The Radical Prayer, Part 1

Our Father in Heaven, we thank you that you have spoken to us.

You've spoken in many ways through the prophets of old, through visions and dreams and through direct revelation.

You have spoken to us most clearly through Jesus, your Son, who came to this earth.

And it is his teaching that we want to study in this workshop.

We want to listen to the teaching of Jesus and we want to live what we learn.

And so I thank you for each person here, and I pray your blessing as we study the word of Jesus together.

The song that I want to teach you today is actually the scripture that we're going to study, and it's taken, if you have your Bible with you, it's Luke chapter 10 and verse 2, and then the bridge for the song is from John chapter 4 and verse 35.

And I am not a great singer like some of the musicians we have here, so it will sound better if you sing with me.

It's a word for word from the New King James translation of the Bible and it's called The Harvest and thank you for playing that for us.

The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few.

The harvest truly is great, But the laborers are few.

Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers.

To send out laborers into His harvest, into His harvest.

The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few.

And then from John chapter 4, do you not say?

There are still 4 months and then comes the harvest.

Behold I say to you, Lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already ripe for the harvest.

Therefore pray, therefore pray, the Lord of the harvest, To send down laborers.

Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send down laborers.

Thank you to our AV team for making that happen.

What we sang together was actually the Word of Jesus.

We're going to unpack that, to study that in this seminar over the time that we have available.

And if you have your Bible, I want you to open it to the Scripture, if you brought your phone or your iPad or some electronic copy of the Scripture.

We're going to be studying from Luke chapter 10.

In order to share with you later in this workshop about the radical prayer that Jesus asks us to pray, we first need to see the world from God's radical perspective.

Now, I grew up in the south of England, we don't have many mountains there.

I remember the first time I went to Switzerland and my mother's family was from the Bernese Oberland near Interlaken.

So, if you've been to Interlaken, if you look up from Interlaken, what can you see?

You can see the Jungfrau, you can see the Eiger, you can see the massive mountains of the Bernese Oberland.

That's beautiful to see it, but even more remarkable, if you take the train to the top, it's not the top of the Jungfrau, but it's to the saddle near the top.

If any of you have done that, you can then go to an observation deck, and you can see the mountains from a totally new perspective.

You feel like you're up on top of the world.

Seeing the world from a new perspective, that's what God wants for those who will pray the radical prayer.

And so I want you to notice in the text that we are studying, if you have your Bible, open to Luke chapter 10, how Jesus begins his teaching.

And we will begin our teaching in this first part of the workshop.

Jesus begins, and I'm reading from the New King James version, by saying to them, the harvest truly is great.

I was told that this is a time to interact.

He said to them, that he is Jesus, at least if you have a red letter edition, it shows it's Jesus.

So, Jesus had said to the 12, recorded in Matthew chapter 9, the very same words, but he just sent them out to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Now he is speaking to the 70, and he is going to send them out to every city and village he is about to go.

The 70 represent all of the nations, if you go back to Genesis chapter 10, all of the descendants of Noah.

So, they represent us going to the whole world, and to those disciples who are to go to the whole world.

Jesus says something, I have just 5 words in my English Bible, the harvest truly is great.

So, let me ask you a question now, what is the harvest that Jesus is talking about?

Well, this metaphor of the harvest is used in 2 ways in the New Testament.

You can keep your place in Luke 10, but go to Matthew chapter 13.

Jesus is speaking about sowing good seed and then an enemy comes and sows weeds in the field.

And in verse 39 of Matthew 13, Jesus says, the enemy who sowed these weeds is who?

So, 1 use of The harvest in the New Testament, the harvest is the what?

Go to Revelation chapter 14, to the 3 angels' messages of Revelation chapter 14.

And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud.

So the angel is speaking to the Son of Man on the cloud and says to the Son of Man, thrust in your sickle and reap, for the time has come for you to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

So, he who sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

This is also speaking about the harvest at the end of the age.

Jesus, the 1 seated on the throne who has this sickle.

So, you've got Jesus and the angels as the reapers, and the harvest is the judgment at the end of the age.

Reaching Human Hearts, Part 1

Now, Father in heaven, I thank you so much for giving us time and energy to meet like this.

Now, I pray, Father, that you will guide us, that you will lead us with your Holy Spirit.

Teach us that we might be more efficient and encouraged and inspired to reach our friends on a personal level.

I pray that we will be more efficient in especially reaching people's hearts.

Hearts know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it especially, Father.

Now I pray that you will guide us and protect us from sickness and keep up our health during this time we have together.

We expect a blessing, Father, because we give our time and our energy right now and we expect you to use it for your glory.

So in this first meeting here we will start to discuss some practical aspects of how to meet people.

It's not that easy to try to talk about your faith with others.

And we will talk about the first initial meeting with friends, how to...

Some tips and practical principles that have helped me in dealing with people, how to get a connection with them, and also to bring the conversation from just everyday stuff into more spiritual things and try to get an interest from our friends in our faith, the Bible and our God.

And we will have 1 exercise during this first meeting also.

I will start by reading something that has encouraged me.

It's a quote from the Minister of Healing, page 143.

It describes Christ's method of reaching people and it says, Minister of Healing, page 143, it says, Christ's method alone will give true success in reaching people.

The Savior mingled with men as 1 who desired their good.

He showed his sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence.

It says here very clear that there is 1 method that works, that gives true success in reaching people.

Now we might have apparent success, we might have numbers, we might have apparent success, but here she says true success will come from, and she describes, mingling with people as someone who desire their good.

Show sympathy for them and minister to their needs and win their confidence.

And then, she says, we can ask them to follow Christ.

Now this will be our main message this first meeting.

We will expand on this and talk about these principles in this passage.

Now when it comes to meeting people, mingle with them, decide they're good.

There's 1 thing to be, there's 1 chair over here and some down there in the corner I find some.

It is not always the easiest thing to show someone that my intentions are good, right?

Now I might have good motives of something I say or something I do, and sometimes we tend to, as Christians, we tend to settle with that, that we have good intentions.

We tend to say, well I had good motivations in what I did, so it's okay to do anything.

Sometimes we tend to have this idea, especially in witnessing and other things, that my motivations are the important thing, my intentions are the important thing.

And even though that is true, it is important as we see here, Christ mingled with the men as 1 who desired their good.

We need to have that desire, that earnest desire that we want people's best, right?

It's an other thing to make our friends and people that we try to witness to, to understand those motivations that we have.

I used to say this, when it comes to relationships, The thing more important to be able to control, if I would say that, is the perceptions of the 1 that you're talking with rather than your own intentions.

You know, how I perceive something, right?

So what I'm trying to say is when you meet people, it's more important, well you will have your motivations there and hopefully they are good, right?

You have good reasons for why we go out and try to witness.

But more important is that you know what kind of perception and you try to control the perception that the person that you're witnessing to has about the interaction.

So in a practical way, I might come up to someone, or rather I go to a door, okay?

Let's take this thing that happened to me.

So we knocked on a door and I was thinking I need to be really really joyful and happy to make sure that this person knows what's happening.

I was glad to be out there doing the work of God.

I had my motivations on the right place, right?

So I came up there, I knocked at the door, we knocked at the door, and someone opened a lady and she stared at us with these dark angry eyes.

She was just looking at us and before we had a chance to say anything she started to scream.

She started to scream and she said, ëWhat are you doing here?

You know that you believe a lie and my church is the right church?

And she started to yell and scream and all of these things.

And in her expressions it came out, I could understand that she believed that I was Jehovah's Witness.

Now that is perceptions, do you follow me?

She thinks I'm something that I'm not, do you follow me?

This is just 1 event to illustrate the perception ID.

Now another thing is I knocked at another door.

I remember we were out doing Bible work again.

I was training some friends and we were going out there and I was trying to show how I meet people at the door, how to talk with them and so on.

So I was kind of alert on everything that happened.

I was thinking I need to answer quick and I need to give and encourage my friends.

So this was several years ago and we knocked at 1 door and something similar happens.

A lady again opens the door and she looks at us and she says, are you Jehovah's Witness?

Okay, and I was like, directly I said, oh no, no, no, we're not Jehovah's Witness, that's not us, okay, like kind of an excuse.

Now and she says, well, oh that's sad because I am.

So what I'm trying to say is that from situation to situation, we need to understand, read people and understand where they come from.

That is trying to understand their perceptions and try to help them to have the right perceptions on what occurs and what happens in our relationship.

So that's my first tip of trying to understand.

You will have your motivations right, but more important than motivations and your intentions is the other person's perceptions, right?

That's the first practical tip that I share.

Now we can do that in many different ways.

In order for us to help someone of getting a good experience with our discourse, with our relationship, our meeting, wherever we are, at a door, at the street, in our family gathering, when we try to witness to someone in our family that is not sharing the same faith with us, or other people, our friends in school or work and so on.

I will share just some tips of practical things of what have helped me during these years.

Number 1, try to understand their current need, right?

Ellen White said that Christ mingled with men as someone that decided their good.

He showed his sympathy for them and he ministered to their needs.

In order to win people's confidence in relationship, A huge help is to see a current need with your friend, with your family, with someone you meet and try to meet that, try to satisfy that need or whatever it is.

Might be a question, might be a mental, physical, health thing.

Whatever it is, try to understand where these people are right now and try to meet them.

This can be achieved by another principle and that is very important.

We often think when we talk about personal witnessing, we often think that that means that we need to talk a lot, right?

Health Evangelism, Part 1

Okay, so welcome to those of you that have found your way to this workshop.

The topic, as you've seen in your program, it is about medical missionary work or health evangelism.

We're going to have 3 different sequences.

So when you ask about that, we'll have today and then tomorrow and then on Sunday or is it Sunday?

Anyways, we'll have 3 sequences and it will all be in under the topic of health evangelism.

The first 1 I called Christ's method alone and then the second 1 the health work in Advent history and then the third 1 is the basics or the medical missionary work and then in the end we're going to do brainstorming to think about and talk about how we can apply these principles in our own life and not just in our own life, but how we can also apply it in our situation in life.

How we can actually take these principles and run with them and be medical missionaries.

So Before we go into the topic for tonight, we'll have a word of prayer together.

I guess for those of you that want, we can kneel down.

Dear Heavenly Father, we just want to praise you and thank you that we have the possibility to be here at Impact Scandinavia.

It has been such a blessing so far, and I think we all really rejoice in the fact that you are raising up an army of young people all over the planet in different parts of this world that have a zeal and a passion to share you with those around them.

And Lord, you place this burden in our hearts.

We do want to reach out to humanity and there are so many ways in which we can do that.

And yet you have given us a way that is effective, 1 that is basically following in your footsteps, learning from your example.

And I just want to pray, Lord, that during these sessions that we're going to spend together, that you will inspire us with your Holy Spirit that we may learn from you.

And Lord, I pray that, humble as I am, that you will just use me as a tool, that you will use me as a channel, that you will use me to share and convey some of these things that have been such a blessing to myself and I pray that your presence may be here that your spirit will inspire us and that we may have attention And I also want to pray a lot and praise and thank you for the Holy Sabbath hours that has arrived, this time that in a special way we can spend together with you in your presence and we pray that you will sanctify us, that you will make us holy, that we can truly be, that we can truly experience the sanctity of the Sabbath and have an experience with you.

So we are at a youth conference, and we are at a youth conference where we have a special goal and that is that we want to be equipped to reach out to other people with the gospel.

We have a burden in our hearts that we want to reach out to people that do not know Christ and do not know his saving power.

Next, we have a whole seminar that is dedicated to health evangelism.

I guess the first question that we would ask ourselves is, what is the relation between health and evangelism?

Since we're so few, I think we can also have an interactive session that we can share with each other.

What are your thoughts about the relationship between health and evangelism?

Health and the gospel, what is the relationship between the 2?

1 is that the gospel or evangelism is to restore the image of God in man, the character The character of God in man and the character is developed in the mind, which is supplied by blood.

And the better the quality of blood you have, the clearer can you think and develop, and the better can you develop this image of God.

Yes, maybe in addition or similar is that God wants the best for us spiritually, but that also includes that we are healthy and are feeling well in our bodies.

So I think he is interested in our health, both spiritually and mentally and physically.

And therefore I think he wants us to learn about that.

And then if We can reach people by telling them theological truths.

We can also reach them by telling them how to live a better life and then show God's love in that way because God wants them to be healthy.

Everyone is interested to have a healthy life.

Many persons outside our church are interested in this field.

Working with the health method, we can make them as friends and after that we will present the gospel.

Did you read the quotes that I had for the seminar description.

It was basically your words saying that Christ has a method, and the way that he reached people was basically by gaining their trust and showing that he had an interest in them, And then afterwards he would call them to follow him.

I think you could all be seminar presenters here.

So just some of the points that I put up here.

And that is, and maybe we can turn to 1 Corinthians 6 and verse 19 and 20.

And of course these verses are very familiar to us and yet they are profound.

And there it says, or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own.

For you are bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's." And I put this up as the first point because when we think about our bodies, they don't even belong to ourselves, it is actually God's property.

He has bought us, he has created us, so in that sense we belong to Him and when we fell away from Him, He has also redeemed us.

So in a double sense we do belong to God.

And that's why even the body that He has given us, the mind that He has given us, they are not their own.

And in that sense, we are responsible to take care of the property that He has given to us.

So we are called to be stewards of this wonderful body, this wonderful mind that God has given to us.

And I found 1 quote that I really like from, it's actually from the first vision that Elmwalt received on health reform.

And we're going to look more at that tomorrow when we're going into the history of the health work in the Advent history.

And we're going to look at the progression.

But in this first vision she's also mentioning this very fact that we have a responsibility for these faculties, for this body that God has given to us.

And it says here that, the body which God calls his temple should be preserved in a healthy condition as possible.

Many act as though they had a right to treat their own bodies as they please.

And maybe you heard people saying that, you know, But it's my body, I can do as I want.

If they're smoking or something and you want to share something with them, it's like, it's none of your business.

They do not realize that God has claims upon them.

They are required to glorify him in their bodies and spirits which are his.

While they give themselves up to gratification or unhealthy appetites and thus bring disease upon themselves, they cannot render to God acceptable service.

They cannot weigh the evidences or truth and comprehend the requirements of God.

And I think that is also coming back to what Joachim was sharing in the beginning, how that health is not just about, you know, sometimes we think about health as, sure, you know, the statistics show that the Adventists, they are living a few years longer than other people, which is true, because in general, we have received some precious light.
