1 - Significance of Sabbath Worship

The topic of our study of this hour is the significance of Sabbath worship.

And I'd like you to notice the meaning of 5 words.

In Revelation, the 14th chapter, verses 6 and 7, we read the marvelous message of God to a world just before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And it goes like this, I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come.

And worship him that made heaven and earth, the sea and the fountains of waters.

You'll notice the 1 that we're to worship, Him who made heaven and earth.

It sounds, as we read this, as though we're reading part of the fourth commandment that tells us to keep the Holy Seventh-day because God made the heaven and the earth.

What is the significance of the word worship in its relationship to him who made the heaven and the earth?

This word worship found in Revelation 14 7 is found 59 times in the New Testament, where it is translated from an original word, meaning according to Dr.

So Sabbath worship is a love relationship.

In Exodus, the 31st chapter, we read in the 15th to the 17th verses that the Lord made heaven and earth and He rested on the seventh day.

The word sign can be a mark, an ensign, a banner, or a flag.

But the word sign comes from an original word that is translated twice as miracle.

And many times when the word sign itself is used, it means miracle.

From the same text of Scripture, Exodus 31, 15 to 17, it says, it is a sign between me and Israel.

We find its first use in Genesis chapter 32 verse 28.

Jacob was wrestling with the angel and the day was breaking and the angel said I must go for the day breaking.

And Jacob said, oh, don't, please don't leave me.

I cannot, I will not let you go except you bless me." And the angel said, what is your name?

Ah, Jacob hated to say, my name is Jacob, signifying deceiver, supplanter, the shrewd 1 who knows how to pull sharp deals.

I'm now going to make you into a new man, the idea, and your new name is Israel, Prevailer, Overcomer.

So now we have 3 words, worship, sign, Israel.

Sign, a miracle, so a miracle love relationship.

Israel, putting Israel together with worship and sign we have this.

God's miracle of relationship changes an individual from his first birth to his second birth and makes him a new creature in Christ Jesus.

In Colossians, the first chapter, verses 14 and 15, it says, we have redemption through Christ's blood, even the forgiveness of sin.

And then 2 verses beyond says why we have redemption, on what basis we have redemption.

It says for or because by him were all things created in heaven and earth.

In other words, the basis of our new birth, The basis of our redemption, it says, is the creative power of our Redeemer.

Israel, a miracle love relationship that changes a person from the old nature to the new nature.

Redemption means placing it as the fourth of the 4 words.

A love, a miracle love relationship that changes an individual from the old nature to the new relationship, this is the redemption that we have because he alone can create in us new creatures.

Because of this, the fifth word displayed.

Before presenting to you this fifth word, let me sort of summarize these 4 words in the text of Scripture, Song of Solomon, chapter 2, verse 4.

This is what it says, He brought me into his banqueting house, that's He, that's our Creator, And His banner over me was love.

The Sabbath banner represents this love relationship, this miraculous love relationship that changes us from what we were to what we shall be.

This is the redemptive creative power of God.

Now we are enjoying this banqueting house relationship with the Lord.

As the Holy Sabbath closes, we go forth to display this miracle relationship, and this is found in the 60th Psalm and the fourth verse.

Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth.

Now here's this Sabbath sign, the Sabbath banner, this love relationship, this miraculous love relationship that changes a person from what he is, that he deplores in himself perhaps, and brings to him this redemptive new birth.

And as he goes forth from this wonderful relationship with his Lord, he displays this banner.

The word displayed comes from an original word, which may surprise you as it did me when I first found it.

Friends, is not this the creative power of God that changes a person from his selfish ways, from wanting to shove his weight around, to the place where Jesus dwells in him and self fades away into the background.

What a wonderful Savior is Jesus, my Lord.

No wonder that the psalmist said, come let us worship, let us bow down before the Lord our Maker.

For it is he that hath made us, not we ourselves.

It is his Holy Spirit that changes us from carnality to a spiritual individual.

It is a definite working of the Holy Spirit, a wonderful Creator, working in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

May I share with you an example of how this takes place.

We were conducting a series of meetings in a certain place several years ago, and we were endeavoring to really give a picture of Jesus Christ as our nail prayer indicates at the beginning of each of our services.

And as we tried to present a little bit of the love of Jesus Christ, we realized that it was impossible to really picture it as it is.

Said John, behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." He said, behold what manner of love, I can't describe it, for it's indescribable.

Behold His love that He's bestowed upon us.

It buys description, It challenges description.

And as we're presenting this beautiful Sabbath love, this love relationship, That is based on the miracle of his creating in us this new birth This new experience there was a lady that Asked for an interview She came into the pastor study where we were And she took an hour explaining the awful situation in her home.

We'll call her name Beth, and we'll call her husband's name Dirk.

Beth spent an hour telling about how Dirk had fallen in love with another woman.

He had left Beth, he'd left the children destitute, He'd gone off to New York City, 1, 500 miles away, to live with this wicked woman.

And Beth had some little children, and so she felt she couldn't work out.

She would have to be a mother to the home.

And so she became the charge of the state.

After a few weeks passed, an officer of the state came to see her.

He said, Beth, We think we know where Dirk is.

And if you'll initial this document, it will authorize us to go locate him, extradite him.

We shall bring him back to his home state.

And if necessary, we shall jail him until he learns his lesson to be a providing father and a respectable husband." So she said, I initialed the document, They found Dirk in New York City, they extradited him, they returned him to his home state and tried him, and he was jailed for 3 months.

2 - Our Generous Lord

So, Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O Thou of God and man the Son, Thee will I honor, thee will I cherish.

Dear Lord, Make me a nail upon the wall, fasten securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so small, hang a bright picture of thy face, And I thank you in Jesus' name, Amen.

The topic of this hour's study is The Generous Lord of the Lord's Day.

And I would like you to notice 5 expressions.

Our opening text of Scripture is John 17, verse 3, Jesus speaking, and this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Life eternal, then, consists not of knowing a lot of good things, not even knowing many biblical things.

The Bible tells us many things to do, but the doing in themselves does not constitute salvation.

For instance, the Bible tells us that we should tithe, and it says that If a man does not tithe, he robs the Lord.

The Bible also tells us that the ministers of the Lord should tell people the difference between clean things and unclean.

That's found in the 44th chapter of Ezekiel.

But though I should eat no unclean thing, that isn't salvation.

That is Christ's formula, and I believe it, don't you?

Not even knowing which days the Sabbath constitutes salvation.

There was a group of religious people 1, 900 years ago.

They knew which day was the true Sabbath, but they didn't know the Lord.

And so they raised their voices against Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Lord's day, that he should be crucified.

Eternal life consists of knowing the Lord.

Someone said, well, if eternal life does not consist of knowing which day is the Sabbath, then why are you giving this series on the Sabbath?

It is because the Lord says that a proper understanding of his Holy Sabbath leads us to a knowledge of him.

In Ezekiel the 20th chapter and the 20th verse we read, and I gave them my Sabbath that they might know that I am the Lord, your God.

To know the Lord in his Sabbath is God's plan.

To know which days the Sabbath is not his plan, except as we go into the depths of it, the significance of it, the understanding of it, and we reach right out and find the Lord.

That's why we call the Sabbath doctrine a telescope, as are all the doctrines of the Bible.

Paul said in the ninth chapter of Romans, I speak the truth, I say the truth in Christ.

Now to understand Jesus in all the doctrines means that the doctrines of the Bible are a telescope through which we see Jesus.

This is in a special way true of his Holy Sabbath day.

He said, I gave them my Sabbath that they might know that I am the Lord, that I am the Lord your God.

You might be surprised, friends, to know that in my study during the last 25 years, I have found between 40 and 50 pictures of Jesus Christ as I've looked through this Sabbath telescope.

That was the purpose of the telescope, to show us the Lord.

What does he mean to me individually and personally?

Now as I behold him in his doctrine, this is what the Bible says will happen.

In 2nd Corinthians chapter 3 verse 18 it says, by beholding, we're changed in the same image.

As we look at the Lord in the Holy Sabbath, we're changed in the image of the Lord.

If we're merely talking about things and theories and doctrines, instead of talking about the Lord, there's no power to change us.

By beholding him we're changed in the same image.

No wonder the Apostle John says in this first epistle, the third chapter, verses 1 to 3, when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

To be like him means that we're beholding him, we're emulating him, we're following him, we're looking at his image, We're asking the Lord by the Holy Spirit to make us like him.

That is the purpose of the Bible doctrine.

This is the purpose of the Sabbath truth.

So the Sabbath becomes a telescope through which we see various characteristics of our lovely Lord.

Of the 40 or 50 pictures of the Lord Jesus that are connected with the Sabbath in the Bible, We want to only mention 3 in this study.

In Genesis chapter 1 verse 1, it says, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now remember that our topic has to do with him being our generous lover.

My friends, if we could step into the Garden of Eden before sins, blight, had ever rested upon this earth, we would see a love displayed as he prepared the home for our first parents by creation.

Someone said, but where does a Sabbath come in?

Just verses after it says, that is why he gave his Holy Sabbath, Genesis 2, 1 to 3, because he is Creator.

The next picture of our Lord is that of the maker of man, Genesis 126.

So he is Creator, he created the beautiful home for man, then he made man to enjoy the beauties of his handiwork.

Genesis 2, 1 to 3, just verses after this, it says the Holy Sabbath is because of what he created, what he created for man, and it is for man whom he made.

So we have the Sabbath as a sign of knowing him.

We have the Sabbath as a telescope through which we observe his lovely character.

He is the 1 who provided for all of man's needs before he made man.

Then next, we have him making man in his own image.

All of these, the Sabbath being the sign of Genesis 2, 1 to 3.

And then we have him as our generous lover.

In Ezekiel chapter 20, verse 20, we have a wonderful series of statements.

He said, I gave them my Sabbath that they might know that I am the Lord your God.

Y-O-U-R is a possessive pronoun as you know.

The Sabbath is saying to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, I belong to you.

I'm not merely your God with emphasis on the word God.

Not merely do you belong to me as my creatures.

I am the minister to you as well as your God." And there we find the beautiful plan of salvation.

Jesus Christ was a Lamb slain from the foundation of the world and as the Lord revealed to Adam and Eve this wonderful gift of Jesus Christ, they could see that He, God Himself, belonged to them for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.

Jesus Christ is a gift to the human race.

Years ago when I was a little boy I didn't like dogs.

Of us 5 preacher ministers, all of us preached against dogs.

I did too, until 1 day I met a Pomeranian.

A man had lost his wife and he was looking for a home for this Pomeranian dog and he offered this dog to us as a gift.

I fell in love with that little Pomeranian dog and ever since I've loved dogs.

3 - Our Gracious Harmonizer

♪♪♪ ♪♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ Oh come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

Dear Lord, make me a nail upon the wall, fasten securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so small, hang a bright picture of thy face, and we thank you in Jesus' name.

The topic of this hour's study is Our Gracious Harmonizer, and we'd like to have you notice 5 words or sets of words.

We'd like you to notice first of all that the Holy Sabbath day, God has said, is the sign of His sanctifying power.

Ezekiel, the 20th chapter and the 12th verse.

He said, I gave them my Sabbath to be a sign between me and them that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

Now, sanctification comes in 2 phases in our study today.

The first is that sanctification which sets a man apart from his sins, and that brings us to the word Jesus.

Matthew 121, Thou shalt call his name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins." So the Sabbath sanctification of Jesus is that power which sets a man apart from the wickedness of the world, from the vices of the world, from the evil of the world.

And the next part of the word sanctification has to do with setting people together in harmony.

This text is found in Hebrews chapter 2 verse 11.

For both he that sanctifyeth and they who are sanctified are all of 1.

So our Lord Jesus not merely is able to set a man apart from the sins of the world, but he's able to set his people together in a sweet, joyful, elegant harmony.

This is the process by which Jesus is able to turn us from the sins of the world and set us apart from the world and to set us together in him.

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.

I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I'll give you an heart of flesh." Jesus separates us from the sins of the world and its wicked vices by giving us a new nature.

He also harmonizes us together because we have a new nature.

Otherwise, our hearts are hard and we can be cruel toward each other.

We can have a bitterness unless he gives us this heart of flesh.

For 2 individuals to harmonize in Jesus, they must certainly observe Bible rules, and these rules are found in the 10 Commandment Law of God, particularly the last 6.

How can I harmonize with an individual who is stealing from me?

Can 2 walk together except they be agreed?

Amos 3.3 How can I harmonize with an individual who breaks the ninth commandment?

Either the eighth or the ninth commandment or the tenth who steals or the seventh who commits adultery?

The sixth he steals, the seventh he commits adultery, the eighth he goes on and on into this separation of harmony.

How can I harmonize with a person who is lying about people?

How can I harmonize with an individual who is coveting that which I possess?

So there are rules in the Word of God of harmony.

1 young lady came to us from 1 of the academies where we're giving a series.

She comes in and without permission uses my dresses, my stockings, my shoes, and then she wonders why I'm cool toward her.

There's the golden rule mentioned in Matthew 7 12.

All things that you would that men do to you, do you even so to them?

Let me put myself in the place of the other individuals.

Would I want them to do to me what I'm doing to them?

It's very important in every aspect of life for us to put ourselves in the place of the other individual, for how can we have harmony if we refuse to let the Lord Jesus in us practice the golden rules?

Now there are ways by which we can help the individual who is not practicing the golden rule.

The first is the example of an individual who attacks the character of another blatantly.

The second is the individual who does not attack the individual personally, but he attacks his policies or his teaching in a very deceptive manner, thereby trying to weaken our influence in him.

The third example is that of an individual who has a new heart, and he does everything in his power to harmonize with individuals who are opposed to him.

The first is that of an individual who attacks another individual personally, blatantly.

There was a member of my church many years ago who came to me accusing an officer of our church.

It is true that he accused him wrongfully.

The man was not guilty, but he professed to have excellent evidence that this man was guilty, and I think in his own heart he actually had come to a place where he believed that the officer in the church was guilty.

You see, we can do wishful thinking unless we have new hearts.

We can hope that a man is guilty unless we have the heart that Jesus has promised us.

So he came to me very sure that this fellow officer in the church was guilty.

He was, He thought he was not merely guilty of doing wrong, but he thought that he was guilty of doing the very thing that he was preaching against, which would make him also a hypocrite.

So right away, I did what the Bible says to do when a man comes that way.

I took the statement of Jesus Christ found in Matthew 18, verses 15 to 18.

But I want to step farther since I was his pastor.

I said, brother, let's find out whether he's done this or not.

This officer's office was right across the alley from my church office, so I said let's stop over to his office and we'll ask him.

And I noticed right away this man didn't want to ask him.

He didn't want to go to him alone, for he wanted to hurt him.

He hoped he was wrong for he did not have the new heart.

I said that is what we shall do immediately.
