it happen to me.

It's dead serious business when we're talking about covenant.

So in the Old Testament, there are several, there are lots of covenants, but there are 4 major, major covenants that establish a new era if you will.

So any guesses as to the 4 different covenants that God made with?

Major individuals in the Bible that God made covenants with.

Yes, God does make a covenant with Jacob, but it's actually an extension of the covenant that God made with Abraham.

So that's not 1 of the 4 major covenants.

So there's Abraham, there's Noah, there's 2 more.

Mount Sinai, so through Moses and to Israel, So that's the third 1.

The word covenant isn't really used there.

So what we're gonna do is we're gonna look at all 4 of those major covenants and see the pattern that comes with those covenants.

And in Genesis chapter 9, the word covenant is used for the first time in the Bible.

And you have the covenant that is made with Noah.

And it says here, then God, verse 11, it says, thus God says, I establish my covenant with you.

Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood.

Never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.

So God is establishing a covenant with Abraham, I'm sorry, excuse me, with Noah.

And Noah probably says, amen, yes, Lord, I'll be faithful to my end, I believe you'll be faithful to your end.

And do you think Noah was sincere when he was making that covenant with God or was he just kind of like pretend, let's make a covenant?

And verse 17, and God said to Noah, this is the sign of the covenant which I established between me and all the flesh that is on the earth.

So God signs the covenant, if you will, by showing the rainbow.

That's God's signature, if you will, of the covenant.

What's the very next story that comes after?

Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and so on and so forth.

And verse 20, and Noah began to be a farmer and he planted a vineyard.

Then he drank of the wine and was drunk and became uncovered in his tent, just completely naked.

And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his 2 brothers outside.

Basically what Ham is doing, he's taking out his phone, taking a selfie with his dad, of his naked dad, and uploading it on Instagram, that's what he's doing.

That's the very next story that you have right after God establishes a covenant with Noah.
