Heavenly Communication

Well this morning I want to talk to you about words Speaking the Bible calls it the tongue We've read a few verses about that before Now is there some pretty strong language on the tongue in the scriptures?

And so we're going to do our study on that this morning, and we're going to see what the scripture says and how should the tongue of the Christian be different then from the tongue of the world.

How many of you think we ought to know that?

How many of you think it's enough to know it?

How many of you think it's more important that we practice it with the grace of God.

I know you want to have spirit-filled tongues.

So we're going to see this morning how that can happen in our lives today.

I'll kneel and I'll ask the Lord's blessing.

Father this morning we rest wholly upon Thee.

We ask Lord that the Spirit of God would touch our lips, would speak to us this morning.

We're so glad to be here Lord in your presence and I pray that wherever our people are, at the pathfinder, at the camping, whatever it may be Lord, that they would also draw nigh unto you and that all of our hearts would be connected through your sweet spirit And now as we look at your word, Lord, may it come alive to us, may it speak to our hearts, and may it be something that rings not just in our ear, but in the depths of our soul.

And Lord, may the word of God this morning transform us.

Lord, this morning we don't need a transaction, which is what the world wants every day, but we need a transformation.

So speak to us, Lord, change us, draw us near.

Let your love whisper in our ear and change our lives, we pray in Jesus' holy name.

I have a friend, and this friend is actually a pastor.

And when he was a bit younger, and a bit less wise, I guess you could say.

He went on a date with a certain young lady.

And my good friend is very protective of his food.

He likes to eat and he likes to savor each specific bite, okay?

So they went out to this restaurant and They ordered a sandwich and fries.

I think that she had ordered something different.

And he was eating his burger and eating his fry, and she was eating her salad or whatever else that she had gotten.

And she reached across the table, and you know how you would do, your wife or your girlfriend, you might take a fry and nibble on the fry, right?

Well she took just 1 fry from his tray and ate that fry and as he was eating he stopped chewing and just paused for a moment, and he looked up at her and he said, I know exactly, I calculate exactly how much I would like to eat, and I order accordingly.

If you would like me to get you some fries, I would be glad to.

Now you would just imagine that that would probably be his last date with that young lady.

But as a matter of fact, they are happily married now.

Because she is a very Christ-centered, loving, forgiving person.

In fact, that gentleman, young man, is 1 of my close friends, and he is actually a pastor in the Michigan Conference.

You wouldn't even believe it, but the Lord works on our hearts.

But you can imagine what that might have done to that poor young lady, right?

If you turn back to our scripture reading this morning, in the book of Proverbs chapter 18, this is a text I want to begin with.

I hope that you have your Bibles this morning.

If you don't have a Bible, there's a Bible in the pew before you, you may use 1 of those, but we're going to look at quite a number of verses this morning and see what the Bible says.

We like to use the Seventh-day Adventist church as a Bible-believing church, amen?

We ought not to go to church without our Bibles.

We ought not to go anywhere, really, without the Word of God hidden in our hearts.

We want to use our Bibles this morning in every Sabbath.

Proverbs 18, Verse 19, it says, A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city.

How many of you have found that true in your life?

It says, A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city.

And contentions are like the bars of a castle.

A man's stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth, and from the produce of his lips it shall be filled." Now look at this.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue.

And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Did you know that you can actually crush and kill someone spiritually or emotionally or mentally with the words that you speak to them.

And Jesus tells us in the Gospels that our words are to be seasoned with salt as Christians, yes or no?

Whether it is our spouse, our children, our parents, our friends, our co-workers, the words that we speak have an impact on people.

I can remember many times from my youth, I can remember, there's lots of things we don't remember, right?

But there are certain instances where people have spoken words to me, either good words or bad words, and those words have stuck with me till this day.

How many of you say that, would find that it's true?

Maybe some of those words were hurtful towards you.

Maybe some of those words were empowering and encouraging towards you.

But the words that we speak give either life or death to the person.

Therefore, before we speak words as Christians, how many of you think that it would be important to use our brains?

And even more so, use our prayers before we speak anything.

We have a number of verses we're going to check out here.

Some of them I might just jump to on the screen because our good brethren up in the AV booth are helping us, But some of them we might just read out of here.

We're just going to go straight through the Bible and see what it says about words today.

Verse 3 says, "...talk no more, so vary what?

Let no arrogance come from your mouth, for the Lord is the God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed." You realize that...

Now, let me just give you a kind of a precursor here.

The first half of my sermon is going to seem pretty like hard.

Not hard because I'm trying to be hard, but because God's pretty direct about this.
