The Truth About the Sabbath Rest

The title of this message is The Truth About Sabbath Rest.

It's beautiful to see all of your faces this morning.

I wanna share with you a message, A message that God has given me that has completely transformed the way I look at the Sabbath.

And I hope by the end of this message that you will never look at the Sabbath day again.

God has given me a depth of understanding to it that has just honestly blown my mind.

I want to share with you, I want to start by sharing with you a story.

A hobby of mine, I can't really call it a hobby, something I do sometimes just to relax.

I don't know where the closest 1 is, maybe Spokane or something like that.

Going to Barnes and Noble Bookstore, I'm always like researching something.

There's topics, there's always these topics of interest I'm looking into and I'll look at different books.

And 1 of the things that I've gotten really interested in lately is plant-based cooking.

I've been plant-based for a long time but we have a plant-based outreach where 2 to 3 Friday nights per month we have a cooking class for the community.

And it's where we come in contact with a lot of our non-Adventists in our church area.

Health is really trendy, and there's a lot of people into that who live up that way.

And so Sometimes I'll go to the cookbook section and I'll find these different plant-based books and I'll look for recipes.

I was doing that at this Barnes & Noble and I was looking at these plant-based recipes.

This guy comes over and he picks up a book and he's looking through a book as well.

I looked over and just kind of made eye contact with him and I smiled he smiled and he said hey How's it going?

He said hi, and he was a really friendly guy He said I like your coat.

I have this like a wool pea coat thing and I said, oh thank you so much.

And he says, what kind of book you got there?

I'm like, oh, it's a book on plant-based cooking.

He goes, well, it was a book about how to go out into the forest and kill wild game and gut it and bring it home.

And he's like, yeah, it's about, you know, how to kill animals and gut them and like bring the meat back home.

And he's like, my book's probably gonna make you pass out.

And I'm like, you're good, man, you're good.

And we started talking And we had a really nice conversation, just an unusually friendly guy, just a really nice guy.

And at the end, you know, I really believe nothing's an accident when you put your life in God's hands.

And so I always carry literature with me.

I have this wallet, and I bought this wallet for a specific purpose.

It's got a little slot in it and I put little glow tracks in there.

And so I said, hey I have something for you.

I gave it to him and he took it and opened it and looked at it.

So We started talking and eventually he asked, are you affiliated with a certain denomination?

And I said, I'm a Seventh-day Adventist Christian.

And as we're talking about the Sabbath, I said, yeah, you know, as Seventh-day Adventists, we believe that the fourth commandment's still binding and that it's Saturday and we keep the Saturday as a Sabbath holy.

And he looked me right in the eye, and he said, brother, you know you don't need to keep the Sabbath anymore.

He says, Jesus said, come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

I was like, well, I don't exactly see it that way.

And we started a discussion which turned out into an all-out religious debate.

And at a certain point in time, 2 other women overheard our conversation and jumped in the conversation and got involved in the debate.

And at a certain point, this guy, he ended up being a preacher for this...

It's not a denomination, it's its own little church.

They're independent churches and they're like the only church congregation in the world that has this truth.

And it was 1 of these little funny little independent churches like this.

And he had some very interesting takes on scripture and everyone else was lost and they were the only saved ones and you know, just all that stuff.

And so, he had some strange beliefs as well and these these women overheard him sharing these strange beliefs and as the conversation went on he went away from his talking voice and he started getting into his preaching voice and we're talking like Bible belt style preaching like he's getting fired up and he's doing the hand motions and he's doing this and he's he's preaching and these women over here and they're like, did I hear you say you don't believe this and this and they got involved and at this point I realized this is getting out of hand and so I was like I we need to shut this down.

This is and this is Barnes and Noble, so it's kind of kind of a liberal crowd, You know, like it's and there's all these kids with like these, you know, purple hair and stuff and they're looking at us with these big eyes and they're walking around.

I'm like, Oh no, this is like the worst witness ever.

Like, hey, there's 4 Christians in Barnes and Noble and we're all arguing.

You know, this is and all these progressive kids are all looking at us.

And so thankfully, the conversation did eventually shut down and we walked away from it.

But I kept thinking about what he said about Matthew 11, 28.

And I had a little rebuttal for him, but I thought, I would just like to revisit that.

I went and I, but I started thinking more about what he said about Jesus is our rest.

And this is an argument that's out there.

So if you have Jesus, you stop keeping that Old Testament law.

Was Jesus the rest for Old Testament believers also?

The Old Testament believers also got rest.

It says, Lord help us our God for we rest on thee.

The Old Testament believers entered to God's rest.

Psalms 37 7, David says, rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Did the Old Testament believers have rest?
