Good, but the problem was that we failed the covenants.

It wasn't the covenant that failed, it was man.

The new covenant, Jesus stepped in where we failed.

Jesus stepped in and made the covenant perfect.

Because I can't hold the covenant, Jesus can hold the covenant.

Today you will see that this letter to the Hebrews continues with many of these themes.

That's why I wanted to do 1000 foot overview of where we've been so far.

So I like to ask you guys who these people are often, different ones?

It was early 1870s, Philip Arnold and John Slack.

Philip and John appeared in San Francisco with leather bag full, stuffed full, of uncut diamonds, rubies, and sapphires.

They had discovered an immense gem field in the American West.

There were with more gems than any discovery in history.

And an independent, highly respected mining engineer inspected the site in the very remote area of Colorado and Wyoming.

The engineer declared it wonderfully rich.

The field was quickly valued at millions in the 1870s.

Major investors poured money in, eager to claim a piece of the American dream.

The greatest financial minds of that age, including the president of the Bank of California, William Rothstein, famous military officer, you'll recognize some of these names, General George McClellan, businessmen, Nathan, you might know this guy, Rothschild, and the founder of Tiffany & Co., Charles Lewis Tiffany, all invested heavily in these mines.

While the mine was on federal land, This powerful group actually bribed politicians to pass the General Mining Act, granting them access to the land.

Next, they convinced Philip and John to sell their interest for $660, 000, which is about $17.3 million today.

These initial investors then turned their mining rights into a company, and they turned around and sold stock for 10 million dollars in 1870.

You see, this was a huge business with many high-powered people involved.

But I wouldn't tell you this story, or you probably would have heard this story if there wasn't a problem, right?

Philip and John had performed the ultimate con.

They traveled to London, bought cheap, uncut, industrial-grade diamonds and low-quality rubies and sapphires, and they salted.

In other words, they scattered them across the ground, raked them in so they went down a little bit and Came back fooling everyone.

They created a dazzling, profitable-looking imitation of the true.

The fraud was exposed, not by a banker, a detective, or a jeweler, but a young geologist named Clarence King.

King was leading the US government in geological surveys of that area, and he had just been to that area, and so he smelled a rat.

King and his team raced out to this remote location, and when he inspected the ground, he didn't check how well this gem sparkled.

He noticed 2 facts that were utterly incompatible with genuine truth.

He knew that diamonds and rubies were never lying side by side.

When they dug trenches, He quickly realized that the gems only went about a shovel deep into the ground.

King's report brought the entire scheme crashing down overnight.

The investors had waste millions on an elaborate sparkling figure of the true.

John and Philip fled, they never spent 1 night in jail, and the rumor is that only 1 of them paid about $150, 000 back, total.

So today, we are gonna continue to look at Hebrews, and as we look at Hebrews 9, we will see that there was a model that was not as powerful on its own.

It couldn't save, and much like this gym field, it looked much like the real thing.

The earthly sanctuary, it pointed, it reflected to a true 1, but it lacked the power of the true 1.

Praise God that there is a sanctuary in heaven, amen?

You know, I'm not gonna give you all the notes So in your Bibles, I would recommend you keep them open to Hebrews 9 as we study and we'll go through through those verses If I can get an amen when you get to Hebrews 9, I'll know that some of you are there.

Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary.

For a tabernacle was prepared, the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary." So church, I'm gonna pause.

You just heard some descriptors of a place.

Verse 3, and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the holiest of all, which is where?

It's interesting why this is in the most holy place.

Most scholars actually believe that word for the censer is actually translated for the altar of incense.

And if you read back, it doesn't give you the altar of incense in the holy place.

So there's a weird problem there, and I think it's because it has a deeper meaning.

The incense, if you remember, was offered how often?

We had incense offered daily, and that smoke would ascend, and the curtain didn't go all the way to the ceiling, right?

So that smoke would ascend and fill the holy and the most holy place.

So in speaking, the effects of the altar of the incense was also in the most holy place.

And that's something you can study later on your own.

I think it's a great answer to think of that way, but it is interesting how it's between the both.

Behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle, which is called the holiest of all, and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold In which there were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant." Number verse 5.

And above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy Seats.

Remember above the mercy seat was God's glory, right?

Continuing, of these things, we cannot now speak in detail.

It's interesting, he's basically saying that there isn't time to talk about this all right now.

It's not the point he's trying to make for us, so we're gonna move on.
