Healing from the Web?

As we did in the first session, we have a short 2 or 3 minute devotional before we begin.

It's been said that a lawyer sees men at their worst, and a minister sees men at their best, but a doctor sees men as they really are.

And of course the duty of every healthcare practitioner we're in the business of helping people, healing people, comforting people, giving them release.

And the judgment that patients make of their healthcare provider is not only determined by the quality of care that you give and your diagnosis, but also the treatment they get in the front office and the business office.

Because there's a mix up in insurance, sometimes we don't pay our bills straight away because we think it's covered and it's kind of a bit of a shock to get a letter from the collections department.

And if you happen to be out of town, that could turn into a summons to a court, which happened to my wife recently after she got in a road accident that she had nothing to do with.

Somebody rammed her in the rear without her knowing.

And it doesn't give you a very good taste when the business office or even the front office.

1 time I was leaning on the counter and I was told to take my weight off that because it would bend and buckle.

So what I'm saying is sometimes as a healthcare practitioner, while you're giving good quality back there in your cell, room, whatever, what's happening out the front might also influence how people feel and maybe even their response to your treatment.

And also the relationship you have with people.

The best doctors that I've had over the years are people who know me beyond a symptom.

And they ask me, you know, How was the game the other day?

People, like we said in our earlier devotional, people want to be treated like individuals, not just as a clinical case.

So we need to relate to them in a positive way so that our therapeutic intervention can be as highly productive as possible.

Father in heaven, we thank you again for another chance to open the book of science and learn some things.

Help us to be careful as to the sources we go to.

Help us also in our daily ministry to reach out to students and patients and friends, wherever our ministry reaches, that we might treat people with human dignity and as you would have us, relate to people and help us to be careful about the front office and those that work with us because we're a team and it's the team which implements therapy, not just a person.

And we thank you for hearing our prayer in Jesus name.

Okay, so we're gonna get healing from the web.

We used to hear that from students, you know, but we don't tend to hear it anymore.

Oh, I got it from the web, it must be true.

Okay, I don't know why it's not working, it's turned off.

Okay, so every day, every day, we're bombarded with all kinds of things, a memory for miraculous cures, whatever.

And people are spending millions of dollars searching for wellness, buying pills, gadgets, gizmos, whatever.

Searching for a better body, searching for better health, whatever.

We have colonic cleansing that's popular.

A few years ago it was goji juice, ambritose, glyconutrients, barley, green, whatever.

Now some of these things work, some of them don't work, and some of them really, well, as I say here, some of them are harmless, except what they do for your wallet, and some of them are dangerous.

But in many cases, the hype outruns the reality.

And we need as Adventist leaders of the community, as healthcare professionals are, we need to be careful what we're involved with and we need to help church members and others to make decent and proper decisions.

Okay, we're just gonna run through a few of them and then give you some resources and go from there.

Okay, number 1, superfood, the acai berry from Brazil, from a palm tree, supposed to cleanse you of all harmful toxins and boost your metabolism and just melt pounds away.

Makes great slushies, makes great smoothies, makes great all kinds of things, they even have it even coated now with dark chocolate, all kinds of things.

The Federal Trade Commission says that the claims are utterly false, that there is no supporting evidence for these things to help you lose weight, even though the web is full of all sorts of enticements.

And the sad thing is that millions of dollars have been spent, People's credit cards have been billed for products that haven't delivered what was claimed for them.

So you have these wonderful before and after pictures.

Okay, after just 1 month on these special weight loss products made from assay berry, we were able to lose 35 pounds and you have all these wonderful, wonderful pictures.

And then you have the product called Sensor.

You sprinkle it on your food, you eat what you like, and you lose weight.

These flavored, scented starch crystals, which trick you to making you feel that you're full.

And in reality, there's no peer reviewed study to show that these things work.

Now, Last time we showed, last lecture, we showed you this picture here and we showed you how the blue map has become red as the country has become more and more struggling with the problem of eating too much and exercising too little.

And part of the problem is the golden arches, which Garrison Keeler very aptly said that the more frequently you walk under those golden arches, the sooner you'll reach the pearly gates.

Now, he could do with a lesson in theology, but certainly he's got it right when it comes to nutrition, because This is 1 of the major causes, the stuff that they push.

Typically, we find that the average serving size has increased.

In fact, if you go back, I've just forgotten the name of the book, it's in the 17th, the cookbook, it's in the 17th edition right now and if you go back to the first edition and you compare the serving sizes that were recommended in that with the serving sizes in the present 1, you'll see that there's about a 15 to 20% difference.

Serving sizes are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

And the average beverage serving has increased.

I went to Walmart a couple of years ago to get some 8-ounce cups for a party we were having at Andrews.

I guess I'm from a different generation or a different planet.

But I finally found 1 of the workers there and asked him.

We have 16 and 20, or 24, whatever it was.

So I learned right there that 8 ounces a thing of the past, I guess, but bigger portions mean bigger body distortions.

We've no longer participating in sports, we're watching the sports and even when we go to the fitness club we haven't even got it right.

I mean how many of you would realise looking at this that each 1 of these is 50% bigger than the previous 1.

And when you look at it here it's obvious, it's a no brainer, you can see it.

We're very good judges of things upwards, but outwards, width-wise, it's very deceiving.

And so you think you're buying a modest amount and you eat it when in actual fact you're getting maybe twice as much.

And even the label on the front, if it's scarcely populated with a few items, people will eat less.

But if it's crowded with many chips or whatever is in the box, then people will tend to eat more.

This was a research that was done in Europe with 88 college students with these M&Ms and this bowl and this bowl contain exactly the same number of M&Ms and yet when they were given to students they took a hundred and 29 percent more from this 1 than from that 1 because the bowl is bigger okay when these were compared there was not much difference so it's not what's in the bowl it's how big the bowl is So your serving sizes need to be diminished.

You go to a restaurant now and the plate is like, did I bring my whole extended family or what?

We hear a lot about, well, we shouldn't mix fruits with protein foods because the body can't digest these things.

Well can carbohydrates and proteins be handled together?

Let me show you something, I chose a legume, a fruit, a vegetable, a grain.

And then I wrote down from food composition tables the number of calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fat.

So if carbs and protein can't be eaten together, then I'd say our creator really screwed up.

Health and Jesus in the Emergency Department

We got some handouts that we're setting out right now.

It's an honor to be here at the AMEN Conference.

It's something that I really am excited about.

I'm excited about being a part of this group.

Let me open up with just a little bit of prayer first.

Heavenly Father, thank you for this opportunity for us to meet together for this weekend.

I pray that we can all get some information that will help us to take care of our patients better and help us to lead them to you.

I'm an emergency physician from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

I work in the busiest emergency department in the state.

Up until a year ago, we were the city hospital and now about a year ago, we were leased out to the University of Colorado Health System.

We're not a teaching facility at this point.

We do have some medical students that rotate through, and our surgical department has residents rotating through.

But we see over 100, 000 people in our ED every year.

We're going to approach probably 110, 000 this year.

We're a level 2 trauma center, actually trying to get level 1 status.

We're a chest pain center, stroke center, all this stuff.

We have about 130 hours of physician coverage a day with 30 hours of mid-level providers.

I'm strictly a clinician, and I only work nights.

I'm not an academic person, but periodically I do have to read the literature, I guess, to stay up.

So anyways, the title of the talk, basically, Heart Attacks, Trauma, Alcohol, Mental Illness, Health, and Jesus in the Emergency Department.

And I think Jesus really went to the people.

And he would be very comfortable around my emergency department with all the people that are sick and all the mental illness and the drunks and the murderers.

Mark 2 7, when Jesus heard it he saith unto them, they that are whole have no need for the physician but they that are sick.

I come not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

And my emergency department is full of them.

I have no financial disclosures, although I was actually going to do the, be Rip Esselstyn's on-site physician at their Engine 2 thing that Dr.

Carney was talking about up in Colorado because she does not have a Colorado license.

And they were going to come up to Colorado and do their Whole Foods thing up at Estes Park.

They got a little nervous about the altitude, 8, 500 feet.

Well, I mean, somebody may get a little bit of mountain sickness, but I don't expect much in the way of high altitude pulmonary edema or cerebral edema.

But they asked me to put up some protocols.

So I put up protocols for the worst case scenario.

They actually turned out, after I sent them the protocols, they went to Sedona, Arizona.

And it's a good thing because if they would have come there, I think the fact that what they're doing, I think God is blessing them.

If they would have come to Estes Park, they would have had to evacuate halfway through because of the floods.

So anyway, so I do, along with my wife, June, we do facilitate the CHIP program, which most of you are probably familiar with, complete health improvement program.

We've been doing that for about 8 years now.

But the real leader of the program is this man, Harold Burden.

So the thing about CHIP and health and preventative medicine in general is, you know, you want to help people.

And we get more people from the community than we do church members.

If any of you are familiar with doing programs like this, that's what happened.

And the next slide is a slide of 1 of the guys from our church who went through our first program.

You know, he looked at pictures of me when I was almost 200 pounds and had a little bit more hair but I was still gray.

You know, he goes, that's me, I don't want to be that.

And I did have a bypass about 11 years ago, so I'll talk more about that tomorrow.

But he took the program and sure enough, there he is about 6 months ago in our hospital after his heart attack because he fell off the program.

Yeah, he's trying to get back on it again.

This is Garden of the Gods with Pikes Peak in the background.

If you like doing a stair climber, this is the incline.

It's about .9 tenths of a mile, just under a mile.

And if you're an elite Olympic athlete, you can do it in about 18 minutes, That mile in 18 minutes.

No, this is in Manitou Springs, right outside of Colorado Springs.

And we get a lot of people in the emergency department from there having heart attacks.

You have a heart attack midway or halfway up, it's an hour before you can get to the hospital.

There's the summit, my wife and daughter.

We like to do things as a family, especially hiking.

This is up outside of Vail, kind of up in the mountains.

And we went and took a hike up and he says, I'll beat you down, Pop.

But I could look out our window, we can see bears, we see foxes, we see deer, we see smoke sometimes and fire sometimes.

So yeah, we had to be evacuated for about an hour, for about a week from the fire last year, about 2 miles from where we live, over 300 homes got burnt down.

I'm going to go ahead and talk about ways to identify or address spiritual care in a busy emergency department practice, very different than private practice or even in-hospital practice.

I'll look at some clinical opportunities in the emergency department for introducing an intensive lifestyle change, And then we'll look at some burnout and some ways to improve us.

Now, how many of you are emergency physicians or work in the emergency department?

OK, good, because nurses can play such a big role.

The Use of Modern Media to Advance Medical Evangelism in the Physician/Dentist Office

I just want to welcome you to this seminar and appreciate your interest and hopefully you'll find it to be something practical that you can apply to this.

I actually, just to give you a little overview, what I'm hoping we have an hour is what I was told.

So I'm gonna try to obviously stay within that time.

And as part, I'd give you some time for question and answer and some interaction.

But I also would like to leave a little time at the end for 2 other participants that are doing similar things in a different type of setting.

And that's Manuel Alva, who's right up here, and Rick Beckemeyer.

Rick is back there, he's a dentist, so I thought it'd be good.

Okay, good, that's kind of backward, isn't it?

I'm just saying, so anyway, welcome aboard.

This is gonna be a presentation I think you'll find practical.

So I'll hopefully leave 15 minutes for these 2 other professionals, who I think will get an overview of a specialty office, gastroenterology, manual, and then, of course, Rick is doing work as a dentist.

And in addition to that, I'm going to include some of my staff members here, and they're going to have some brief time.

So There's going to be a little logistical challenge.

I'm going to have to hand this microphone over to them.

I'll introduce them for my staff as we get closer to that time.

But basically, we want to talk about the use of modern media in a physician-dentist's office.

And of course, in my case, I'll be directing more specific to a primary care setting.

Hopefully, our 2 participants at the end, you'll get an idea from the other setting.

So I'll give you an overview of where we are.

Blue Grass Clinic is in Stanford, Kentucky.

And that came right off our website, bluegrassclinic.com.

And we have another site in Liberty, Kentucky, which is about 25 miles away.

They are both what you call qualified under Medicare and Medicaid to be cost-based reimbursements.

So that's a little unique, too, that we need to be aware of as we go forward.

We also do a whole gamut of health care in terms of office-based as well as hospital.

Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford is a smaller facility.

It's a critical access hospital, 25 beds.

Probably take about 6 or 8 people average in that hospital.

And Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where we tend to have more of our patients in Danville, Kentucky.

Has a lot more specialty, probably close to 200 beds, and has pretty much all day as a secondary care center.

So it's a very busy practice, going all the way from the office to nursing home as well, which I didn't include here, but we also go to 1 nursing home, probably over 50 patients in nursing home as well.

So you can imagine, just giving you an overview.

We have 2 OBGYNs working as part time, essentially 1 day a week equivalent, 2 half days each.

We have Crystal Brown is a GYN practitioner and of course we have several PAs and also a mental health nurse practitioner.

So that probably gives you an overview of our.

Here's some of our staff, not all of them, but we thought we'd get a picture to give you an overview of our staffing.

We probably have about 30, probably about a little over 30 employees, including our provider staff.

So that kind of gives you an overview of the type of practice between both sites.

This is our health education team, I like to call it.

I'll introduce them as you get nearer, you'll recognize who they are.

1 of them is not here, I do want to tell you is this.

She is, everybody here, these 2, and of course Heather is here, who's not in the picture, but she's part of our team.

All Seventh-day Adventist church members.

But basically these 2 here, there's a physician assistant.

Her husband's actually in a, what do you call it, a seminary nearby.

So she's very, very strong Christian-based.

And this young lady is doing an amazing work there, helping us through our smoking cessation program.

She's an ex-smoker, not a believer, but does an amazing work.

And she is in the picture for that reason.

To give you an overview of our practice population, I just checked with this in my billing department today.

That's our active number of patients over the past 12-month period.

Over 5, 000, almost 5, 500 patients, active patients.

Annual encounters, about 28, 000, going on to 29, 000 per year.

Here's an idea of the patient population.

And I'd like to talk briefly of my journey from traditional practice to medical ministry, which is what I like to call it's really a journey, because AMEN started 9 years, This is our ninth conference.

And for me, where I am right now compared to where I was, it's kind of like a major sea change, moving from thinking of the patient as someone you take care of, give good care, and bail for it, and move on, to something much more profound than that, which is looking at every patient as a child of God, as an opportunity to introduce them to the Savior.

So that really gives you an idea of my journey.

So 1 of the things that I did very early when we started our practice is 16 years in operation in that location.

And basically, 1 of the things that a lot of my ministry engagement is called my personal devotional experience.
