Salvation and the Sanctuary

1 The Sanctuary Prayer

My contact with the sanctuary took place when I was 9 years old.

She embraced the message and I found myself going to the Adventist Church.

And I was in the Glendale City Church, I remember as a boy, 9 years old, going there and they were having a VBS, and the VBS was on the sanctuary.

And I haven't seen too many, in fact, I don't think I've seen any since that VBS, but I remember somebody did a lot of work on the crafts, and 1 of the crafts was the Ark of the Covenant, and they actually had a wooden cutout there of the 10 Commandments with a Xerox copy of the Law of God glued to it.

Now, when I was growing up, my mother taught us that the Bible was holy.

And she taught us that the Law of God was holy.

Now as Catholics, we didn't read our Bible.

But we knew it was holy, we didn't read it because the priest told us that we wouldn't understand it.

Yet the Bible held a prominent place in our home.

And I remember as a boy when those 10 commandments, I was holding them in my hand, I remember how odd I was because I was holding a document, now I'm 9 years old, and yet I understood that the universe was governed by that document I held in my hand at 9.

And I remember I was so impressed by this that I was actually holding God's law in my hand.

And so I think the sanctuary left its impression in my life.

Now for reasons that fall outside the scope of our gathering here, I walked away from the Lord through a misunderstanding.

And I wasn't at the church too long before the issue of the sanctuary, I encountered that.

There were those that said it was important and others that said it wasn't.

There were those that said it was real and others said that it isn't.

And I decided to do something very unusual.

I decided to study the matter out for myself.

And when I did, I discovered that it is not only real, it's extremely important to us.

And I discovered something very interesting, that you really can't understand the Bible very well unless you understand the sanctuary.

For the simple fact that the Bible is immersed in sanctuary terminology.

And the Bible writer assumes that the reader understands the sanctuary.

And so tonight I'm going to be sharing with you some of the things that I have come to know about the sanctuary.

And this isn't going to be a blue means this and gold means that presentation.

It's going to be, I seek for a practical 1.

In many of the presentations listened to, and there's nothing wrong with that, I found those things very interesting, but I was struggling with sin.

And I wanted to know how this information was going to help me.

And so that's what I hope to do this evening.

I want to share with you a few quotes though before we get into our presentation.

The first comes to us from the Great Controversy, page 488.

Actually both of them do, of the 3 quotes I'll be sharing.

And here we read, the sanctuary in heaven is the what?

The very center of Christ's work in behalf of man.

It concerns every soul living upon the earth.

It opens to view the plan of redemption, bringing us down to the very close of time and revealing the triumphant issue of the contest between righteousness and sin.

It is of the utmost importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects and to be able to give an answer to everyone that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them.

If you want hope, you're going to find it in the sanctuary.

And the very center of activity in heaven, in your salvation and mine, is centered there.

And so this is something that needs to draw our attention.

And in the next paragraph, it brings it out even more clearly.

The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God.

All need a knowledge for themselves of the position and work of the great high priest.

I want to share something with you about Ellen White's writings.

You know why she had such a huge vocabulary?

Because she struggled for precision in her writings.

Ellen White classified exaggeration as lying.

So she struggled for precision and so when she says here impossible, it's not an exaggeration.

Otherwise it would be impossible for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God desires them to fill.

And so I hope that through our presentation, normally this presentation I do it 6 or 7 series so we're compacting it here, will strengthen your faith and it will encourage you.

And so I think David summed it up best in Psalm 77 13 when he said, your way O God is where?

David was a student of the sanctuary and there he found hope.

We all know about his fall from from grace and it was in the sanctuary that he found hope and a Savior that would forgive and cleanse him.

And so in the presentations that I'll be addressing this weekend, we'll be looking at 4 things.

First, we'll look at the sanctuary as a model for prayer.

Were you aware that the sanctuary actually teaches us how to pray and what to pray for?

The next thing we're gonna look at tomorrow during the worship service is the daily today and that the sanctuary teaches us how to walk with Jesus.

And we're going to learn there that the sanctuary teaches us how to have victory over the power of sin in our lives.

The third thing we'll look at in the afternoon is the good news of the judgment.

You know, people, it's very interesting, we as Seventh-day Adventists, we can say that October 22, 1844, the judgment began, and then we don't know much beyond that.

But we're gonna take a look at the components of the judgment, and what we're gonna learn is that it is good news.

Now, many of us, when we think of the judgment, we think of it as a very fearful event.

We're going to discover that there is a fearful event, but it's not God that we're to fear.

In fact, we're going to learn it's not even the devil.

We're going to find out what the fear factor actually is, but it's not in God.

And you're going to find that presentation very hopeful and informative.

And then the last 1, I've entitled it, Why Jesus Waits.

Were you aware that the sanctuary actually explains the reason for the delay in the second coming?

So with that introduction, I would like to begin with a word of prayer.

If you'll bow your heads, I would like to kneel.

Father, I am so thankful for the rich privilege that you have bestowed upon me this evening to present this profound and beautiful subject.

Lord, we are grateful so much for the Sabbath you have given to us, a reminder not only that you are a creator, but also our Redeemer.

And Father, this evening As we gather in this room, we invite your presence.

Lord thank you for your dear son that you gave so that we could have life in you.

We ask Lord Jesus, please for your presence.

Wash us in that precious blood and cover us in your righteousness.

We ask, Father, this evening for your bright shining angels to encompass this room and to shut us into your presence.

Father, we know that this message is important to us.

You designed it, you created it for us to understand how you plan to separate us from sin, to redeem us, to take us home.

Lord, you know the feeble instrument that you have to work with this evening.

And so Lord, I present myself to you that you will speak through me this evening and that all here will hear your voice.

Now, Father, I don't know what's taking place in the hearts of the dear people in this room, but you do.

I don't know what they need to hear, but you do.

And so I pray that each 1 will receive the blessing that you desire to give to them this evening.

I thank you for this so much and ask it all in Jesus precious name.

The Lord gave the sanctuary to the children of Israel as a mechanism of instruction so that they would understand how God was going to deal with the sin problem.

2 The Daily, Today

Last night, I opened up just by setting a framework that we're going to be building on, on the sanctuary.

The daily began with the morning sacrifice at the altar.

The priest washed his hands and feet, preparing him for service, always making sure that there was oil in the menorah and the bread of presence was there, and putting the incense on the golden altar.

When the high priest came in to the Most Holy, it was known as the yearly.

But the daily is what we talked about last night and we did it through prayer.

The sanctuary is a fascination for me as I mentioned because it was given to us by God to understand the plan of salvation.

The sanctuary reveals to us that the plan of salvation is broken into 3 parts.

The outer court reveals to us justification, the holy place, sanctification, and the most holy, glorification.

The outer court is teaching us how to become a Christian, and the Holy and the Most Holy, how to remain 1.

The outer court teaches us victory over the record of sin.

The Holy Place teaches us victory over the power of sin, and the Most Holy teaches us victory over the presence of sin.

And this is, as I mentioned to you, an interest to me.

I shared with you last night, by the way, I just want to share this 1 thing.

Do we have any Glendale Academy graduates here today?

I don't know if we have any La Sierians here with us today as well.

So the century reveals to us this process.

I shared with you that The only interest was on the east side.

We all know that the competing religion of the day was sun worship.

And so God did not want his people facing the east, so they had to put their backs to the east to face west.

When Adam and Eve were expelled from the garden, they went east.

And so the sanctuary reveals to us that process to come back.

And it will end on the Day of Atonement, the Day of At-One-ment, when the Creator and the creation are reunited.

And I believe that day is closer than we think.

I want to begin with a word of prayer, And I'm going to ask you to do 3 things.

1, I'm going to ask you to kneel with me before the Master.

2, I will ask at 1 point, I'm going to give you a moment of silence to pray for me and for yourselves.

Most kind and gracious Father, we thank you so much Lord for the incredible gift you gave to us and your son.

And Father You have illustrated for us Your plan to redeem us through this simple structure, truths so deep and so incredibly sublime, Father, that it will take all eternity and yet we'll never reach the bottom But father there is an understanding that we must have if we're going to be ready to meet you when you come Father I I thank you for that precious blood.

I pray that it'll be applied to us now, and that your righteousness will cover us, so that this humble room will be a sanctuary, where your presence can dwell.

We pray, Lord, that you will shut us in now, in that secret place of the Most High, that this hour now will be yours.

Father, I pray, you know the instrument you have to work with?

I am pleading with you that self will be hidden Christ and that only Jesus will be heard.

No 1 has come here to listen to a man, but to listen to Jesus, and that's what we want to hear.

And so, Lord, I've given to each an opportunity now, Father, to pray for this instrument, but also for themselves, so that we will be ready to hear what you want to say.

Lord, we thank you for the privilege of approaching you, and you have said that when we ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that you will do just that.

And so we are requesting now for a double outpouring.

The sanctuary reveals to us God's plan to save us, and it begins with the death of the Son of God.

This tells us quite eloquently that God is very serious about dealing with sin.

In fact, when the angel announced the birth of Christ, or the pregnancy of Mary, He said to her, and it's recorded in Matthew 121, and she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name, for he will save his people from.

That's very significant, from, and not in.

There is confusion today regarding the work of Christ and this issue of sin.

There are those that teach that God will give victory to his people prior to the coming of Jesus and others who say that his people will continue to sin up to the second coming.

And we have to ask ourselves, what are we saying when we say that we'll be sinning up to the second coming?

It's interesting to note, we must consider that when the angels of heaven, sin is rebellion.

And when the angels in heaven rebelled, they were expelled.

Is it possible for us to go into heaven that way?

Today we're going to be looking at the daily, not so much from the standpoint of what the priesthood did, but in a practical sense.

What does it look like today in my life and in yours?

That's what I want to know, and that's what we'll be looking at today.

Question number 1, what is, and by the way, the format I use is Q&A.

As a teacher, I find this easiest for me.

But not only that, but it gives you something later to study and to share.

What is God's will concerning His people?

First Thessalonians 4, 3 and 4 says to us, for this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you should abstain from sexual immorality, that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and what?

You see, God has set us aside for holy use.

Before we come to Jesus, before we invite Jesus in our life, we are anything but holy.

And as we go through life, We are pretty much the architects of our own lives.

We decide what we do, who we do it with, when we do it, where we go.

We decide how we're gonna dress, what we're gonna eat.

But when we give our lives to the Lord Jesus, we are inviting Him to sit upon the throne of our life and to guide us.

And so in our hearts, that throne, the direction that we go is determined by who's sitting on that throne.

This is extremely important because when we ask Christ into our life, there is a change in our mindset and there is now a desire to surrender the will to God.

But that certainly doesn't mean it's going to be an easy task.

It's about allowing God to work in the repentant sinner.

You know, I often hear people say, I'm going to share with you a pet peeve of mine, and I realize it's a matter of semantics, but stay with me, I think you'll understand where I'm driving at.

But people often say that God accepts me just the way I am, and I humbly submit to you that that's actually not true.

God receives me just the way I am, but loves me too much to leave me there.

3 The Good News of the Judgment

Well, in this session, we're going to take a look at the good news of the judgment.

And for many, the subject is anything but good news.

Even for Adventists, it is something that strikes fear.

And for most of us, outside of October 22, 1844, the investigative judgment began, the judgment is a mystery to us, as to what it's about, and of course it brings fear.

There's another presentation that I make that it's not, I didn't have time to put it in here, but what I did 1 day is I just went through Scripture and the Spirit of Prophecy and hit the highlights and just went through and in 1 sweeping motion looked at the 3 phases of the judgment.

I did it because of a discussion I was hearing in the office and something didn't ring right about that.

I wanted to see what inspiration in the word and in spirit prophecy had to say.

And 2, how careful he is to protect our power of choice.

I marveled as Those 2 things rose to the surface.

What I am finding is that the more time I spend in getting to know him, the more I love him.

It's the only way out of our predicament.

It's hard to trust someone you don't know.

It is all important for us to get him to know who he is.

What I'd like to do as we get started is I'd like to just kind of read the opening paragraph to our study because I think it does a real good job of creating for us the framework for our presentation.

Are there some studies back there for them?

Oh, we do, perfect, somebody already thought ahead.

Before I do, though We're gonna have 2 sessions this afternoon and We need all the help we can get from the Lord.

And I believe that, I think sometimes we offend Him without meaning to.

And I always feel that in a service in which we're asking for his presence whenever possible, I feel like we ought to kneel.

To humble ourselves before him, it's a recognition of our need for him.

Father we come to you grateful for the love that you have demonstrated to us already in your son and really in the in the beauties that yet remain on this planet that you have given to us day by day.

We thank you Lord for the things you're teaching us, that the sanctuary father reveals the plan of salvation, how you intend to save us and how we need to understand this so that we can intelligently cooperate with you.

We're grateful father for the reminder that It's only by beholding the Lamb of God that the sin in our lives can be taken away.

And Lord, you reminded us today that it is a daily experience.

It's not optional anymore than breathing is for those who wish to live.

Our only hope is in Jesus and in listening and following his careful and loving directives for each 1.

And Lord, as we gather together here, we're going to take a look at the judgment, Father, that is taking place.

We're going to be looking at the mechanics.

Father, I pray that you will anoint my lips.

Touch them, Lord, with that coal from off the altar.

I pray, Lord, to be your instrument, the tool in your hand.

I pray you'll bring to my mind the illustrations that you want me to present.

Before this world was created, you knew we would be in this room.

You know the struggles in the lives, you know the questions, you know the heartaches.

There's no way I can reach this crowd, and in reality not even 1.

But I pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that each 1 will hear what they need to hear.

And Father, I pray that after you have visited us and blessed us, I pray that all the accolades will be laid at the feet of Jesus and not this feeble, erring mortal.

I pray that you will hide this instrument behind the cross, that Christ will be not only lifted up, but rightly represented, I pray.

Thank you for your goodness, dear God, and now prepare our hearts to hear thy voice.

Again, if you'll take out your papers, I'm going to read the introductory paragraphs to lay the groundwork for us and our study today.
