Amazing New Kind of Prayer

1 - Amazing New Kind of Prayer

It is not that this kind of prayer is actually new to the Bible or to Jesus Christ, but rather that many, many professing Christians today have lost the science of prayer as it has been presented in the Bible and as it has been taught by our Lord Jesus Christ.

In order for us to learn this beautiful science, we turn to the Bible, and we turn to the 1 who is our example, Jesus Christ.

In Luke the 11th chapter, the first verse beginning, we're told that the disciples of Jesus came and heard him praying.

And it said when he had ceased, they said, Lord teach us to pray.

Everyone within the hearing of my voice and all over the world today is embedded in problems.

There are personal problems, there are home problems, there are problems of society, there are national and international problems.

Every 1 of you, dear friends, has a problem.

Prayer was given us by the Lord as a means of solving every problem of life.

I'd like to have you notice with me today 4 very specific phases of the Lord's Prayer in dealing with the problems that you and I face today.

You may wish to pinpoint your most outstanding problem and then focus on these problems, the solutions, as we cover them in 3 specific phases as we deal with the Lord's Prayer.

Number 1, the Lord's Prayer is based from the first sentence to the last on Bible promises.

The second phase is the Bible promises reveal who the Lord is.

The third phase presents to us new covenant worship.

And the fourth phase presents to us solution-centeredness in claiming Bible promises.

Every sentence of the Lord's Prayer, every clause of the Lord's Prayer is based on 1 or several Bible promises.

The first 2 words of the Lord's Prayer are these, Our Father.

In 2 Samuel 7, verse 14, we read the promise, I will be a father to him.

So the first words of the Lord's Prayer are based on 1 or several Bible promises.

The words, which art in heaven, is also based, they're also based on another Bible promise.

Psalm 11, verse 4 says, His throne is in the heavens.

Then we come to the next part of the Lord's Prayer, Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

The words, Hallowed be thy name, are also based on the promise of Leviticus chapter 19, verse 2.

Then we come to the next, Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come.

In Micah chapter 4, verse 8, and many, many other places in the Bible, we have a promise that God's kingdom will come and it will be given to his children.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

God promises in Proverbs chapter 21, verse 1, and in many other places of Scripture, that his will will be done both in heaven and on earth.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Psalm 136 verse 25 says, I will give bread to the hungry.

So you see, sentence by sentence, clause by clause of the Lord's Prayer is based on 1 or several promises of the Bible.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

Psalm 103 verse 3 is just 1 of many, many scriptures that goes something like this.

The Lord who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases.

And so we could go on all the way through the Lord's Prayer and find, as we said a moment ago, that every sentence and every clause of the Lord's Prayer is promise-based.

The second phase of the Lord's Prayer is, these promises tell us about the 1 to whom we're praying.

Who is this 1 to whom we are begging these favors?

Friends, every promise in the Bible tells us about God, for it is God in action.

For instance, the promise is, I will be a father, you are our father.

The promise we quoted in Psalm 11, 4 tells us that God is in heaven, His throne is in the heavens.

The context found in the 11th Psalm is that there are many wicked people in the world trying to overcome God.

They're trying to cancel out His blessings and His people.

But the whole context of the promise in Psalm 11 is, God is in heaven, He's above all problems of earth.

So every promise of the Lord's Prayer tells who God is.

He is in heaven above all the problems of life.

His will will be done, no matter how men oppose it.

He is the 1 who gives us our daily bread, so He is our provider.

He is the 1 who forgives our sins, so He's our Saviour.

He is the 1 who said, I will not lead you into temptation, but I will deliver you, so He is not leading us into snares.

But when we get ourselves into trouble, He is our Deliverer.

And so as we go through step by step in the Lord's Prayer, as we call it, we have a picture of our wonderful Father in Heaven.

The third phase of the Lord's Prayer is the promises found in the Lord's Prayer are a sample of all the promises of the Bible which shows to us that prayer, true prayer, true worship, should be New Covenant worship.

The Lord tells us in the book of Hebrews that the New Covenant was based on better promises than man's promises.

You'll notice in the Lord's prayers, Jesus gave it to the disciples.

There is no such thing as the 1 who prays the promisee, if you please, promising God what he will do.

The Lord's Prayer tells us what the promissor will do, our Lord.

There's no statement in the entire Lord's Prayer of what the promisee, the prayer, can do.

The Lord's prayer is man's helplessness, man's creatureliness, reaching up and taking hold of the promises of God, taking hold of the very life of God.

The fourth phase of the Lord's Prayer is its solution-centeredness.

The Lord's Prayer presents to us solution-centeredness, both psychologically and promissorially.

By psychologically, we mean the mind captures a picture of solutions from first to last in the Lord's Prayer.

Let us notice, it presents our Lord as a daddy, a father, a father who is eager to solve his children's problems, not a dictator who is looking down his nose to see the mistakes we make.

Though your life has been so corrupted, though it's been unworthy, though you've lived a very mixed-up life and a very filthy life, You can live a better life because I am the source.

That is New Covenant worship, what God has promised to do for us.

And His life is in the promises, so it is what He does for us.

And so we can go all through the Lord's Prayer and we find statement after statement from first to last, every 1 of them being solution-centered.

2 - Our Eager, Delightful Lord

The world today has found a great darkness between itself and the real character of Jesus Christ.

And my friends, we want this, at this hour, to form a new concept and present a new image of Jesus Christ and the Father in heaven.

And the text of Scripture is John 17, verse 3.

This is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

To know God is to know that He is eager to answer our prayers.

Said Jesus in Luke 11 13, if you then being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him.

Matthew has recorded him as saying he will give good gifts unto them.

Just like a father except infinitely deeper is his love, more tender is his compassion.

Some time ago, there was a minister and his wife in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

It was in the dead of winter, and there was a deep, angry blizzard on.

They had a little 18-month-old daughter who had come down with a fever.

Her fever lasted for 4 days, the same length of time as the blizzard.

As the blizzard subsided, her fever let up, and she weakly got out of bed and wobbled over to Mommy.

Her hunger had returned, and she looked up in the face of her mommy and she said, Mommy, apple, A-P-P-L-E, apple.

And mother knew there wasn't an apple in the house.

So mother turned in the direction of Daddy.

And as she turned in the direction of Daddy, the little girl's eyes followed her mother's gaze over to Daddy.

And the thought came to her, maybe Daddy has an apple.

So she wobbled over to Daddy, placing 1 hand on 1 of daddy's knees and the other on the other she looked up into daddy's face and she said daddy apple Daddy knew there wasn't an apple in the house, but friends, he was her father.

He determined that he'd get an apple for that daughter, but the blizzard had left the snow waist deep.

You have to wallow on all fours to get through snow like that.

He went out and braved the snow, wallowing on and on, huffing and puffing, all exhaustedly, until he found 1 apple.

Then he made his way back, going through all of that suffering.

And when he entered the house, he handed his little daughter an apple.

Someone said, why would he go through all of that?

It wasn't for 1 apple, it was for 1 daughter.

Jesus said if you who are evil will bring good gifts and give them to your children, How much more shall you have any father give to those who ask?

Our Father is eager to come to our rescue, friends.

If perhaps you still question, then look to Calvary.

In Romans 8 32 it says, He that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all.

How shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

The God that gave his son to die such an ignominious death on Calvary is interested in you and me, dear friends.

In fact, we read in 2 Chronicles 16, verse 9, the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth To show himself strong in behalf of him who is perfect or who is looking sincerely to him for a favor.

I think I hear someone saying, But Brother Kuhn, if God is so eager to come to my rescue to answer my prayers, how is it that some of the prayers I have offered have never been answered?

Perhaps the best answer would be to tell you about an experience we had.

We have a daughter, her name is Juanita, we call her Nita for short.

1 day, when she was just a little tike, I went in the front room and our daughter was in process of placing in her mouth a Gillette safety razor blade.

She'll never close her mouth on that razor blade if you smile broadly.

And so I smiled at my daughter and I opened my mouth and I said, Neeta, Neeta.

And I saw that razor blade teetering right on her tongue as she smiled and looked at her daddy.

Very slowly I walked toward her saying, Neeta, Neeta.

And I placed my thumb and finger in her mouth, oh so slowly, and slipped that razor blade right out of her mouth.

And when I got it out, I said, Juanita, it'll cut you all up.

Friends, why did I deprive my daughter of a razor blade?

I knew the razor blade would only cut her to pieces.

I knew her basic need, her basic request was for food.

Our Father in Heaven is very eager to come to our rescue, but many times in our humanness, we ask for razor blade requests, answers, And God is too wise and too loving to give us razor blade soup, or razor blade sandwiches, or razor blade answers to prayer.

The second thing I'd like to present to you regarding our Lord is, He's truthful.

In this series of studies, we're dealing with His promises.

His Word contains at least 3, 573 promises, or clusters of promises.

Now, when we think of claiming the promises of our Lord, there's 1 thing we want to be absolutely certain of.

We want to be certain that God is truthful.

Numbers 23 19 is 1 of the many many statements of Scripture that presents our God is truthful.

It says God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent, that is, change his mind.

Hath he spoken, shall he not make it good?

Jesus said in Matthew 24, 35, heaven and earth shall pass away, My word shall not pass away.

The writer of the book of Hebrews said, by 2 immutable things, by which it was impossible for God to lie, we have strong consolation.

I'm thinking of an experience that a lady had as she came to a minister for help.

She said, for years, I've asked the Lord to forgive me, and I cannot find forgiveness.

Right away of course the pastor thought of a text that's familiar to nearly all of us Christians.

The promise is if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

So the pastor opened his Bible to 1 John 1.9.

If you confess your sins, He has promised to forgive you and to cleanse you.

Have you confessed your sins?" She said, I certainly have, pastor, for 40 years, hundreds of times.

Well, he said, then God has promised to forgive you, Hasn't he?

3 - Discovery - ABC’s of Prayer

Dear Lord, you've promised a nail on the wall, so make me a nail upon the wall, fastened securely in its place.

Then from this thing so common and so small, hang a bright picture of thy face.

The topic of this hour's study is our discovery of the science of prayer.

We wish you would notice 5 special Bible facts in this connection.

The first is, our Lord often delights to answer selfish prayers, Luke 11, 13.

The second is, our Lord is especially delighted, however, when we grow in unselfishness in our prayer requests.

The third fact is that the Lord loves to have us learn of Him from His book of nature, Matthew chapter 6, verses 26 and 28, and Psalm 19, 1 to 3.

The third fact, the fourth fact is that the Lord reserves to his own infinite wisdom the how and the when of the answer.

And the fifth fact is he has revealed to us in the Bible and the book of nature, the real science of prayer.

Noticing the first fact a moment, if you will, with me, And this is God's willingness to answer even selfish requests.

I was a Christian for many years, friends, before this ever dawned over me.

In fact, I was preaching for years before the thing ever came to my mind.

Jesus answering requests in which there didn't seem to even be a shred of unselfishness.

Take for instance the leper who said, if you will you can make me clean, and Jesus said, I will be thou clean.

The leper didn't say, Lord, if you cleanse me, I'm going to devote every moment to your service.

You follow through the miracles of Jesus Christ and you'll be astonished at how many people he healed, how many answers he supplied of individuals who never once said, I will devote all of the answers to your service.

But on the other hand, under 0.2, the Psalmist says in Psalm 37, verse 4, delight thyself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

And we read in 1st John, the third chapter, verse 22, he delights to answer because we do those things that are well-pleasing in his sight.

You'll notice, my friends, that the Lord, in answering our prayers, in teaching us of himself, loves to have us take his book of nature and observe it.

He said in Matthew 6, it is recorded, verses 26 and 28, behold the fowls of the air, consider the lilies of the field.

And then he brought out the most beautiful lessons of trust in the Lord.

And in Psalm 19, the psalmist said, the heavens declare the glory of the Lord, the firmament showeth his handiwork, day under day uttereth speech, night under night showeth knowledge.

And yet, you find that the Lord reserves to himself the right to decide the how and the when of our prayers.

And so many, many of us Christians forget this.

We sort of try to put Him into a box so that He must answer our prayers our way.

Remember Isaiah 42, 16 says, Call upon me and I'll answer thee, and I'll bring the blind by a way that they know not.

I will lead them in paths that they've not known.

I'll make darkness light before them, the crooked thing straight.

I'll not forsake you, but I'll bring you blind people in a way that you've never figured it out.

I have my own infinite way of answering your prayers.

And then we can look up into his face and say, we know that we have the petition that we desired of him.

The science of prayer means a knowledge that God has revealed to us that he will answer our prayers.

True in his way, in his time, but he will answer infinitely many times abundantly above all that we ask or think.

And now for our experience of the discovery of prayer.

From the time I was a little boy at the age of 6, I learned that God answers prayer.

My mother was dying of valvular leakage of the heart.

Father reached up onto the shelf and he took down the good old Bible.

He opened the Bible to a promise that says, I will rebuke the devourer.

We knelt around in the family circle, And we asked God to rebuke the devourer.

And my friends, in a matter of moments, mother was completely healed.

He did it because he's God and God is love and he loves to meet us at our own conscious need.

Again and again through my early life we experienced all kinds of answers to prayer And so we were reared in the atmosphere of a belief and a confidence in a God that longs to come to man's rescue in every time of need.

As I was entering the ministry, I came to the conclusion that the many promises in the Bible were placed there for us to claim in every time of need.

I remember that this was before I was an ordained minister.

I was teaching a church day school, and I came across a series of statements in my favorite author's book entitled The Ministry of Healing, page 122.

And I was so thrilled with these statements concerning how eager God is to answer our prayers, how we should look to Him in simple childlike faith, and we should realize that when we claim a promise, it is as though God were bending over us and looking right into our countenance and saying to us, I'm speaking to you, Glen Coon.

I'm not merely talking to people 3000 years ago.

Believe this is my promise to you under like conditions and like need with like faith.

And I remember speaking to my young people.

Whom I was teaching, I said, do you know?

It tells us that nothing has such healing power as God's promises.

It states that the same power Jesus exercised on earth 2, 000 years ago is in his Word, and that we all have the right, the same right, that men and women did in the olden days, and that right is through the merits of Jesus Christ.

It wasn't according to their merits and it is not according to our merits.

It is through His merit that we have the same right, the same privilege, to claim the same promises that He gave to other people in olden days under like need with like faith.

When I entered the ministry, I was so thrilled to think that I could claim these promises of God that as I did claim them, friends, I found a miracle-working God.

And then, sad to say, I neglected the promises.

And as I neglected God's Word in the multitude of ministerial activities, requests on the right hand and requests on the left, And I began to neglect these promises.

I discovered that I was becoming a backslidden preacher.

I cried out to God and I said, Lord, what is happening to my thoughts?

And I went back to his word, I went back to his promises.

I began to claim them again, and miracle after miracle took place.

And so it went for many years in my ministry.

I had the privilege of leading thousands to Jesus Christ, of seeing thousands baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

You wouldn't think a person who would see this matchless love and power of Christ could succumb in the multitude of activities.

The old enemy of our souls was working on my heart just like you'll work on the hearts of every 1 of you.
