Alright, let's bow our heads to ask the Lord's presence.

All right, let's bow our heads for a word of prayer.

Father in Heaven, what a joy it is to be here at GYC with so many fellow believers, anxious to receive your spirit, to go out and enlighten the world so that your work can be finished and Jesus can come.

Help us to see that this is the reason why we're gathered here.

As we open your word this morning, we ask for the presence of your Holy Spirit.

Give us clarity of thought and give us also willingness of heart to receive what you have for us this morning.

We thank you Father for the privilege of prayer.

Thank you that we can come boldly to the throne of the King of the universe knowing that you incline your ear to hear us and we know Father that you have heard this prayer because we ask this in the precious name of Jesus.

Please open your Bibles with me to Galatians chapter 3, Galatians chapter 3, and we're going to read verses 13 and 14.

This is not in your handout, but you might want to write down the reference at the top of the handout.

This is going to set the stage for what we're going to discuss.

The word redeem there means to buy back by paying a price.

So Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law.

Having become a curse for us, for it is written, cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.

He bore the curse by taking our sins to the cross.

But now what I want you to notice is that his death had a purpose.

So it says, Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, for it is written, cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, that, he did this, in other words, so that, what?

The blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

It says that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the what?

Is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit related in any way to the death of Christ?

Jesus took the curse that the blessing of Abraham might come and we might receive the Spirit.

Now we want to take a look at the material I've written out pretty much what I'm going to share with you and I believe that this is foundational to anything else that we talk about this weekend.

We can't talk about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit without understanding what happened at the cross.

Now as we examine scripture we discover something very interesting And that is that you have this pattern.

And the pattern is that a sacrifice is offered and then fire falls from heaven and consumes the sacrifice as a signal that God accepted the sacrifice.

It's a pattern all throughout Scripture and basically it's the same idea that we just read from Galatians chapter 3.

Jesus was sacrificed on the cross, he bore the curse that we might receive the Spirit.

Now let's notice several biblical examples of this pattern of sacrifice, fire, sacrifice, fire.

The first of these is the first sacrifice that we find directly mentioned in the Bible.

Now I realize that there was a sacrifice before this which was the 1 where God got the lamb skins to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve.

There's no mention of a sacrifice but it is clearly hinted at.

But this is the first explicit reference.

Now the Bible doesn't tell us how God showed that he accepted Abel's sacrifice.

But the Bible does say that God had regard for Abel's sacrifice, but he did not have for Cain's.

And it's interesting to read commentators about this, you know, that don't have the light of the spirit of prophecy and really don't look at the pattern of scripture.

You know, many commentators say, well, the way that God showed that he accepted Abel's sacrifice was that the smoke of Abel's sacrifice went up, whereas the smoke of Cain's sacrifice went down.

Well the fact is there was no sacrifice by Cain in the first place.

Ellen White makes it clear how God showed that he accepted Abel's sacrifice.

Notice signs of the times February 6 1879 she says God had respect unto this sacrifice and how did he show it and fire came down from heaven and consumed it.

So how did God show that He accepted Abel's sacrifice?

By fire from heaven that consumed the sacrifice.

The pattern I want you to see is sacrifice fire.

Now let's go to our second example in scripture.

This is when the sanctuary services began in the tabernacle in the wilderness.

Once again the same pattern in Leviticus 9 verses 22 to 24, this is when the sacrificial system is going to begin, and it says in Leviticus 9 verse 22, Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, and came down from offering, notice the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings.

And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting and came out and blessed the people.

Now notice then the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people and fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar.

When all the people saw it they shouted and fell on their faces.

Sacrifices, fire, showing that God approved of the sacrifice.

When Solomon's temple, which by the way is a misnomer because it wasn't Solomon's temple, it was the Lord's temple built by Solomon, but when the temple built by Solomon was dedicated, Sacrifices were placed upon the altar and then I want you to notice what happened.

We'll come back to the 1 before that in a few moments.

It says there in Second Chronicles 7 verse 1 when Solomon had finished praying fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

Also during the period of the Hebrew monarchy which is the same period of David Solomon according to First Chronicles 21 verse 26 this is a sacrifice that was offered by David on Ornan's threshing floor we find the same pattern all over again It says there in First Chronicles 21 verse 26 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the Lord.

From heaven by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

Sacrifice, fire, God showing his approval of the sacrifice.

Now also this is true during the period of the Hebrew prophets.

Let's notice 1 example, the example of Elijah which I'm sure we're all acquainted with.

We're all acquainted with the story of Elijah.

It says here, then fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice.

Do you know when this sacrifice was offered?

The Bible says that it was at the hour of the evening sacrifice.

In other words when in the sanctuary the lamb was being sacrificed, you know morning and evening, so there's a direct relationship between the evening sacrifice and God raining fire from heaven.

So it says, then fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

Secrets of Revival and Reformation, Part 2

Okay, there's a second rock episode that we find in the Old Testament And that rock episode is found in Numbers 20 and verses 7 through 11.

Nothing complicated, no deep theological thoughts here, just simple things to understand.

God makes this truth simple, we're the ones who complicate it.

Now notice Numbers 20 and verses 7 through 11.

Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying take your rod you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together.

But now notice there's a difference in this rock episode it says speak to the rock before their eyes and it will yield its water thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock So in other words what God is saying to Moses is speak to the rock and ask the rock to give you its water.

And of course Moses at this point is quite aggravated with Israel.

He's been with them for about 40 years now, never lost his temper once.

He was really close to the Lord because there was plenty of reason for aggravation.

Ellen White says that if he had not committed this 1 sin right before he entered the promised land he would have been translated from among the living, but he had to die because of this 1 sin.

And so God tells Moses you go you struck the rock already once now You speak to the rock and the rock will give its water.

And he strikes the rock twice in his fury and this kept Moses out of the promised land.

Patriarchs and Prophets page 418 Ellen White has the deep messianic explanation she says by his rash act Moses took away the force of the lesson that God purposed to teach.

The rock, being a symbol of Christ, had been once smitten, as Christ was to be once offered.

The second time it was needful only to speak to the rock, as we have only to ask for blessings in the name of Jesus.

By the second smiting of the rock the significance of this beautiful figure of Christ was destroyed.

In other words Moses destroyed the symbolic meaning of what God wanted to teach.

You see, Jesus, according to the book of Hebrews, fell under the judgment of God how many times?

He was offered once for the sins of the people.

Time and again in Hebrews you find this theme, once, once, once for all.

So, how do we receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit today?

Notice Luke 11 and verse 13, Luke chapter 11 and verse 13.

Here Jesus explicitly says that all we need to do to receive the Holy Spirit is to ask.

He says if you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who Ask of Him.

So what do we need to do in order to receive the Holy Spirit?

Let me mention something here about the Roman Catholic Church.

Some people don't like speakers to speak about other denominations in other churches, but it's inevitable that we have to when they go astray from the truth.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that every time that the sacrifice of the Mass is offered, Jesus is offered again in sacrifice.

They actually believe that the host, that is the little wafer, is transformed or substantiated into the body of Jesus Christ.

Now its appearance is still and its taste is wafer, But by a mysterious miracle, even though it looks like a wafer and it tastes like a wafer, it's the flesh of Christ.

And the cup or the wine that the priest drinks, he's actually drinking the literal blood of Christ because in the Mass Christ is sacrificed again and again and again.

Now if Moses was excluded from the promised land for teaching that, how does God feel about a church that teaches that idea today?

It takes away from the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The death of Christ on the cross was sufficient.

It is enough for us to pray and receive the Holy Spirit.

Now let's talk a little bit about Pentecost.

So the fire and the water bear a direct relationship with the sacrifice or the offering of Jesus Christ.

Now let's talk a little bit about what happened on the day of Pentecost.

We usually begin our study of the sanctuary in the court.

But really we shouldn't begin the study of the sanctuary in the court.

We should begin the study of the sanctuary in the camp.

It's a fundamental mistake that many times is made.

You know, you say the sanctuary begins in the court at the altar of sacrifice.

You see before the sacrifice of Jesus could be accepted it was necessary for Jesus to live a perfect life.

The word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

That word dwelt can be translated tabernacled or pitched his tent.

So Jesus came and he pitched his tent in our camp and he faced all of the devil's temptations and he never sinned.

You see, the sacrifice of the lamb was not only important, the lamb when it was sacrificed had to be a perfect lamb, unblemished.

The unblemished aspect of the lamb represents the life of Christ.

But his death without his life has no value because he would be an imperfect sacrifice Are you with me?

Now the law of God demands absolute perfection, right?

Does the law say well, I'll let you get away with it the law says obey perfectly and live if you disobey me in the least particular you'll die How many of us can offer the law what the law requires?

If you raised your hand that would be the first time that you are not offering the law what it requires, because you'd be lying.

The Bible says, all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

So can any of us offer the perfection to the law that the law requires?

Now if we don't offer the law the perfection that the law requires what does the law say?

1, we can't offer the law the life that the law requires and 2, the law says as a result you have to die.

Jesus came to live the life that we should live in my place and in your place.

And he came to die the death that we should die.

The First and Last Pentecost

Father in heaven, thank you for the good lunch that we've had.

Thank you, Father, for the privilege of, with full freedoms, studying your holy word.

We realize that the days are coming when this will be done under very trying circumstances.

We thank you, Father, also for the privilege of being at GYC.

Thousands of young people with a common vision of becoming involved actively and helping in the finishing of your work on earth so that we can go home.

Father, we ask that as we study about the First Pentecost, the relationship that it bears to what Jesus is doing now and what he will soon cease doing, that your Holy Spirit will guide our thoughts and give us understanding.

We thank you for the privilege of approaching your throne boldly in prayer.

We know that you have heard us because we ask it in the precious name of Jesus.

The first thing that I would like us to take a look at is, yes, over by the door in a box, I would like us to take a look at what I call the chronology of Pentecost.

We're going to take a look at the events of the ministry of Christ from his baptism all the way down to the time that the Holy Spirit was poured out.

The first stage that I want to bring to your attention is the earthly ministry of Christ before his death.

And the purpose of the life of Jesus during these 3 and a half years was to live a perfect life that could provide for us an example but that he could also provide as a substitute for our sinful life.

So in other words in the camp of the sanctuary Jesus pitched his tent for 3 and a half years actually before that also but especially during the 3 and a half years he faced every temptation that we have ever faced or will ever face, plus much more, and he never sinned.

He developed a perfect life that he could give to us.

Then, at the very end of the 3 and a half years, on what has come to be known as Good Friday, actually it was on the 14th day of the month of Nisan, at 03:00 in the afternoon in the year 31, there were prophecies that pointed exactly to the hour, day, month, and year.

70 weeks pointed to the year and the Passover pointed to the hour, the day, and the month.

And so Jesus at 03:00 in the afternoon on Friday was sacrificed as the perfect lamb.

And he remained buried in the grave for all of the Sabbath.

He rested the Sabbath day, like he had rested from his work of creation at the very beginning.

And then of course we know, you know there was a prophecy that pointed to the fact that Jesus was going to rest in the tomb and his body would see no corruption?

Have any of you heard the sermon study that I did on the manna?

See, usually when we talk about the manna, we say, oh, the manna didn't fall on Sabbath because God wanted us to understand that we're supposed to keep the Sabbath.

But we totally lose the messianic meaning of why He wanted us to keep the Sabbath because manna did not fall on the Sabbath.

Let me just amplify this point very quickly.

What happened when the manna was picked up on Friday, or picked up rather on Wednesday and saved for Thursday?

Now let me ask you what is it that breeds worms and stinks?

But when the manna was picked up on Friday, on Sabbath, it was just as fresh as it was on Friday.

But there's more, not only Jesus in general terms, it says in John 6 51 that the bread that I shall give is my flesh which I shall give for the life of the world.

What would have happened to a normal body if a person died on Friday and his body was in the tomb on Sabbath?

But the Apostle Peter on the day of Pentecost in his sermon he said that the body of Jesus was in the tomb and it saw no corruption because he was the manna and the manna did not breed worms or stink on the Sabbath.

So in other words the reason we're supposed to keep the Sabbath is because there's a messianic explanation we keep the Sabbath because Jesus the manna rested on the Sabbath to commemorate redemption.

So There was a prophecy that indicated that he was going to rest in the tomb on Sabbath.

And his body would see no corruption like the manna did not corrupt on the Sabbath.

And then of course, early on Sunday morning, the first day of the week, Jesus resurrected.

And he went to heaven, made a very brief visit to heaven, to his father, and then he returned to the earth.

Do you know at what time of the day Jesus went to heaven to have this little visit with his father?

Because the day of Pentecost came exactly 50 days after the firstfruits were weighed before the Lord.

And the book of Acts tells us when and what hour the Holy Spirit was poured out.

It says, remember that the people started speaking in other tongues?

It's only the third hour, which is 09:00 in the morning.

Exactly 50 days after the first fruits were way before the Lord.

You know, I kind of snicker at people, you know, they talk about the prophecies of Nostradamus ambiguous you have to stretch your imagination to find any fulfillment and yet they will reject the idea that prophecy specified the exact hour day month and year of the death of Jesus.

It pointed to the exact year when he would begin his earthly ministry.

It pointed in the Feast of Unleavened Bread when he would rest in the tomb, which was the 15th of Nisan, after the Passover, and it's specified that on the next day, the first fruits, he would resurrect.

Now that's, you don't have to use your imagination.

So Jesus resurrects on the third day and then 40 days go by and Jesus is on earth with his disciples.

What is Jesus doing during those 40 days?

In Acts chapter 1 and verse 3, we're told that he spoke to his disciples about the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

That's another way of saying that Jesus explained to the disciples Bible prophecy during those 40 days.

He explained to them the prophecies that had been fulfilled in him And he explained to them what was soon going to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost.

So Jesus resurrects and then he spends 40 days on the earth speaking to his disciples about the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

And then after the 40 days we have the ascension of Christ to heaven.

Let's read it in Acts chapter 1 verses 9 through 11.

Acts chapter 1 verses 9 through 11 speaks about the ascension of Christ.

Dies on Friday, actually he's baptized in the year 27, 3 and a half years of ministry, dies on the 14th of Nisan, 03:00 in the afternoon, is the unleavened bread in the grave beginning the next day then he resurrects the day after that 40 days go by and now he ascends to heaven it says there in Acts 1 verse 9 Now when he had spoken these things, while they watched, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight.

And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven, as he went up, Behold, 2 men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?

This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw him go into heaven and then Jesus disappeared from their sight.

Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem.

And for the next 10 days, they prepared to receive the Holy Spirit, to give them power to witness.

They prayed such as they had never prayed before.

They studied Bible prophecy such as they never had studied before.

They ironed out their differences Because there was contention.

On the last trip to Jerusalem, they were discussing what cabinet posts each of them was going to have in the new government.

They placed all of their possessions at the disposal of God's work.

They were emptied of self and prepared for the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

That's what they did during those 10 days between the Ascension and when the Holy Spirit fell on the day of Pentecost.
