Overcoming Temptation

Once again I don't think I have enough but if someone can help me or a couple people.

Please, do not check, check, check, check, check, and say, hey, I am ready for heaven.

What we've been sharing thus far, just to give you a context, is The concept was primitive godliness.

So, last night, does anyone remember what we spoke about?

And we spoke about God's Word has what kind of power?

Because God's Word has creative power, God cannot lie.

Or if we give the Word time, it will change your life.

Simple, basic, getting back into the word of God.

A commitment to study more the word of God.

This morning we talked about the Holy Spirit, how we can, we must have the Holy Spirit as 1 of the basic fundamentals in our lives if we are to grow spiritually.

We must have the Holy Spirit as 1 of the basic fundamentals in our lives if we are to grow spiritually.

We must have the Holy Spirit not only to grow, but also to do God's work.

And we talked about how to obtain the Holy Spirit.

And just this past hour, the third basic thing we dealt with is prayer.

As Christian we say, well, prayer is milk, we should be talking about meat.

But more and more that I've been traveling, I realized that these are things like the Word of God, spending time, prayer, these are simple things.

But so many of us have not learned to truly pray, to truly study the Word.

And so we must be able to become experts with the power of the Holy Spirit in that.

Number 4, lecture 4, is how to overcome temptation.

Once again, basic, primitive godliness we're talking about.

Yet I believe that this is something we must truly have anchored in our Christian experience if we are to move on to other things.

These are some principles that have helped me in my life.

Number 1, everybody, can you read that together?

2 Corinthians 3.18 says, But we all with open faith, beholding as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image.

The first step to overcoming temptation, the first step to experiencing, which is really righteousness by faith, is beholding.

Some of us think it's greeting our teeth, some of us think it's praying, some of us think...

In Romans 2 verse 4 it says, the goodness of God leads you to what?

And so something happens when you behold Christ, when you behold Christ, of course, Jesus says, I if I be lifted up I will do what?

So if we behold Christ, there is this drawing power, and that drawing power is His goodness.

When we behold Christ, we start seeing His goodness.

And it is that goodness that leads us to repentance and to righteousness by faith.

Whether it's in His Word, whether it's in nature, whether it's in Christ in somebody else, beholding Christ is what leads us to see His goodness, His goodness is what leads us to repentance, and repentance is what opens up the door to living a life of faith.

And so, we with open face, beholding Christ, are changed in the same image.

So Christ being an overcomer, if we behold Him, we too will become changed in the same image, we will also overcome.

1 of my student literature evangelists went to a door, and he talked with her about the health book and the lady seemed pretty excited upon it then a children's book and she liked that 1 too and then he pulled out a book about God and oh that was the worst mistake he could have ever have done and the lady started cussing at him she says get out of my face with that book.

And if God is so good, why was I raped so many times when I was young?

And if God is so good, why did the government take my children away?

And if God is so good, Why is it I can't quit drugs and if God is so good?

Why is it I've had overdose so many times and just get out of here unless you can tell me if God it you know and The man was just blown and and she was not singing a nice calm way as I was saying.

That our virgin ears do not want to hear.

And he looked at her and he was blown back.

It was as if someone was taking a machine gun.

And he says, and finally when she was kind of taking a breath to go at him again, he says, Mom, wait.

He says, Mom, I don't know why you're a rape when you're so...

Many times when you're young, I can't explain why the government took your children.

I don't know why you've overdosed so many times.

I can't explain why you can't quit, but ma'am I know 1 thing, and he was from the United States, he says, ma'am I know that God has brought me from the United States to come here to tell you that He loves you, that He wants you to come home.

And the lady was shocked, and she just started weeping.

And He took her in his arms and he just held her and she wept and wept and eventually she started studying the Bible and she came to Christ.

Maybe that was the first time in her life she actually saw Christ.

As we behold Christ we will start seeing His goodness.

It is His goodness that leads us to repentance.

It is His goodness that gives us a sorrow for sin.

It is His goodness that actually gives us a Desire to overcome catch that point if you lose that point you lose very much Because some of us want to overcome sin, because it makes us feel guilty, wrong motive.

Or it just ruins us, or it makes people around us unhappy.

Whenever I get angry and I scream at my wife, then it makes her unhappy.

And so our sins have negative consequences, and so we want to overcome sin because of our feeling, of how we are feeling, or how other people are feeling.

But the real motive that overcoming sin must be for the glory of God.

It must be about God from the beginning to the end.

And so, if we start to say, hey, I want to overcome for the wrong reason, do you know that that is probably the main reason why we are failing?

But when you behold Christ, you start seeing His goodness.

And it is His goodness that gives you that motivation.

As you are beholding, the Holy Spirit just convicts you.
