A Costly Enterprise

Man, I don't know about you, but it's just been an exciting time being here this year.

It was really cool to see Elder Ted Wilson throw oranges.

I was Sitting over there, I had my hand up, I was trying to catch 1, but it just didn't, you know, didn't come my way.

So all you blessed folks that got oranges, hopefully you didn't eat it already, because I'd love to get a piece.

Before I begin tonight, I just want to say a big thank you to the organizers of GYC.

How many of you felt that this was such a blessing?

And then also the speakers, it has been a treat.

My dear friends, you have come to a feast and I hope that you've been fed.

Tonight I also want to say to our young people who are here, I am very proud of you.

You could be anywhere tonight, but praise God you chose to be here.

I am very proud of you for making that choice.

To those of you who are older, I am not old enough to say I'm proud of you but I'm gonna give it a try I'm proud of you too.

Before we begin I would like to offer a special word of prayer for our dear friend Luca again, that young man that Pastor Andrew Park mentioned who was in an accident.

If you don't mind, just bow your heads with me as we pray for Luca, our dear friend, 1 more time.

Father in heaven, we are petitioning your throne tonight on behalf of your son.

Lord, this young man has gone through an accident that is quite severe.

We can only think of the pain and the hurt and the ache that is in the hearts of his family members.

And we're asking dear Lord that your presence will be near so that they can find comfort and peace in you.

Lord, we also pray that you'd be with the physicians, the surgeons, the doctors, and give them wisdom.

You are the great physician who knows how to heal the sick.

And Lord, we cannot wait for the day when there'll be no more pain, no more sorrow, no more crying, and no more death.

We ask dear Lord, you keep us faithful until we see you again, is our prayer in Jesus' name, amen.

Our text, Hebrews chapter 10, Hebrews chapter 11 rather, Hebrews chapter 11, verses 24 through 26.

So please be on your A game when it comes to finding your text, your verses.

It says in Hebrews chapter 11 verse 24 through 26, by faith Moses when he became of age refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ's greater riches than the treasures in Egypt for he looked to the reward.

Lord, now we bring before you the message, and we say you preach.

Speak to us as only you can, is our prayer in Jesus' name, we all say amen.

She was barely 5 feet tall but she had the strength of an ox.

She did not have any formal education and yet at the age of 27 she made it her life mission to rescue slaves.

She was a praying woman and oftentimes when she found herself in danger she would pray these words, Lord you've delivered me out of 6 troubles.

There are many times when she traveled approximately 1, 000 miles round trip all the way from Canada to Maryland to rescue slaves.

Her practice was to rescue slaves on nights, especially nights.

And biographers tell us that she would do her rescues on a Saturday night to be exact because the Sunday papers wouldn't catch what was going on, so the slave reports would be late, and she would be far gone before they could report a missing slave.

She would sneak up to the cabins on a Saturday night, and she wouldn't knock.

As she approached the cabin, she would sing, actually.

She would sing, Go down, Moses, Way down in Egypt land, tell old Pharaoh, let my people go.

And when the slaves heard it, they would quiet down and they would tap 1 another and say, Moses is here.

And the slaves would leave with her after they heard her voice singing that song.

In her book, this wonderful writer by the name of Sarah Hopkins Bradford, she wrote about Harriet Tubman.

She talks about the book title is Harriet Tubman, the Moses of her people.

And she tells a story about a slave by the name of Joe Bailey.

And Joe Bailey was rescued via the Underground Railroad.

He was brought from Maryland all the way to Canada.

And she writes that When Joe Bailey's feet touched the soil in Canada, the man went from weeping to singing at the top of his lungs.

Friends, have you experienced freedom to the point that you can sing overjoyed at the top of your lungs without any ounce of care for anyone around you.

Joe Bailey sang glory to God and Jesus too.

Oh that's good news when a slave gets rescued.

What Harriet Tubman did could not be accomplished without the help of courageous white folks.

I read the story of a man by the name of Thomas Garrett.

Now this man is a really cool man because my good friend Pastor Garrett, his name is similar.

This wonderful gentleman Thomas Garrett, he was a Quaker and he had a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Garrett was tried twice, convicted and fined so heavily by the courts that everything he owned was taken and sold to pay the fine.

The man became homeless at the age of 61 for helping slaves escape the plantations.

When the judge threw down the gavel with a loud thud and pronounced the sentence, Thomas Garrett, standing there in the courtroom, guilty as charged, looked at the judge square in the eyes and said these words, Judge, thee hasn't left me a dollar, but I wish to say to thee and to all those in this courtroom that if anyone knows a fugitive slave who wants shelter and a friend, send him to Thomas Garrett and he will befriend him.

Sarah Hopkins Bradford went on to say, not Luther before the council at Worms was grander than this brave old man in his unswerving adherence to principle.

In those days that tried men's souls there were many men like this old Quaker and many women too who would have gone cheerfully to the fire and the stake to rescue slaves." And then she quotes Hebrews, easing or relieving the cause of suffering humanity, men and women, these, and here's her quote from the book of Hebrews, of whom the world was not worthy.

Recently while perusing through the Adventist encyclopedia, I found a statement describing our very first General Conference President, John Byington.

John Byington actually had a stop on the Underground Railroad.

It's quite possible that there are many slaves that were helped by our first General Conference president.

Actually the historians tell us that right before he became our General Conference president, before he got baptized and sent to Adventist he had a stop and he would help the slaves Adventism has always been rescuing slaves people Hebrews 11 again our text the Bible says by faith by what everybody by what everybody by faith Moses We talked about Joseph, that the fact that Joseph by faith could see.

The Bible says, by faith Moses, when he became of age, pay attention to that word, when he became of, what everybody?

No time is more significant than when a person becomes of age.

I have seen 18-year-olds waving their driver's license in the face of their sibling saying, look at me.

Don't mind the ugly picture on the thing, but you know.

I have heard 18-year-olds say, I can't wait to move out of my parents' home and get my own apartment.

And when adulthood strikes and the rent comes due, they say, adulting is hard.

I remember I was riding the bus in Philadelphia, and as I was there I was reading my Bible, And a young lady came over, she saw me reading.

I was reading the book of Daniel, actually.

And I was a young man, just became an Adventist, I was fresh in this thing, and I was on fire.

And I found out something curious in Philadelphia, that if you wanted to save a seat on the bus, carry your Bible.
