Jumping Through Hoops

Before we begin, why don't we bow our heads for a word of prayer.

Our dear Father in heaven, we thank you so much for another day of life you've given to us and for preserving our lives thus far.

We ask Lord that this morning that your Holy Spirit would move upon us and that you would give us the correct experience, Father.

And we thank you for the experiences and the circumstances that you've put us through this week in order that we may be here.

And I pray Lord for your sake that your message would be clear this morning, that you would give understanding to your people and understanding to myself.

And we ask Lord that you forgive us of our sins Father and help us to be more like Your dear Son Jesus.

Today we're looking at Matthew chapter 9.

If you have your Bibles, I invite you to turn to Matthew chapter 9.

It's a story of the paralytic lowered through the roof.

Matthew chapter 9 we're reading from verse 2 through verse 8.

The Bible says this in verse 2, And behold they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed.

And Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee.

And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, this man blasphemeth.

And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

For whether is easier to say thy sins be forgiven thee or to say arise and walk, but that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins, then saith he to the sick of the palsy, arise take up thy bed and go into thine house.

Verse 8 says, but when the multitude saw it, they marveled and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

There's a man with a palsy, their friends bring him to Jesus.

And if you read the account of the desire of ages, it says, this man with a palsy, he's struggling with guilt.

This brother was struggling with the forgiveness of sins.

And so what Jesus does is He says to him, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins be forgiven thee.

And there are some scribes in the house and what ends up happening is these scribes think to themselves, who's this guy Jesus?

And Jesus reading their thoughts, he says, I can forgive sins.

I'll prove to you that I can forgive sins.

He turns to the man with the palsy and he says, Arise, take up thy bed and walk.

And what ends up happening is this guy with the palsy, upon hearing the words of Christ, lo and behold, he arises, he takes up his bed and walks and so what we see here in Matthew chapter 9 in the passage that we just read is a physical example of what forgiveness looks like Does everyone see that because what ends up happening is the common belief of how forgiveness works is that, you know, say Daniel Kalawgos is struggling with sin and so he says, Lord, forgive me.

And the common belief is God sees it and he's like, okay, Daniel, what I'll do is I'll kind of look over your mistake here.

I'll, I'll, I'll kind of wink at it, but just do better next time.

But what we see here in this example is that what happens when, when the forgiveness of sin takes place is that there is not a change in God but a change in the man because just as sure as when Christ said to the sick of the palsy arise take up thy bed and walk that man received new life did he not he received some new legs And it's the same thing when He says, Son, be of good cheer, Thy sins be forgiven Thee.

We must be led to believe then that that man received new life upon those words.

When Christ forgives us, He doesn't just look over the sin.

He takes the iniquity away and He gives us a new life.

That's why forgiveness is what it's called.

It says that Christ gives his life for our sins.

For example, Daniel Kouloglouos, let's say he's a deceitful person, you know, whatever sin you want it to be.

And The Holy Spirit convicts me of sin, and Christ gives me repentance, and I say, Lord, forgive me of this sin.

And what ends up happening is that my sin goes into the heavenly sanctuary, and then Christ said, Okay, in my life, I was never deceitful.

I Was tempted from within and without and at every point I was tempted I never I never lied to my parents I never cheated on a test and all throughout my life when I looked to my father my motivation was you Daniel because 1 day I'm hoping that you'll grab onto this righteousness and so what ends up happening is I say Lord forgive me of deceitfulness and deceitfulness goes to the heavenly sanctuary and Christ takes his righteousness and replaces my iniquity with his honesty.

So now no longer do I have my deceitfulness because it's in the heavenly sanctuary now.

And so not only now, in the past, not only now is all my dishonesty taken away, since I have the honesty of Christ, do I ever have to be a slave to that sin again?

And so in order for me to commit the deceitfulness Christ reluctantly has to take that sin from the heavenly sanctuary and give it back to me in order that I may perform it and so in other words see temptation is not Something that that works like this You know the devil comes up to you, and he says okay, Daniel Why don't you be envious again, or why don't you commit that lust again, or why don't you transgress these commandments?

Temptation is never fundamentally an issue of those things It is fundamentally an issue if you believe or not if you receive the righteousness of Christ Because that's what she says in desire of ages page 324 the way we cooperate with Christ is by believing in Christ merits by believing in his righteousness So, where are we going with this?

We went to Matthew chapter 9, we're looking at the physical example of what forgiveness looks like.

Forgiveness is not just, okay, okay Daniel, we'll look over this 1 sin, you know, just do better next time.

What actually happens in forgiveness is the iniquity is taken away and a new life, Christ's life is given in place of the iniquity.

And so now what we're going to do is we're going to read this quote from Faith and Works.

If you have a piece of paper, I encourage you to write this down.

We're reading paragraph 2 through paragraph 4.

Faith and Works, page 38, paragraph 2 through paragraph 4.

Notice what the prophet of the Lord says here.

She says, Repentance as well as forgiveness is the gift of God through Christ.

It is through the influence of the Holy Spirit that we are convicted of sin and feel our need of pardon.

None but the contrite are forgiven, but it is the grace of God that makes the heart penitent He is acquainted with all our weaknesses and infirmities and he will help us and we're gonna read on but the point I want to make Here is this why don't we turn to John chapter 15?

John chapter 15 And We're looking today this morning at verse 26 because we're gonna find out that the conviction of sin is a merciful act Because it testifies of Christ.

We're going to look at that this morning.

It says, but when the comforters come whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the spirit of truth which proceeded from the Father, he shall testify of who?

So in other words, every work that the Holy Spirit does, whether it's inspiring the prophets, whether it's uttering for us in prayer, whether it is giving us hope, whether it is giving us comfort, everything the Holy Spirit does, what does the Bible say in verse 26?

And so in other words when we when we go to the next chapter chapter 16 verse 7 and 8 what is the Bible say here nevertheless I tell you the truth Christ is speaking it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And the Bible says in verse 8, it says, and when he has come, he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment.

So in other words All the duties that the Holy Spirit had we just saw in John chapter 15 It must testify of Christ And 1 of those duties that the Holy Spirit has is convicting us of sin.

And so you might say, well, how does a conviction of sin testify of Christ?

Because what happens when we're convicted of sin, When I'm convicted of that deceitfulness, it shows me this, it shows me Jesus was never deceitful in His life.

Every moment, every trying moment, as He looked to His Father, He gained the victory.

Because His motivation was Daniel Kolagos.

So that 1 day Daniel would be able to grab onto his righteousness and that's what we see here that's how it testifies of Christ and That's what we see here in Faith and Works, page 38.
