The Crisis

We have a serious topic to discuss this morning, and so I'd like to pray.

And actually, I'd like to invite whoever would like to, to kneel in prayer with me.

Lord, too often, I believe that we come before you and we're, in reality, we need to come before you on our knees.

Lord, You have said that You can lift our burdens.

And so I ask that in this special moment, that Your divinity will come into this place, that we will have a sense of the holiness of God.

Please, Lord, as we look at the life of Christ, I ask that we will see the Jesus we need, the Jesus who came like us.

I pray for your Holy Spirit to be here now.

Last night we finished discussing that latter part of Genesis 3.

We'd seen the sacrificial, the very first sacrifice take place, the very first death, the very first atonement.

Through the ages Satan has studied this very topic.

He spent years, thousands of years, millennia's looking and studying the sacrificial system.

Satan watched in every regard how this thing was to represent a coming savior.

Most people don't understand the sacrifice their very first time.

And so he looked at the devotion of the people who would carry on this sacrificial system, whether it was Abraham, whether it was the Israelites, whether it would be David in the future, and he saw the shedding of this blood for a victim, and it caused him great uneasiness, somebody once wrote.

To him, this ceremony was clothed in mystery.

The great work of redemption would be carried out only by this Redeemer coming and taking the place of fallen man.

And so we look, we will look at who Jesus saw himself to be.

I'd like to invite you to turn with me to Luke 2.

We have this instance here where Jesus, at a very young age, 12 years in fact, very young age, is in the temple.

The story is probably very familiar to you.

He'd been there for 3 days and Mary and Joseph have traveled on and they looked around, where is Jesus?

You know, have you ever wondered where is Jesus?

And so they were on this journey, and they realized Jesus wasn't with them, and so they came back to the temple, and they saw Jesus there.

And they saw this child conversing with these scholars, with these theologians, with these doctors and these lawyers.

And they were confounded, they were astounded by the ability of Jesus to answer their questions.

I don't know about you, but when I was 12 years old, that was so not happening.

But here was Jesus at 12 years old before them, and he's able to answer their questions.

You know, I can imagine them saying, hey, what do you think about this?

And so finally the mother comes to Jesus.

She says in verse 48, and when they saw him, they were amazed.

And his mother said to him, son, Why did you do this to us?

Behold thy father and I we were looking for you and we were sorrowing in our heart and how does Jesus respond?

Must I not be about my father's business?

Mary was saying, Me, I, Mary, and Joseph, your father, were looking for you.

And Jesus responded and said, I was doing my father's business.

He began to realize while he saw they were there for Passover and as they saw this sacrificial system take place, he began to realize.

1 person describes that there was an awakening in his heart about who he was and what he was all about.

And so Jesus began to realize who he was, why he was on this earth.

12 years old to come to that realization.

Some people, they're like 50, never realized it.

Jesus realized this very early on, 12 years old.

And can you imagine for the next 18 years, he studied this very topic.

I can imagine Jesus reciting the scriptures growing up, and realizing as he's reading Isaiah 53, that he realized, this is who I am.

1 of my favorite books, if you've never read, you must read, man.

Talking about this very chapter, she says, it would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in the contemplation of the life of Christ.

And let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones.

As we thus dwell upon his great sacrifice for us, Our confidence in Him will be more constant.

Our love for Him will be quickened, and we will be more deeply imbued with His Spirit.

If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross.

I would like to take you through a study that has meant so much to me.

It was 1 of the most studied efforts of Satan to try to divert the mission of Christ.

So please turn with me and your Bibles to Matthew chapter 3.

Somebody once told me success is in the details.

Jesus baptized verse 16 He went when he was baptized went straight up out of the water and low the heavens were open unto him And he heard a voice saying this is my beloved son in whom I am well, please this is an amazing declaration Jesus heard the very voice of God, you are my child, you are my son.

So that ever in the future, come what may, you can know you heard the voice of God speaking directly to you.

The glory that rested upon Christ is the same pledge that rests upon us when we are baptized when we come into that state Where we say Lord I give you my life It's the same state It tells us that there is power in what Christ can do for us.

The Savior was there, he heard this, and you know who else was there?

And I can imagine the emotions of Satan rising up and being like Okay, it's time man.

I gotta go and do what I've been waiting to do.

He knew Jesus was gonna come The baptismal scene aroused the most intense hatred in this individual He knew that for certainty that if he could not overcome Christ, he himself would be overcome.

And so Satan was trying everything he could to try to divert the mission of Christ.

The scene of trial with Christ in the wilderness, 1 person writes, is the foundation of the plan of salvation.

And it gives the fallen man the key whereby he, in Christ's name, may overcome.

So we are going to spend this time looking at the temptation of Christ in the wilderness.

The Bible says in verse 1 of chapter 4, and then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
