Medical Missionary Work and the Loud Cry

That was a beautiful song, Eternal Life, Eternal Joy, He's My Friend.

As I was driving here, or being driven here, this morning, my wife texted me and said that 1 of her best friends just died this week, and I think in this community.

And so I just was texting her before I came up.

Father in heaven, we're thankful for the life that we have today.

And we ask that every moment we have would count for your kingdom.

We ask that decisions would be made this weekend that could be eternal, just as we heard in the song.

And we thank You, we come in Christ's name.

Medical missionary work and the return of the loud cry.

I've been asked to speak this weekend, and it's my privilege to do that, about medical missionary work as it relates to the theme, which I think is unity.

So right at the end we'll talk a little bit about unity and about the theme.

For years, Seventh-day Adventists have said that Jesus is coming soon.

In fact, the word Adventist, as you know, means appearing.

And we have what's called the blessed hope.

We're looking forward to his soon returning.

Ellen White in 1850 said, I saw that the time for Jesus to be in the most holy place was nearly finished, and that The time can last but a very little longer.

She said in 1856, an angel told her that the Adventists who were attending the conference that year, some would be food for worms, some subject of the 7 last plagues, some will be alive and remain on the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus.

1883, she quoted, the time is short, the day is at hand, things which must shortly be done will take place." She continued by saying that many of the 1844 Adventists delayed the Lord's coming because they gave up their faith after the great disappointment, and that unbelief, and worldliness, and unconsecration, and strife among the Lord's professed people have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years." 1883.

We're sitting here in 2013, And if what she was saying was true, we could have been gone since the 1800s.

Then a conference came in 1888, just about the time and just a little bit after my great-grandfather became a Seventh-day Adventist.

And In 1888, there was a message that was not well received.

In fact, it was a bone of contention and remains 1 for many, and that was the 1888 message.

The Lord in his great mercy sent a most precious message to his people through Elder Jones and Wagoner.

If you want to read just 1 volume, Testimonies, Volume 5, is a great volume.

I talked about the message of righteousness by faith.

And for some of you, I met 1 last night that's not a Seventh-day Admonished Christian that's here.

Basically, the 1888 message was that of righteousness by faith, that being that the faith of Jesus is given to us as a gift, and when we see His matchless charms, it changes our lives, and we begin to demonstrate the fruits of the Spirit because of His power and because of our submission to His power.

After that message began to be revealed and to be preached in a more magnified manner, of course there were some that had believed and there have been some in every generation.

That's why Hebrews 11 is the faith chapter.

A time of test is just upon us for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun and the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-bardening Redeemer.

This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." So that preaching of righteousness by faith was beginning to sound and that was indicating that the light of the glory of God, His character would be revealed in his people and cover the entire world.

Jones and Wagoneer then began to preach with Ellen White.

There was a big debate in the Adventist church.

Some thought that by preaching this message, the pillars of Adventism would be shaken.

And Yet there was Ellen White, there was Jones, there was Wagener, there were some others, but didn't seem to be catching on.

John Harvey Kellogg was probably the most prominent physician in the, maybe even the world at that time.

This is a picture of him when he's relatively young.

But he was at that general conference in 1893, and he made a series of talks which had been lost sight of until just recently, within the last several years, someone found a copy of them.

And his talks were not recorded on Audioverse or Hope or 3ABN.

In fact, if you would like me to send you a copy of the talks, I can put them up on my website.

And these talks, he sent out at his own expense.

And At that 1893 General Conference, there were interesting dynamics because there were presentations being made by Alonzo Trevor Jones, A.T.

Jones, and then there were presentations being made by John Harvey Kellogg.

They were kind of going back and forth, not perhaps directly commenting on 1 another, but Elder Jones was talking about the loud cry.

He would mention it some 48 times in his talks at that general conference.

And then Kellogg had his 6 talks, and he began to say some things that got the attention of the people like this.

How can we expect to see the loud cry drawing people to the truth when our actions are such as to drive them away from the truth.

Now the loud cry will not go until we do this.

It is as plain as anything can be that the great development of this work is not going to take place until our light shines, until we let our light shine by our good works.

Can you see how people might have been talking in the hallways?

1 person is saying the loud cry is about to sound or is actually sounding, backed up by a prophet.

The other is saying, how can we see this happen?

And there was some comments you can read about that.

The other night I was talking to a friend who said that John Harvey Kellogg probably was 1 of these folks that likes to do things and A.T.

Jones was a type of folk who liked to say things and we need both folks.

Some of the texts that John Harvey quoted, I think, indicate that he understood some of what Elder Jones was trying to say.

1 of the texts he quoted was from John 10.

I and my Father are 1, Jesus answered and said, many good works have I shown you from my father.

For which of these works do you stone me?

And the Jews answered him, saying, for a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy.

And because you being a man, make yourself God.

Jesus answered them, if I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me.

Now what I find interesting about that is that there's a direct connection in numerous scriptures between belief and works.

How many think that's kind of interesting?

So basically, you start to look through more scriptures.

Look at this, the works which the Father has given me to finish the very works that I do, bear witness of me that the Father has sent me.

Do you not believe I am in the Father and the Father in me, the works that I speak to you?

I do not speak of my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does the works.

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me, or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves." Kind of interesting, Jesus is indicating that It's not by his strength and power that he's even doing the works.

The Father's doing the works through him, but there's a connection between the belief and the works.

So basically, these texts indicate that true belief works.

Most assuredly, John 14, 12, I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also, and greater works than these he will do because I go to my Father." So in these talks that Kellogg was giving, he was basically calling.

He says, look, if you truly believe this loud cry message, if you truly believe it's going forth, if you truly believe, you see the issue is 1 of unbelief, right?
