The Faith Of Moses

This is a place that I am not often here, able to be here because of my traveling schedule, but I'm with you in spirit.

I regularly listen to the sermons on AudioVerse and I'm just thankful to be with you here this weekend.

I called up Norman, I think it was yesterday or the day before, and I just asked if I could have a little bit of time.

And I hope that tonight, through a short Bible study, we can perhaps refocus on our priorities as we discuss the subject of the faith of Moses.

Before I launch into that presentation, I do want to share with you some of the work that I do.

As has been mentioned, we are evangelists.

My wife and I are doing evangelism with Amazing Facts.

We just finished our last meeting of last year was in Camden, Tennessee, a small town.

And this story is just to illustrate that you never know.

You never know who will end up deciding to follow the truth we were preparing for a series there and the pastor had hired some local carpenters to renovate the church so they had hired this gentleman who redid the pulpit did a communion table did extensive remodeling to the church they had done it in preparation for the series and the Friday that we were going to start this gentleman was still working at the church on the afternoon.

The pastor came by to see the progress and on a whim, he said to the gentleman, he said, you know, we're actually starting a series here tonight on prophecy.

And we can never tell from appearances, but this man was 1 of those people you know for lack of a better word and I hope I does not offensive he's kind of a redneck you know what a long hair people that you know kind of country person and so anyway but the man the man says you know what he says I'll see I'll tell my wife and I'll see so that evening first evening his wife and he came And his wife came just at the request of her husband.

She didn't really want to come, but she came.

And you know where this story is going, right?

Okay, so they came through 4 weeks of meetings, 4 weeks, at the end of those 4 weeks, they had quit television.

Now, I don't know if you realize, that's a huge thing for some people, you know?

And they had given up television, they had been enjoying the little booklets that we were giving out they said you know we just stopped watching TV and they were they were even giving up smoking we were taking them through a process of quitting smoking and they had asked to become members of that local church you know it just you never know And that's 1 thing that I've learned in evangelism.

All the years that I've been doing this, I've been learning you'll never know until the very end who's going to make it and who's not.

And I want to say that's the way it is with salvation too.

You know, We sometimes judge people from the outside appearance, but only God sees the heart.

Well, tonight I want to share a short Bible study with you.

When we think of end time chapters, chapters in the Bible that discuss the end of time and are relevant for the end times, we often think of Matthew 24, right?

Matthew 24, maybe Revelation 13, but perhaps you've never considered that Hebrews 11 is a chapter with end time significance.

Tonight, if you have your Bibles, I ask you to turn with me in them to Hebrews chapter 10 and I'd like to help you kind of understand the context of Hebrews 11.

So, if you take your Bibles tonight and open with me to Hebrews chapter 10, 1 of the things I appreciate about Advent Hope is that this is a place where people really study the Bible.

I've been here in Sabbath School, I've been here for your presentations, and I've noticed that you can hear the people opening the Bibles, and I appreciate that.

Hebrews chapter 10 tonight, And I'd like us to start in verse 32.

Now, keep in mind that Paul is addressing Jews that accepted Christianity.

And as he does this, he says, call to remembrance the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions.

Now keep in mind that Christianity began in the cradle of Judaism.

As a result of that, many of the first Christians were Jews.

And these Jews, in following Jesus and openly coming out they face tremendous opposition and so he's bringing them bringing this back to the remembrance in verse 33 he says partly whilst you were made a gazing stock Both by reproaches and afflictions and partly while you became companions of them that were so used verse 34 for you had compassion of me and my bonds and Took joyfully now look at the statement took joyfully the spoiling of your goods What does that expression mean the spoiling of their goods people were what?

Okay, basically Confiscating their material possessions, but paul writes that these jews that converted to christianity.

It says here in verse 34, knowing in yourselves that you have where?

In heaven, a better and an enduring substance.

Now tell me, Paul is telling these believers, remember, remember what it was like when you first accepted Jesus, when you first accepted this truth.

People opposed you, you were made a gazing stock, a laughing stock, people openly confiscated your material possessions.

He says, but you were able to bear with that joyfully.

Because he says, you knew that in heaven you had a more enduring substance.

Were they able to see that treasure or that substance which God had prepared could they see that yes or no no they couldn't literally see it how do they know that they had in heaven a more enduring so how did they know that by what by faith all right let's go on verse 35 he says cast not away therefore your confidence Which hath great recompense of reward For you have need of patience that after you have done the will of god You might receive the promise now what promise verse 37 for yet a little while and he that shall come Will come and will not tarry.

What was the promise that they would receive if they had faith?

What was that promise the advent of who of Christ?

And so the Bible says in verse 38, now, the just shall live by what?

But if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

And verse 39 says, but we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them that, what?

By the way, in the original Greek, the word believe there is the exact same word that is translated faith in the previous verses, same word.

So let me see if I can summarize what we've just read from verses 32 through 38.

All we have is Paul gives them 3 reasons why they needed faith.

Number 1, he says, you needed, you had faith To be able to endure That time when people persecuted you when they took away your material possessions the spoiling of your goods you had faith at that time He says don't lose faith because faith will give you access to the reward He says you have respect unto the recompense of the reward.

And he says, don't lose faith because faith is what will save your soul.

Now, after talking about all of these things in the context of the coming of Christ, He now launches into the 11th chapter of Hebrews, Hebrews chapter 11.

Now before we read Hebrews 11, I want you to consider, well let me just do a quick survey.

How many of you have ever seen or read this little blue and white book called Lessons on Faith?

I want to recommend this book really highly.

It's by, it's a compilation of articles written by A.T.

Jones, either in the Signs of the Times or 1 of our early publications.

And it was, in my, in college when I was studying, it was revolutionary for me.

It revolutionized my Christian experience.

And I, I'm not sure, you could probably find it at your local ABC if not I'm sure you could find it online but the the point is that this book helped me understand what faith was for the first time.

Now I know if I ask some of you what is faith, I'm sure that many of you could quote the definition.

Some of you could say faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

But what I'm finding is that many people have an idea of what faith is, but when you ask them to really explain, very few people that I meet really are able to articulate what faith really is.

Tonight, for a brief moment, I want to go over with you how AT Jones explains what faith is so keep your finger in Hebrews 11 I'm gonna come back to verse 24 in just a moment if you would be able to come back with me to Matthew 8 Matthew chapter 8 and starting in verse 5 we have the story of the centurion and this story I'm not going to read the whole thing because I know that you're familiar with these details but in Matthew chapter 8 we've got this story of the centurion if you would be so kind as to come down to verse 8 this is where we kind of get into the meat of this the centurion Jesus says I'll come and heal him the centurion answered and said Lord I'm not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof but speak the word only and my servant shall be healed for I am a man under authority having soldiers under me and I say to this man go and he goeth and to another come and he cometh and to my servant do this and he doeth it.

When Jesus heard it, he marveled and said to them that followed, verily I say unto you, I have not found so great, what everybody?

Okay, now when you read the book Lessons on Faith, 1 of the things that A.T.

Jones tries to really explain is what was it that the centurion said that made Jesus say, I have not found so great faith.

You see the centurion, he says to Jesus, speak the word only and my servant shall be healed when Jesus heard that he realized that this Gentile recognized that Jesus words had creative self-fulfilling power and as he understood that he was willing to let the Word of God do what it could do all by itself.

And when Jesus heard that, that's when he said, I have not found such great faith.

Faith is believing that God's Word can do what it says it can do.

Now if you turn over with me to Romans 4, there's another great very clear definition of faith here and then I'll come to Romans Hebrews 11 Romans chapter 4.

Speaking of Abraham Romans 4 verse 19 it says being not weak in what faith so now we're going to have an explanation of Abraham's faith He considered not his own body now dead when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb.

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith giving glory to God.

Persuaded that what he, that he is referring to God, that what he had promised, he, speaking of God, was able also To what?
