Personal Spirituality in the Workplace

The way I've got this thing figured out now is that our whole life is a long evangelistic effort.

When you get in the army, you soon find that out.

I got in the army and as an officer, I was a physician there, you know, so I was an officer and the general, General McClure at Fort Ord, had his orientation of all officers on Sabbath.

Well, I got down to his office, and I met another man I'd never met before, Dennis from Walla Walla.

He didn't show for the office's orientation.

So we were called in, we saluted, and General McClure said, I know why you weren't there Saturday.

He said, but this was like a church service, and I was the preacher Next time you will be there, and he dismissed us.

We didn't have 1 word to say well, they try you they test you And they have again on Saturday and of course we didn't show we never heard another thing But but it's interesting how they try you So I was sent then my second year over to Taiwan's interesting how I got there the man who directed where we went was a graduate from Loma Linda, and I stopped at his Door 1 day and talked to him.

I'd like to go over there He said I'll arrange it and so I was a military advisor to the Taiwanese army We had a new lieutenant colonel come in and He was giving me a bad time He changed the staff meeting every week to Saturdays from Tuesdays And When we had an American army officer or Wife get pregnant or something.

She had to go up to be delivered in Taipei and I was in Taichung so I'd order up a plane to take us there, you know Chinese Air Force and it was interesting when I got back 1 day Sabbath or Sunday it was it was Sabbath I got there before sundown I got home I had a note under my door ordering me to appear at staff meeting now when you disobey a direct order They can ship you into the brig you know And so he would make it hard on me now the US Army has a special good deal special regulation that no matter how low the officer is, if he's a medical officer, he can order a general to the hospital for medical reasons.

So I let my fellow officers know the problem.

I said you get word back to that man If he doesn't lay off me, I'm going to order him up to Taipei to the hospital for mental observation You know what that would do with his career Well anyway you gotta live it they try you they test you By the way just after I left Taiwan.

They did send him home to Walter Reed for mental observation But but they do try you they you try you you got to live it But while I was there at Fort Ord only 19 of the 23 seventh the Abbas who went through the basic training bothered not to get trained Friday night on Sabbath.

19 did go through the Red Alert training on Sabbath.

Not only do you have to live it you have to exude it.

It's got to be in you You don't even know what's coming out every 1 of us has an atmosphere around it around us There in Taiwan There was a lady who was pregnant English lady married to an American paratrooper Well it's time for delivery I had to order out a Chinese Air Force plane to take me up from Taichung to Taipei where the hospital was Well, we got on the runway thing all revved up ready to go I Said tell the captain it's too late.

30 years later, I was giving a series of health talks at a camp meeting, Midwest camp meeting, and I had workers' meeting.

Every morning, I talked to all the ministers.

The second day I was there, a minister came up to me.

Did you ever deliver a baby on an airplane?

Now, you see, when they got out of the army, they went up to Florida, settled down, and he divorced his wife.

But the elderly man next door was a Seventh-day Adventist, and he kinda took over, helping that boy.

And 1 day the boy said to the mother you know that man next door.

He's a seventh-day Adventist She said I want to tell you something you don't know you were delivered by a seventh-day Adventist doctor Now I don't know what I ever said to that lady But I was a gung-ho and letting everybody know I was an Adventist.

I know that and They knew I was a Seventh-day Adventist and So you know that second day that man went back and got his Birth certificate with my signature on it a Picture of the airplane all the officers all their names assigned to it It was interesting got into the newspaper a big deal 30 years had gone by he was now a seventh-day Adventist minister His mother was a joined the church head of the darkest Society, okay?

Everything you do is evangelistic We have an atmosphere about us people notice it.

We might not even recognize it I Was teaching in class at Loma Linda School of Public Health Adventist philosophy on nutrition now this was only for Adventist.

You're not allowed to do that anymore Everybody's allowed to attend, but then I got by with it just for Adventist because I wanted to Go into detail on some of my feelings about board meetings How they vote whether they're mediators or not meters except a sir anyway?

It was kind of interesting there was a Chinese dietitian who got into that class Not that I missed I didn't know it But it came time for her oral examinations.

I was on her committee Who helped give the oral exam and?

Blankenship about chemists he was sharing the meeting and We had prayer and then he said now Vivian would you like something to say have something to say before we start our questioning?

She says yes, I would she said you know that class of dr.

Scharfberg's He told us the scientific information then he picked up counsels and diet foods and showed us how Ellen White said that many years ago She said you know if he'd done it the other way around I wouldn't been interested, but he started with a scientific point of view And she says I went out and bought Councils on dieting foods And when I get back to Hong Kong I'm gonna be baptized Everything we do has to do with evangelism.

That's a part of us I was the first to get students at Loma Linda University to go overseas.

I met the boy Bob Osmond son Who came to be 1 of those students he I met him at the airplane and here was my 3 or 4 page assignment Basically you are to find a village where there's malnutrition under 5 years of age Design a program to handle the problem even though you're only gonna be there 3 months.

It's got to continue till the problems handled Jane The other students all came they try to find such a place they said we don't see any people malnourished I said Bill look at that girl over there.

We finally found this village in Pueblo, a little island off of Quezon, and we got to work there.

And I got some slides here to show you, just a few minutes here.

Let's show these pictures of the Philippines.

It was politically unorganized, but the leader of the village came to our Students and they said now we're going to get all the villagers together And we want you to talk to them well.

What time do we start 08:00 now nobody had a watch in the village, so how could they tell when it was 08:00?

And then Bill Osmundson said to them, said, now look, when do we stop?

Now at the School of Public Health, they've been taught how to give lectures on health.

But what do you do when you have the whole day?

Now here's the hut we rented to start with, an old Nipa hut, you know, they have these bamboo slats on the floor and you put your garbage between them so it softs, goes down below and the pigs take care of it down there.

And of course we had to build our own house then later, but we started with this 1, okay?

We had these These people well we'd bring him in To sing songs and things like this we did that okay next They were stunted in growth We had a height weight study on them.

They were all 10 to 12 inches shorter, those kids were, than the kids from wealthy homes in the Makati district in Manila.

All they had to eat was rice, fish, coconuts, and a little cankong, swamp cabbage, to get them to the vitamin A.

And as a result of what we did, The governor of the province made a rule all schools must teach gardening I've seen a lot of Filipino young people over in the United States, and they remember going to school having to learn gardening That's because what we did okay, so we taught gardening we had to learn how to plow with a caribou.

Now, here's the house we started to build for ourself right next to a church.

Not many people coming to the church in those days next What else did we do?

Yeah Missed it Well It was a fun time over there.

The major thing we found wrong was we did stool tests.
