The Thinnest Line: Sexual Purity in a World Corrupted

Our scripture reading is going to come from 1st Corinthians 6 and verse 18.

Every sin that a man does is without the body.

But he that commits fornication sins against his own body.

Our message this Sabbath is entitled, The Thinnest Line.

Father God we thank you for this opportunity to study your word.

I want to pray and ask now Lord that you just make me a nail hammered into the wall by your Holy Spirit.

Then Lord I ask that upon that nail you hang a portrait of Jesus Christ.

Instead Father God we want to hear a word from the throne room of grace.

If you have your Bible, you can go with me to 2 Samuel chapter 13.

We're going to come from here and we're going to go from a passage in 1 Thessalonians as well.

And we are going to build a case and we are going to follow through this thing.

Now I want you if you can follow along some of you young people take notes.

Now to give you the backdrop of the story, in the previous chapter, David, King David is visited by the prophet Nathan and David is called out for his sin with Bathsheba.

And a punishment is even given to David that in fact 4 of his children are going to die because he killed Uriah the Hittite.

The story sets the stage that David's sexual sin is going to forever corrupt, alter, and taint the kingdom.

And we know that within just a generation or 2 generations, the whole kingdom splits in half and sexual sin follows Israel and Judah all the way through.

But it shows up right away in the chapter after Nathan goes to David to give him his rebuke in 2nd Samuel 13 and verse 1.

The Bible says this, and it came to pass after this that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister whose name was Tamar and Amnon the son of David loved her.

The story is 1 of the most difficult stories in the Bible to read never mind preach.

The story begins with the fact that David by now has had children from many, many different women, as we're going to see in a second.

And it's, and I highlight the word fear there because David's daughter, Tamar, had to have been incredibly beautiful.

She was a virgin and there was special clothes that she actually wore, very colorful dresses.

This was an amazing young lady, not just because of her physical beauty, but because spiritually she was a child of God.

But the story takes a weird twist and it says, and Amnon the son of David loved her.

Now what is the problem with this from the outset of the story?

They are half siblings, making the story weird.

In fact, here's the genealogy of David's progeny.

And you can see in Hebron, he had all these different wives, had all these different kings, kids.

And you can see later on actually Absalom jumps into the story.

And you see they were from the same mother.

So Absalom wanted to protect his full sister.

Amnon fell in love with her and just to show you the consequences of sin, literally 4 of David's children will die before the next few chapters of the of the book 2 Samuel are over.

Now I want to point out something, I don't have time to really get into this this morning, but I do want to point out that from Bathsheba there are 2 kids that David has.

Now interestingly, Bathsheba is the 1 who David commits adultery with And when you look at Bathsheba, it is from her lineage that both Joseph and Mary come from.

And then of course Jesus is raised by Joseph and comes from Mary.

Now, So much you could say about that, because you would think, well, if Bathsheba was involved in such a scandal, why would Jesus come from her?

Let me tell you something, all of the women, when you track back into Jesus' life, all 4 of the women, or at least the 3 ancient women, they have issues.

And Amnon was so vexed, Jamaican people like to use the word vexed, so this word is very familiar to me growing up Jamaican.

He was so vexed that he fell sick for his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.

What is interesting when you look at that is his mindset about his sister and I highlight it here is that he would do something to her.

Young people, I want you to get that when Amnon thought that he loved Tamar, what he really did is lust for Tamar.

The proof of that is right here in the second verse of the chapter.

It clearly says that what he wanted to do was something to her, watch this, not for her.

Young ladies don't miss what I'm about to say.

When a man actually loves you, he is not looking to do something to you, he wants to do something for you.

He wants to offer you, you know, gifts and love and he will do it on your time and more importantly on God's time.

When a man wants to do something to you, that is not lust, even if he has the most silver tongue.

Verse 3, but Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab.

In fact, Jonadab is actually his cousin, the son of Shimea, David's brother.

Jonadab was 1 of those slicksters that went around figuring out a way to always trick the system.

Jonadab was the dude always trying to find the homeboy hookup.

He's always the 1 figuring out, alright man, maybe we can get into the theater if somebody props the back door open.

He always had us, he always had us, an angle, always trying to find a better way to do things.

Let me say this, you will not live in purity the way God wants if you listen to the Jonadabs in your life.

The devil will raise up Jonadabs, and watch this, they will not always just be people it can be your favorite music artist is your Jonadab.

It can be your favorite person you follow on some social media platform.

Verse 4, Jonadab says why are you being the king's son lean from day to day will you not tell me and Amnon said to him I love Tamar my brother Absalom's sister Isn't it weird he saw Absalom his brother but not Tamar?

And remember that Amnon is the firstborn.

He thinks whatever he wants he's supposed to have it.

So when he realizes she's a virgin, she's his half-sister, he will probably never have her.

And so here he's whining to Jonadab about it.

And Jonadab said unto him, lay thee down on your bed and make yourself sick.

And when the father comes, when thy father comes to see you, say unto him, I pray thee let my sister Tamar come and give me meat and dress the meat in my sight that I may see it and eat it at her hand." And so he says, come up with a plan.

When you seek to be involved in relationships that God cannot bless, you are making yourself sick.
