Bad Habits

Before I should speak and open up the Word of God in the topic of discussion, let's just bow our heads for a word of prayer, please.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you, Jesus, for another day's journey.

Thank you for this Sabbath day that you have brought us and we pray that we will hear the Word of God and not only that we will be hearers of the Word but also doers of the Word.

We need transformation to take place at the core, and only you can actuate that in our lives.

Let us be willing to let you do it for us.

Today's topic, and we're not going to follow the regular format of our Sabbath school lesson, although the Sabbath school lesson is a wonderful Sabbath school lesson, but David mentioned that he wanted all of the speakers to continue on with the theme.

And so today my discussion will be entitled, Bad Habits.

And you know, I came up with this topic, bad habits, because it was some years ago I went to Oakwood University.

I have friends there, it's the place where I graduated from, and 2 of my friends were going to get married so they wanted me to perform the marriage.

And so my friends gave me a place to stay that was just outside of Huntsville, Alabama.

And so on my way to the campus of Oakwood and then I would go back to my dwelling place and back and forth and also getting prepared to perform the marriage, there was this certain place that stuck out like a sore thumb.

I couldn't help but to see it because it was in big letters and it was in bright lights.

I would pass that way sometime late at night trying to get back to where I was staying and I would see it in bright lights.

And the name of the place was Bad Habits.

Can you imagine someone actually named their store Bad Habits?

And as I looked at this store, I pulled up closer to see if it really was a place with bad habits.

And I noticed that it was on Moores Mill Road, just outside of Huntsville, Alabama, just in case you want to go there and retain some bad habits.

It's located between a biscuit house and a car wash and it's on the main highway, the main strip.

As I said, it's a well-lighted sign to lure people in.

And as I got close to the place, because I really wanted to see what was in there.

Now, I didn't go inside of the place, but I went close enough to see what was in there.

And what they had in there is they sold liquor, they sold tobacco, and other beverages, and a little bit of this and a little bit of that and I said to myself, yeah, that looks like they're selling some bad habits up in that place and there were always cars parked at Bad Habits.

I think that Bad Habits was open 24 hours a day because every time I pass, late or early in the morning, bad habits had cars in the parking lot.

They were actually shopping for bad habits.

Now, the devil will try to form bad habits in our lives, and bad habits can be found just about anywhere.

Satan has it on the main highway, the main highway of life.

So, we don't have to necessarily look at Moores Hill Road on the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama to find bad habits.

You can find bad habits right in your home.

You can find bad habits when you step outside of your door.

You find bad habits when you go to your place of employment.

You find bad habits at, what do you guys have over here, Kroger's, what kind of grocery stores do you have here?

Yeah, Costco's, Oh, we got Costco's in California, some of the same kind of stores.

So you can find bad habits wherever you go.

And some of the bad habits, and I don't have to name them all, but we have some of them that come to my mind, lying, cheating, stealing, gossiping, backbiting, fussing, and the list goes on as we look at bad habits.

Satan tries to lure you and he tries to lure me in.

And before we know it, folks, we're hooked on bad habits.

So today, in order to help me to talk about bad habits, I want to introduce to you some very nice children.

And these very nice children that I want to introduce you to, they are a part of our programming here at the camp meeting and they have their own class that they go to.

And so All of the kids that I spoke with yesterday who helped me out for this sermon, raise your hand.

If you helped me to draw on the posters, raise your hand.

Okay, all of the kids who helped me draw the posters, come up here, come up here on the platform.

Everybody, even if you're not going to be holding a poster, even if you're not holding a poster but you were in the class, come up here.

Even if you weren't holding a poster, if you're not going to hold a poster but you were in the class, come up here on the stage because I want people to see my friends.

Let's see, I have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and then I have 7, 8 wonderful friends and they are going to help me out today.

So, my friends that I have standing up on the podium here, why don't you come and stand in the center.

So I'm going to do a roll call with my little friends who have come up to help me out talking about bad habits.

Because my little friends are going to help me out.

You guys hold it up so that the audience can see.

Marshall, step over here a little bit, Marshall.

All right, my little friends, they have a habit.

And I tell you this, habits are very difficult to break.

And if you ever had a habit, you know that it is hard to shake.

And I think that everybody in this room has a habit of some sort that they really want to shake off.

And we do the best we can to get rid of habit.

And it seems to always want to linger on in our very being.

But as we try so hard to get rid of habit, Ethan and Asher, could you please take the H off the stage, off the platform and take your seat and take the H with you.

And so as we're trying to get rid of habit, what do we have?

My goodness, no matter how we try to get rid of habit, we still have a bit of it left.
