Whole People Doing Wholistic Ministry: The Integration of Healing and Discipleship

Our Father in Heaven, we want to thank you for giving us a chance to meet together, and we pray that what we'll discuss this afternoon will be of benefit to those who are here present, and to those who might hear later on through audio voice.

And we pray that your Holy Spirit will guide us in what we do and what we say.

We talked about that last night, and you can find me in the program notes.

We're going to talk about several things kind of put into 1, all right?

But the idea is whole people doing whole holistic ministry, right?

You know we live in a broken world, right?

And we say human beings are broken and we have to be fixed and Jesus came to make us whole.

So If Jesus has made you whole, you're whole indeed, right?

But oftentimes, we go back to our natural selves, and most of us, we're kind of this other, this alter ego, this natural self that's doing things.

And in my own particular situation, I had help along the way, right?

You know, Jesus sends people in your life to help you, and there's a list of some of the people who helped me along the way, and many more, right?

Somebody who's not on that list, who's not a professional helper, is actually my personal trainer, and that's my wife.

And for the husbands in the room, I am sure if you have a wife who is anything like my wife, and I'm sure your wife is very much like my wife, wives help husbands a lot.

We'll be going a little bit fast because we have a lot of things that we want to talk about.

But the first thing that I want to ask you is to clarify why.

If you have a notepad or your electronic device, I want you to write this question down.

What motivates you to engage in healing ministry?

What is it that caused you to get involved in this?

And I'm not just saying be involved in health care or being involved in pastoral care.

I'm talking about being involved in ministry, right?

What is it that motivates you and motivated you to engage in a healing ministry?

And how do I, you in this case, define wholeness in my life and in those that I serve?

If we say we are whole, then how did you define that?

If we say we are broken, what does that mean?

If people who come to us are broken, what does that mean?

In what aspects of their lives are they broken?

And what is wholeness that we are defining for them and what God will define for them.

And then what is my sense of calling or divine assignment?

Do we still have, for those of us who have been in practice or involved in this journey for quite a while, Do we still have that spark that was there at the beginning when somehow God arrested our attention and we said, I want to do this.

Hopefully, you know, encounters like this at AMEN every year will help to rekindle that flame, rekindle that fire.

But The question, what is my sense of calling?

Well, if you'd like a copy of any of these things, just I'll give you my email address and you can send me a note and I'll send them to you.

In Corinthians we're told that we should assess ourselves, we should check out and see how we're doing.

How am I doing in my physical dimension, my personal health, my vitality, my self-care, my mental state, emotional regulation, focus, stress management, how am I doing in these areas?

Well, if we're going to be healers, we're gonna be helping other people, it's very difficult to give what you don't have.

Let me see, who should I pick on to give me a million bucks just today?

Can you give me a million dollars right now?

Now there are some people who I would ask and they could not say that, but I'm not going to ask them.

What what what to us is our spiritual sense?

Are we maturing still, maturing spiritually?

What do we think when other people aren't looking?

Now obviously I'm not asking you to tell me anything.

I want you to think about this yourself the way I do from time to time myself.

Social, my relationships, my teamwork, my communication with people, my clinical competence.

You know, we often talk in, when we talk about ministry and whatnot, we talk about the the spiritual aspects and the moral aspects of things.

But you know people don't come to us typically for that.

What they come for is for clinical competence.

They come because they think we can help them with their medical problem or their emotional problem if we are into behavioral health or so, they come for this.

So there is no excuse for not being clinically competent and clinically excellent, right?

The other is the icing on the cake, so to speak, Vegan icing on the vegan cake or whatever, right?

It's the extra that somebody gets when they come and they meet you or they meet me in an office or in the hospital.

Are we involved in community engagement and discipleship?

I want to posit that sometimes we use terms that diminish our sense of ministry and our sense of mission.

And 1 of the words that we don't use often enough, in my view, is the word disciple.

You know, we say you're a member, you're a member of the church.

Okay, but that's not how God looks at us.

And there's something special about being a disciple.

It means that you are a, you are totally committed, you're a follower of Jesus Christ, if you're a disciple of his, and that's what we're supposed to do.

The Integration of Faith and Healing

I was at about 10 years old, getting a bit frustrated.

I said, this woman, that was why she seemed so miserable.

Before I discarded, let me just look at 1 of her books.

And it happened to be the Ministry of Emo.

The bits that I read, I thought, wow, this, I've never heard of doctors doing this sort of thing.

And even though I was 10 years old, I was a little bit cunning.

I said, well, if a doctor did this sort of work, he could make a lot of money.

And so in my head, that's where I started, this idea of becoming a doctor.

Thankfully, I made my way into medical school, and I remember my very first day in medical school.

The dean says, Why do you want to be a doctor?

I said, Well, because I want to cure people.

And he looked over his glasses and he said, We don't cure people, we treat people.

I thought I was coming to be a doctor to cure people.

Went through medical school, my head got turned a little bit.

When I was up at Cambridge doing doing cardiothoracic surgery I had my professor professor at Cambridge doing cardiothoracic surgery and we had this man walk in to the clinic and he needed a redo of his bypass.

He was too sick to have a redo of his bypass.

This professor with all the knowledge and skill said there's nothing we can do and we let him go out of the office and we know he died within 3 months.

At the same time, I couldn't say the whole thing, I had a couple of restaurants in London called plant-based restaurants, and people were sending me messages saying you know since I've been coming to your restaurant I need fewer medications.

Well it's interesting here I am doing surgery in Cambridge with some success but my restaurant is helping people.

Maybe I should be doing more of that, and less of this.

And so I left surgery, and if you understand what I'm saying, to leave Cambridge rotation in surgery was a big deal.

And so I sort of, I retrained as a GP, you understand, GP, general practitioner and set up my own clinic in lifestyle medicine.

And since that time I've been coming back and forth to America looking at the science, seeing that you can reverse heart disease see you can reverse type 2 diabetes so maybe I should just take you on a path of how I give you some something something right so and by the way, what I should say in the beginning is this, what Dr.

Zinner was saying, what we've heard and we've thought throughout this conference already when we're talking about healing and faith, it begins with faith and it begins with the fate of the physician.

You know, God gives us these wonderful gifts of knowledge.

I say this, I was reading this text from Abraham Lincoln, and somebody was saying to him, we should pray, this is during the Civil War, we should pray that the law is on our side.

Abraham Lincoln said no, we should pray that we are on the Lord's side.

So when I'm talking to you about faith, we have our ambitions.

I know we've all got our own ambitions inside of us.

But we have to make sure that we're on the Lord's side when he gives you this information sometimes if you're doing something innovative not everybody's going to go with you.

That faith is the thing that will keep you going.

I say that because when we first started, when I first started, helping people reverse diabetes, nobody believed.

I remember seeing, I've even got clippings of newspapers saying, yes, this quack doctor is coming to tell you about how to reverse type 2 diabetes.

I'll tell you what, that sort of publicity got me so many people.

That controversy got people even more interested in what we were doing so let me just give you a little bit of a roundup of how we do it we have to understand the physiology of diabetes and I was even talking about it this morning on a podcast the cell needs glucose to survive Glucose can't just get into the cell.

Insulin has to be released by into the cell, open up the gates for glucose to come in.

But over the years, if you've been getting lots of insulin by eating the cell, the cell becomes easily immune.

Have you ever played this game, knock down ginger?

Knock down gingers when you knock on the door of somebody's house and run away you still never none of you okay just me ding-dong ditch okay well that's kind of like what happens to the cell it becomes resistant and doesn't open up anymore that's pretty much the basis of type 2 diabetes so what you want to do is to make the cell insulin sensitive again.

You take away the stimulus for all the insulin.

So if you have a healthy plant-based diet, I always say the first few weeks, beans, greens and vegetables only.

You do that for 2 weeks, the insulin sensitivity starts to come back into the cells, okay?

In fact, for me, within a week, within 4 weeks, you can usually get people to reverse their type 2 diabetes.

Within the first week, you can get them off their medication.

We've never had a type 2 diabetic that's gone through the system that hasn't reversed.

The oldest person we had was 96 years old who had diabetes for over 40 years.

So when people try to tell you, you know, it could be genetic and there's nothing you can do about it, that's not true.

It doesn't matter about your genetic background, you can always do something to reverse.

For many of these chronic diseases, Through this system, what we call life colors, we can help prevent and reverse the disease.

But we're not just here talking about the physical.

And I must say, It's in these sorts of meetings where I feel as a physician more complete.

People come to you and you give the treatment.

You may give surgery, you may give medicine, you may give whatever, but they come to you for the final opinion.

You're the 1 who gives them that liberty.

And sometimes we can feel we are the final opinion, but we're not.

It's trying to move them onto the spiritual, which is the key.

Well, let's say you've got the person and they have now been cured of type 2 diabetes.

They haven't come to you for anything spiritual.

But I can guarantee you they've been all over the place and they've never seen this before and they're now free.

What I then say to them is this, look, you've been cured physically, but do you want to know how you got there in the first place?

And they say, well, yeah, I know, because I didn't eat properly and I didn't.

You know, what is the reason that compelled you to eat the way you did?

There is something inside, stress, anxiety, bitterness, unforgiveness.

There's something inside that you're really trying to come with, that you can never do with food.

But what you can do is start to deal and repair your emotional health.

So we've gone from physical, now we're going on to emotional health.

Transformed by Grace: Ten Years of Whole-Person Ministry

So we want to welcome you to this seminar, which is entitled, Daniel Fast, 10 Years of Transformational Health Ministry in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Bailey, why don't you introduce yourself?

I'm Royce Bailey, and Loma Linda graduate, internal medicine and cardiology and public health.

And they said, after that, get out of here.

So I went to North Carolina, to our Adventist Hospital there, and there I have been for the last few years.

And we have put together a program of how to reach those that appear to be unreachable.

We wanted to reach to the community and figure out ways that we can address their health needs as well as their spiritual needs.

Because when we talk about health, we talk about, really, sanctification, do we not?

And it's where it goes from there to that P word that everybody hates, perfect, being perfect.

And we're talking about character perfection, and that's tough to do when your diet is terrible.

And so Daniel Fast is 1 way that we have helped many in our community, and we're gonna talk about that.

So let's go ahead and have a word of prayer as we begin.

Father in heaven, thank you for the privilege that we have to be here, and we are asking that your Holy Spirit would guide this discussion as we talk about your work and we pray this in your name.

There was a couple named Ken and Brenda Allen.

His wife Brenda had grown up Baptist, and both of them had had similar experiences at their churches.

They had had a pastor that they loved and the church had kicked out that pastor.

They were discouraged and they're at a place where they were looking for a church.

For 3 years they were praying, God send us a church.

At the same time, they were going through health challenges and they came across at the Mountain Fair, there in Arden area, they came across a booth that was run by Seventh-day Adventists, and they were given a little pamphlet that said, who are Seventh-day Adventists?

And Ken read that and thought that was interesting, and he gave it to his wife and she said, I want nothing to do with the Seventh-day Adventists.

Well in 2016 they were opening the newspaper and they saw an ad Similar to this 1.

I'm not sure exactly what year this was from but Similar to this newspaper ad they saw an ad of the newspaper for this thing called the Daniel fast They were interested in health and they were open to going to a new church So they go to the Daniel fast and for the very first time they experience Community They had never had someone at church talk to them like people did at the Daniel Fast.

And so while they were going to the Daniel Fast, they were interested in health at the same time, learning about health.

And they ended up in the middle of the program saying, you know what?

And so in the middle of the program they attended on a Sabbath morning and Over time by God's grace.

They got baptized They learned what we believe is some Davines learned the 3 angels messages And we're gonna show a picture and share some more stories at the end.

But we just want to begin with this quotation.

We're told, I was again shown that the health reform is 1 branch of the great work, which is to fit a people for the coming of the Lord.

It is as closely connected with the third angel's message as the hand is with the body." Isn't that interesting?

So health and spirituality go hand in hand, specifically health ministry in the third angel's message.

So in just a minute, I'm going to turn it over to Dr.

Bailey to kind of share the nuts and bolts of what is the Daniel fast but in a nutshell the Daniel fast is a Bible and science-based health program that's inspired by the experiences of Daniel And we look to Daniel chapter 1 and also Daniel chapter 10.

A lot of us are familiar with these ideas and what Daniel did, but in Daniel chapter 1 verse 8, Daniel purposed in his heart, I'm not going to defile myself with the King's food.

He had just come from, came from Jerusalem, came from Israel, went to a new place, to Babylon.

1 of the images that stuck in my mind as a kid is that big pig on the table.

You know, as a kid's Bible story, like, wow, what is that thing?

Probably the first time I saw pork in my life as an Adventist kid.

And, you know, Daniel sees that and says, I am not touching that.

We know the story that God blessed him abundantly because of that.

But also, and not everyone is as familiar with Daniel chapter 10, but Daniel went on a Daniel fast.

He fasted for 3 weeks, and he specifically didn't eat pleasant food, not rich or indulgent food.

So he wasn't completely getting rid of all foods.

He wasn't saying, I'm gonna eat no food for 3 weeks, but specifically he was fasting from things that were sweet, fine breads, indulgent food, that sort of thing, and saying, you know, I'm gonna focus on my relationship with God.

So based on those principles, Daniel Fass takes those ideas and says, over a 3 to 4 week time period, we're gonna teach people in the community how to eat a plant-based diet and how to stay away from some of these Animal products and refined foods and a lot of people is the first time that they're hearing about health But they're excited about it and praise God that God has blessed this program when it first started There you know were maybe 50 60 70 people that were attending And you can see in the left-hand corner that sweet lady named Doris Walter.

And Doris Walter's daughter is here, Judy, and her son-in-law, Dr.

This lady in her 90s is getting up there and just passionately sharing with people what the health message is and what God can do in their life.

And she's the 1 that started this program at Hendersonville, powerful program, And that program really grew.

It started out in our fellowship hall, but praise God, over time, by the time I got there, about 3 years ago, it went up to our family life center, which is our gymnasium, so it went about from 50, 60, 70 people to Now we average maybe 115, 120 people.

A lot of those people, I would say most of those people are not Seventh-day Adventists.

And we're gonna be sharing a lot of stories of how God has worked in this program.

Bailey, why don't you tell us a little more about why we do the Daniel Fast and some of the science behind this program?

You know, we try to integrate faith with everything we do.

And so Health is the outreach that we use, and that's our evangelism.

And you can use this same kind of program.

It could be any kind of cooking schools or anything like that.

Ask the health provider or dinner with the health provider, dinner with the doctor, those kind of things.

Now, the Daniel Fast, just looked on Wikipedia, because this isn't new to Seventh-day Adventists, the Daniel Fast is an international program in Christianity.

It's a partial fast, nobody starves, in which there's no meat, dairy, alcohol, or rich foods.

They're avoided in favor of vegetables and water in order to be more sensitive to God.

We've advertised this to the public, that help to cleanse your body, and we have people that look for it every year, non-Adventists that come and are waiting for us to put this on.

We did ours in January this last year, and we're having Barbara O'Neill come next week, so that will be also a big outreach to the community.

We want people to be clear that this is how we start.

Now, let me tell you, from a physician point of view, that means carpal tunnel syndrome because you're chopping a lot and TMJ because you're chewing a lot.
