A Leader You Can Trust

So it says in Adventist home, page 240, that the sphere of the mother may be humble, but her influence united with the father's is as abiding as eternity.

Next to God, the mother's power for good is the strongest known on earth.

That's what I sent my wife on Mother's Day.

We also read about Jochebed, the mother of Moses.

It says that Jochebed was a woman and a slave.

But through no other woman save Mary of Nazareth, has the world received greater blessing.

Knowing that her child Moses must soon pass beyond her care to the guardianship of those who knew not God.

She the more earnestly endeavored to link his soul with heaven.

But we also find leadership in terms of committees, right?

Whether you're leading a steering committee to produce an event or whether you're facilitating a forum or a think-tank Organization.

This is also another level of leadership that occurs in life We also think of company division leadership just like in this prestigious Institution there is a department chair someone who is leading a branch of an organization or a business, someone who's overseeing the department of communication or theology.

This is a company division kind of leadership.

Whether it be a sergeant that is leading soldiers, or whether it is officers that is leading battalions, or a man is leading his troops into war.

And this is kind of leading the whole educational system of England, or the prime minister, or even the presidency.

All of these things are different areas where leadership occurs in life.

But it has been said that ordinary leaders lead followers.

And extraordinary leaders lead movements.

With the global challenges that are facing society and our church incremental change Oh Incremental change is inadequate and movements are needed You see when we look at the world today, the reason why ISIS has so much influence and power over the news and media and every single day.

Now your parents, if you said, oh, dad, I'm just going to take a vacation to Iraq, They look at you like you're crazy because of Isis The fact that we are soon to embark upon a journey to Dubai to the Middle East and the UAE is actively bombing Isis are we not at risk Who would let their child go on such a mission project?

Then you have a movement of individuals who they say, I have a friend from Serbia and he told me, he said, 1 of his friends is a supporter of ISIS.

And he told him, he said, listen, there are over 100, 000 men in Serbia that would be willing to answer the call of ISIS, to be mobilized, to fight for them.

You're talking about a movement and a mindset that is now influencing everything in your world and in mine that has nothing to do with us.

It will change the way you see a woman, the way she covers her head with a scarf, or the type of clothing that she wears, or the guy that decides to pray 5 times a day in the stairwell.

And in this kind of sense, because of a movement, it is shaping exactly how you and I see Islam.

It is shaping the mission of what we need to accomplish and the kind of people we need to reach, and I am 100% convinced that what we need is no longer any more institutions.

We need this college to be putting out leaders that we can trust.

We need this college to be producing young people at every level, in every echelon, and in every area of society with a certain mindset that makes ISIS afraid.

If there's anyone who should be feared it should be a seven-day Adventist young person if you go to the country of Haiti They are the ones that are feared not the people practicing voodoo The people who are practicing voodoo already know their spells and all those things don't work.

Why because you're seven-day Adventist But unfortunately we are the ones who are afraid so that leaves us with the question if incremental change is insufficient because of the issues facing us as a As a planet as a people and as a church the question then becomes what is a movement?

What is it that you're actually trying to espouse and submit to us?

A movement is something bigger than 1 person or 1 organization.

It can't be a movement if it's just tied to Newbold.

It can't be a movement if it's just black people, or if it's just white people, or if it's just Hispanic people.

A movement impacts large amounts of people.

A movement cannot be controlled because it grows too rapidly.

Malcolm Gladwell, he's the 1 that popularized this concept of the tipping point.

He said, the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point where an idea, a product, a message or behavior becomes a movement.

How is it that we came to the place where all of a sudden long dresses became popular?

I was flying on a plane and you know they like to push this duty free stuff.

So this woman's like oh sir just take a quick look We have all kinds of products.

So I crack this thing, and she's flipping through.

And she says, oh, yeah, you're married, right?

Well, you know, there's these new dresses.

This is what she called them, new dresses.

So she flips to the page, and there it is, this long, flowing dress, all the way down to almost the ankles and this is this popular form of dress and I'm thinking to myself wait a minute so this is now the fashion of the world.

Celebrities, famous people are now wearing these dresses and they're nice and light and summer and the fabric and so on and so forth.

And I'm thinking to myself, here you have the fact that there was a time where mini skirts was the movement.

Then you had another time where, oh yeah, big bassinets and all these things, that was the movement.

Then you have other times where, yeah, it was the jeans.

And now unfortunately it's the skinny jeans concept.

I don't know how this became a movement, but it is.

Now guys purposely buy jeans that are too small.

But anyway, that's not my sermon and I don't have a lot of time.

A movement, and I'm quoting from Max Dupre, he's an inductee of the Junior Achievements U.S.

He created a country that has brought in billions of dollars and continues to mentor leaders of other major corporations.

He said a movement is a collective state of mind.

A public and common understanding that the future can be created, not just experienced or endured.

Thus, to exert leadership within a movement, 1 must be willing to surrender control because it grows too fast.

All the sudden when people post YouTube videos they have no idea which 1 will become popular and which 1 won't.

Before you know it, this video, 17 million hits, 45 million views.

You're thinking to yourself, why in the world did this video become popular and the other 1 didn't?

Now people take clips of people saying ignorant things in the news and they make songs out of it.

And it becomes popular and 45 million people watch it and share it with all their friends And it becomes, before you know it, all over the world in different languages.

And I fly to different countries almost every week.

And there's very few countries you can go to and people don't know this song.

They don't know that, oh yeah, I know about this person.

And I'm like, how is it that this spreads so much faster than the gospel?

That should be the question of our minds.

How is it that these things spread faster than the gospel?

And we recognize that there are different types of movements.

We know about secular movements, we've mentioned them.
